Ratangad Fort -
Very less has been mention about the fort in history, it has a tower like a surveillance tower.Ratangad was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle. The base village for this trek is also Ratanwadi, it has an Amruteshwar temple which is famous for its carvings. The fort is origin for the river Pravara/Amrutvahini. The Bhandardara dam is built on this river.
The main attraction at Ratanwadi is the Amruteshwar temple dating back to the Hemadpant Era - roughly from the eighth century.
The base village Ratanwadi is approached by boat from Bhandardara. By boat, it is a 6 km journey and further it is a 4 km walk till Ratanwadi.
This route which we have taken is from Ratanwadi village which is base village for Ratangad trek also.
Best time to Visit - June to Feb

It's a long weekend. So I planned to trek Ratangad fort and to completely descend Sandhan Valley. Ratangad fort is a 2000-year-old fort, captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in his time. The Ratangad fort and Sandhan Valley are situated in the Sahyadri ranges, near to Bhandardara lake in Ahmednagar district of Maharastra.
Bhandardara is around 60-kilometre away from the Kasara Railway Station. Ratanvadi is the base village for Ratangad fort trek, which is further 15-kilometre away from the Bhandardara.
I started my journey at 5’o clock in the morning on a local train to Kasara. Since it was the first train on the Central line, the train was completely packed, and I couldn’t manage to get a seat till the train reaches Kalyan Station. After 2 hour journey on the train, I reached Kasara railway station at 7 AM. There is a direct bus from Kasara to Bhandardara at 7 o'clock but I got late. I don't have time to wait for the next direct bus. So I decided to go to Ghoti via shared vehicle. There are a lot of shared vehicles headed to Nasik are parked on the right side of the railway station. All these shared vehicles are going to Nasik via Ghoti. I managed to get a seat in a jeep headed to Nasik. They charged me 40 rupees. I reached Ghoti within an hour. Next, I need to find another shared vehicle to Bhandardata. After waiting 15 minutes at Ghoti, I got a jeep to Bhandardara. The charge for a shared jeep to Bhandardara is 50 rupees and I reached there by 10:30 AM.
Reaching Ratanwadi is a little bit of tricky as it is very difficult to find a shared vehicle to there. So I decided to hitchhike and walked to the starting point of the road to Ratanwadi. You can enjoy the beautiful view of Bhandardara lake and Arthur dam from here. After waiting for half an hour, I managed to get a lift on a bike to Samrad village, which is the base village for Sandhan Valley. Ratanwadi is around 8 kilometres before the Samrad. The road is going along the edge of the lake, and you can see the awesome view of the lake from many points.
Ratanvadi is a small village consisting less than 50 houses and a popular Shiva temple called Amruteshwar. The temple is completely carved out of blacks stone and is built in 900AD. After spending some time near the temple I started walking towards my destination. The trail to Ratangad fort starts 300 meters away from the road to the temple. Even I have the GPS coordinates to the fort, I confirmed the path with a villager. Also, I have recorded the GPS coordinates of the trail that I followed and its link is available in the description part.
The trail to Ratangad fort from Ratanwadi is 5.3 kilometres long. It is just a beginner lever trek, and I took around 2 hours and 30 minutes to the reach the top with multiple breaks. The trail starts from an altitude of 730 meters and the maximum altitude of the fort is 1,263 meters. There is a small dam in the trail after 750 meters from the starting point. After the dam, I entered the forest and started hiking towards the fort. Now it's a 2-hour jungle walk and I enjoyed it well.
There is a meeting point of Harichanagad trek and Ratangad fort trek trails at a distance of 3.6 Kilometer from the starting point. The trail on the right side is going to Samrad village. The path on front-left leads to Harichandragad fort, and I need to follow the path on the front-right to reach Ratangad fort.
There are four entrance gates to Ratangad fort. Two of them are on the side in which I am ascending to the fort. The other two are on the other side of the fort. At the end, the trail opens up into huge rock patch. Don’t worry you do not need to do any rock climbing here. There are 3 steel ladders which take you to the top of the rock patch. Be careful while climbing these ladders as some steps are lost and broken. I kept my camera inside the bag and started climbing the ladders. Now, I can see Ratanwadi village, Bhandardara dam, Pravara river and surrounding peaks as a scenic landscape.
After climbing all the ladders, I reached the first gate of the fort. There is a huge cave on my right side. The cave can accommodate around 25 peoples and I am going to stay tonight in this cave. On weekends the villagers put up a shack in this cave, where you can get lime juice, tea, snacks, Maggie. They also arrange lunch and dinner on request. I kept my bag in the cave and start walking towards the edge of the fort. Now, the colossal cliffs are unfolding in front of my eyes, one behind the other. The robustness of Sahyadris can be experienced only from a few forts and Ratangad is one of them.

Ratangad (Maharashtra) is one of my favorite fort for adventure and trekking. Ratangad is a fort in Ratan Wadi, Maharashtra, India, overlooking the locale of Bhandardara. The fort is 2000 years old.[5] Ratangad was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle. There are two main routes to reach the fort. One route starts from village Samrad and the other from village Ratanwadi. A small group of people can make a overnight stay in the cave on the fort.

Ratangad Fort is situated at Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, the height of Ratangad is Approx 4225 ft. Ratangad Fort is also known as the Jewel of Sahyadri
We went there on 3rd Nov 2018 but due to dense forest and fewer neighborhoods we missed the path. After trekking for about three hours we realized our mistake.
Due to the dense forest and sunset, we had to leave this trek.
On this 24th & 25th November we again went there, And this time we successfully conquered it.

The fort has four gates Ganesh, Hanuman, Konkan and Trimbak. The sculptures of Lord Ganesh and Hanuman are seen on the main gate. The main attraction at Ratanwadi is the Amruteshwar Temple, famous for its carvings, dating back to the Hemadpant Era - roughly from the eighth century. The fort is origin for the river Pravara/Amrutvahini. The Bhandardara dam is built on this river.From the top of the fort neighbouring forts like Alang, kulang, Madan gad, Harishchandragad, Patta are seen easily. The view of entire Bhandardara dam gives sheer pleasure. There are many rock cut water cisterns on the fort. Some of them store potable water throughout the year. There is a natural hole in the mountain top probably caused by wind erosion. It is 10 feet high and 60 feet wide. Due to its shape it is called Nedhe (or eye of the needle in Marathi).This fort can be visited in any part of the year however the best season is from October–February when the temperature is cool and the vegetation has not dried up.
There are two main routes to reach the fort. One route starts from village Samrad and the other from village Ratanwadi. The base village Ratanwadi is approached by boat from Bhandardara or by road from Ghoti-Bhandardara road. By boat, it is a 6 km journey and further it is a 4 km walk till Ratanwadi. The trek route from Ratanwadi is the simplest one, The final climb is made easy by the iron ladders constructed by the forest department.The trek route from village Samrad is quite difficult one, it passes over the narrow spur and finally reaches the Trymbak darwaja. The entire fort can be seen by taking a path which moves around the ridge of the fort. A small group of people can make an overnight stay in the cave on the fort.

कसे जाणार रतनगड ट्रेकसाठी /How to go Ratangad ?
गडावर जाण्यासाठी तीन वाटा आहेत. १ रतनवाडीहुन २ कुमशेतहुन शिवकालीन मार्गाने ३ साम्रदहुन
मुंबई - आग्रा हा महामार्ग इगतपुरी कडून नाशिककडे जातो. या महामार्गावर इगतपुरीपासून १० किलोमीटर अंतरावर घोटी गाव आहे. घोटी ओलांडून पुढे गेल्यावर एक लहानशा खिंडीच्यापुढे उजवीकडे संगमनेरकडे गाडी वाट जाते. हीच वाट आपल्याला शेंडी गावात घेऊन जाते. या रस्त्यावर कळसूबाई शिखराच्या पायथ्याचे बारी गाव लागते. बारीच्या पुढे बाकी गावापासून शेंडीला जाता येते. इगतपूरी ते शेंडी साधारण ३५ कि.मी अंतर आहे.
पुणे-नाशिक या राज्यमार्गावर संगमनेर हे तालुक्याचे गाव आहे. संगमनेरमधून अकोले-राजूर-शेंडी असाही गाडीरस्ता आहे. शेंडी पासून रतनगडाकडे जाता येते. भंडारदरा धरणाच्या पाण्याच्या फुगवटय़ाच्या कडेने गाडीरस्ता जातो. या मार्गाने फुगवटय़ाला पुर्ण वळसा मारता येतो. स्वत:चे वाहन असल्यास सोयीचे होऊ शकते. अथवा एस.टी.बसनेही पायथा गाठता येईल. मात्र अशा परिस्थितमध्ये किमान आठ ते दहा तास एवढा वेळ हाताशी असणे आवश्यक आहे.
भंडारदर्याच्या खोर्यात अखेरचे गाव घाटघर आहे. घाटघरला शेंडीपासून एस.टी.ची सोय आहे. घाटघर साधारण शेंडीपासून २६ कि.मी. आहे. त्याच्या अलिकडे ४ कि.मी.वर साम्रद्रचा फाटा आहे. फाटय़ापासून चालत साम्रद गाव गाठावे लागते. साम्रद गावातून रतनगडाकडे जाणारी पायवाट आहे. साम्रद गावामधून वाटाडय़ा(guide) सोबतीला घेणे गरजेचे आहे. साम्रदमधून पाणी भरुन घ्यायला पाहीजे. पाणी व खाण्याचे पदार्थ तसेच वाटाडय़ाला घेवून रतनगडाकडे निघावे लागते.

This was from a recent trek to Ratangad Fort in the Sahyadri mountains very close to Bhandardhara.
It was a night trek but for two reason couldn't film much of the night:
1. Too dark for my camera equipments to capture anything as we started the trek's ascend at 11.30 pm till 4.30 am
2. I was too busy climbing the terrain like someone who doesn't know Guerrilla warfare.
The shots are from the morning after.
My dad completed this trek along with me.
Trust me you can see only the good and easy parts here, because the rest were difficult to shoot and walk together.

Sandhan Valley, also known as Valley of suspense or Valley of Shadow, is one of the greatest canyons in the splendid setting of Sahyadri Western Ghats. The water carved valley is 200 ft deep and about 1.5 km long. Sandhan valley is located on the western side of the beautiful Bhandardara region, near Samrad village. The valley is surrounded with mighty Alang, Madan and Kulang (Known as AMK- rated as the toughest trek in Sahyadri) Ratangad, Ajoba & Kalsubai 5400 ft. highest peak in Maharashtra mountain ranges. The brilliant and deep narrow rock floored ravine is located between the two high walls of mountain range. At some places its width is less than 3 ft and at some places sun rays unable to reach the ground. Which gives it the name: valley of shadows.

Bhandardara is a beautiful yet less known hill station and a holiday resort village on the western coast of India. The village is located in the Ahmednagar district of the state of Maharashtra, about 185 kilometers (115 mi) from Mumbai. Bhandardara sits by the Pravara River, and is a blend of natural beauty, waterfalls, mountains, tranquility, greenery, invigorating air and pristine ambiance. The Bhandardara Lake and the Randha falls are major tourist attractions. Bhandardara is situated at a height of 750 m above sea level. It is home to rich fauna and flora. There is a variety of attractions in Bhandardara for the tourists.
Bhandardara is full of attractions -- from Wilson Dam to Arthur Lake. As legend has it, Shri Agasti Rishi meditated here for a year, surviving only on water and air, pleased with this display of devotion, God came down to Earth and blessed Shri Agasti Rishi with a stream of the Ganges river, which is now known as the Pravara River.
From Bhandardara, you can climb up to see the Ratangad and Harishchandragad fort. Or, you can follow the trails that lead to Ajoba and Ghanchakkar peaks. Also, if you are up for a challenge, the highest peak in Maharashtra, Mount Kalsubai (1646 m), stands tall for you to conquer. The starting point of this challenging trek is Bari Village, located 12 km away from Bhandardara. Atop, there is a small temple and standing. Standing at the summit, you can have panoramic view of Sahyadris and Bhandardara.
Bhandardara is home to Mount Kalsubai, the highest peak (5,400 ft/1,600 m) in Maharashtra. Bhandardara provides plenty of opportunity for small treks and hikes for adventure lovers. The most interesting and exciting trek is the small trek to Ratangad fort; to reach Ratangad fort one should take the boat over the small lake near the village Ratanwadi. Ratanwadi is known for its scenic boat rides. Ratangad is an interesting fortress, situated at the edge of ghats with numerous water cisterns and caves. It also commands an excellent view all around and is said to be the favourite fort of the Maratha king Chatrapati Shivaji. A popular resort is Anandvaan Resort, located 2800 feet above sea level. The resort boasts both hill and lake views, where visitors reside in private cabins ranging in size and location.

# Ratangad fort trek is one of the best trekking spots in Maharashtra. One can see scenic natural beauty, splashing waterfalls, green fields, Pravara river, high mountain ranges and Bhandardara dam while trekking on this fort.
# The view of entire Bhandardara dam( Lake Arthur) gives sheer pleasure.There are many rock cut water cisterns on the fort. Some of them store potable water throughout the year.There is a natural hole in the mountain top probably caused by wind erosion. It is 10 feet high and 60 feet wide.
