More photos of Western Colorado Winters from the 1940's and 50's by Robert Grant.
Daily Sentinel photographer Robert Grant photos of Western Colorado communities including Grand Junction, Palisade, Clifton, and Fruita, from the 1940's and 50's.
Winter on Colorado's Western Slope
Photographs of snowy scenes taken on western Colorado's Grand Mesa, in and around the Colorado National Monument, in the Redlands Mesa neighborhood of Grand Junction, and along the Colorado River in Fruita during January and early February of a number of years. I took the pictures. I shoot western American landscapes for a number of micro-stock agencies, but these are my arty shots. It's fun to share them here. The beautiful music is a public domain non-attribution performance of Beethoven's Fur Elise from the YouTube audio library.
Old Stage Ranch Rental Cabin
Old Stage Ranch cabin is seen in the Pike National Forest splendor, showcasing the Rocky Mountains of the Pikes Peak area. This is mountain living with resident wildlife in a tasteful, clean, comfortable cabin that includes HD TV and Wifi. Video ends with scenes arrived at by hiking or horseback riding through the Stables at the Broadmoor. Return to VRBO listing:

Beware Rough and Scary Old Fall River Road Part 1 of 2 in High Quality
Old Fall River Road Part 1 of 2 Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado USA includes Chasm Falls
The Fall River Road was the first road to cross the Rocky Mountains in northern Colorado. Starting by Larimer and Grant counties in 1913 before the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park, the early construction was carried out by state prison inmates. The convicts made little progress and contractors completed the road in 1920. The unpaved mountain road climbed from Horseshoe Park up the steep Fall River Valley over a series of tight switchbacks to reach Fall River Pass at 11,796'; from there, the road continued down the west side of the mountains to Grand Lake. Despite the popularity of the route, the road proved difficult to traverse and maintain. Automobiles had trouble mastering the steep grade and tight curves and avalanches often buried the road forty feet deep. Following the completion of Trail Ridge Road in 1932 the eastern Half of Fall River Road became a one-way scenic drive from Endovalley up to Fall River Pass; the western half was abandoned or overbuilt by the Trail Ridge Road.
GRADE: The road climbed to Fall River Pass on steep grades sometimes reaching 16%. Some early automobiles had to climb in reverse due to their weak engines and gravity-fed fuel system. Surface materials washed off quickly.
TURN RADIUS: Motorists had to negotiate sixteen switch-backs with radii as tight as 20'. Some vehicles had to turn back and forth repeatedly to make the curves.

A Brief History of Colorado Through Time (Geology of Colorado)
This 25-minute movie illustrates the geologic evolution of Colorado through time, and premiered at the Opening Ceremony of the AAPG Convention in Denver on 31 May 2015. This version has been modified slightly from the version previously shown.
The movie is one portion of a large outreach project in which scientifically accurate animations are created for outreach presentations.
A longer movie is in preparation that is designed for a more general audience. We will post that version as soon as it is finished.

Is Trail Ridge Road open?
Yes is is, finally. Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park opened at Noon on Wednesday June 6, 2019. The snowy views of the rocky mountains are amazing. There is so much snow in the high elevations of Rocky Mountain National Park and all this is just a short drive from your room at the Historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant in Grand Lake, Colorado.
The Alpine Visitor Center and Trail Ridge Store are still under a lot of snow but as the weather warms up, it will all melt quickly. Make a quick trip to visit us and enjoy truly remarkable mountain scenery. The National Park Service is still using heavy machinery to remove snow.
Our little town is the Western gateway to RMNP and is extraordinarily scenic with 3 lakes and mountain views. Buy your Rocky Mountain National Park Pass at the Kawuneechee Visitor Center or at the gate kiosk as you go in.
The Alpine Visitor Center and Trail Ridge Store are still under a lot of snow but as the weather warms up, it will all melt quickly. The Tonahutu River in front of the Rapids Restaurant is flowing high at last....lets see how high it gets. The Rocky Mountain National Park Trails are still all snow covered up there and the wind is chilly! Dress for it.
Lodging in Grand Lake is always in high demand. Check out the Rapids Lodge website...we a room for everybody's taste, the greatest variety of lodging in Grand Lake, Colorado. Guest Rooms, Suites Riverside Condos and some units are pet -friendly too.

Colorado Wildlife - In A Colorado Minute (Week 351)
- - Colorado wildlife is abundant! No surprise - with all the undisturbed nature around. What I did find surprising is the presence of pelicans, seagulls and antelopes - and to see prairie dogs right inside town. This Colorado wildlife video is a compilation of footage I've collected over the last two years in Northern Colorado - somewhere in the vicinity of Fort Collins and Denver.
Animals seen in this video (in order of appearance): bison, antelope, elk (wapiti), mule deer, fox squirrel, chipmunk, black-tailed prairie dog, widow skimmer dragonfly, swallow tail butterfly, cabbage white butterfly, baby monarch butterflies (at least I think that's what they are), cormorant, great blue heron, white pelican.
Some of the same animals (although not necessarily the same footage) have already shown up in other 1-minute videos. If you'd like to see more, check these out:
Prairie Dogs – In A Colorado Minute (Week 203)
Rocky Mountain National Park – In A Colorado Minute (Week 208)
Douglas Reservoir – In A Colorado Minute (Week 286)
St. Vrain State Park – In A Colorado Minute (Week 333)
Arapaho Bend – In A Colorado Minute (Week 338)
There is definitely some classic Colorado wildlife missing. How is it I have yet to get footage of a rabbit? They're everywhere! I've had some footage of bald eagles and ospreys - but in all the shots they were too far away to really impress. Also missing are mountain goats, mountain lions and bears. I haven't filmed any in Colorado yet. And geese? They're everywhere right now. But when you only have 1 minute, who has time for geese? Maybe the Patreon patrons will vote for me to make an extended video of Colorado wildlife. Then I may include some geese...
The music in this video is the instrumental version of the song “I'm Letting Go” by Josh Woodward ( This song is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Thank you again and again, Josh!

Portraits of Colorado - The Making of American Symphony 3 minute trailer HD
Available at Exploration Films goo.gl/LH8hTX
When Emmy-award winning composer Charles Denler was commissioned by the Colorado Symphony to write a modern symphony based on the beauty of the Colorado he immediately had a clear vision for where he wanted to go with the music.
A film-score composer by trade, this score would be inspired by images of towering snow capped mountains, morning sunrises of shimmering pinks and sunsets of peach and dark red...deep blue carpets of summer Columbines stretching across the massive mountain landscape and fall Aspens afire with gold and red...and the sounds of crashing waterfalls, the hoof beats of wild horses running the plains and the magical silence of a gentle snowfall. All this put to music.
To boost his inspiration Charles discovered the work of renowned landscape painter Jerry Malzahn, who specialized in Colorado landscapes. Mr. Malzahn notable work has found its home in The White House, United States Navel Academy… to name a few… and now his work and Charles music would find symbiotic inspiration.
Richly performed by the respected Colorado Symphony and Chorus and conducted by Scott O’Neil, Portraits of Colorado is what Colorado sounds like.

Rocky Mountain Nation Park Snow Removal on Trail Ridge Road
Every year, Rocky Mountain National Park snowplow operators begin plowing Trail Ridge Road in mid April. Crews from the west side of the park and crews from the east side of the park move along the road and eventually meet near the Alpine Visitor Center. This happened yesterday! Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved highway in the United States reaching an elevation of 12,183 feet.
This year, snowplow operators have encountered less snow on the west side of the Continental Divide and average snow pack on the east side. Park plow operators have dealt with days of low to no visibility, wind, drifting snow and icy road conditions
Weather permitting, we are continuing to work toward opening the road on Friday, May 22, but we'll see what the next week brings. Sunshine makes a big difference in helping plow operators tackle the road!
Enjoy the following photos and video taken by park staff on this year's operations to open the road!
