Trolley Tour of St Augustine Florida | ZEPHYR TRAVELS - RV Lifestyle
We visit historic St Augustine Florida and take Old Town Trolley tour of the oldest city in the USA. Our tour included a stop at the Castillo De San Marcos, Flagler Collage and the Old town Jail.
St Augustine Florida. Founded in 1565 by Spanish conquistador Pedro Menendez de Aviles. St Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the contiguous United United States.
During our stay we camped at St Augustine Beach KOA that is located about 2 miles from historic St Augustine. Old Town Trolleys has a bus that will pick you up at the KOA every hour during the day. We paid $79 per night when we stayed (February 2019).
Old Town Trolley offers a 3 day package for $26 that allows you to hop on and off the trolley at any of the 23 stops. The full ride takes about 90 minutes, we would suggest taking the full ride first to get the layout of that city and and form a plan of what you want to see during your visit.
The oldest and largest fort on the continental US. The Castillo was designed by the Spanish engineer Ignacio Daza with construction beginning in 1672, 107 years after the city's founding. The entrance fee is $15 (2/2019) and you can use your National park pass. The Castillo is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Check the National Parks website for hours.
The church has been named as one of the religious wonders of the US and one of the most beautiful Presbyterian Churches in the world. The church was built in 1889 by business tycoon and St Augustine benefactor Henry Flagler and dedicated in honer of his daughter Jennie Louise Benedict, who died following complications from childbirth the same year.
Swillerbees Craft Donuts & Coffee Bar big donuts, funky donuts, and classic donut choices are available depending on what level of sweet you're seeking. Funky donuts are creative combinations that include flavors like Mojito, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Maple Bacon, Lemon Meringue Pie, and more.
We did not go into the Fountain of Youth during our visit of Historic St Augustine but it is one of the stops shown in this video.
The Old Jail is located at Old Town, along with the Old Town Trolley main station, The Oldest Store Museum, The St. Augustine History Museum, and a gift shop. The Old Jail is open all year except on Christmas Day.

St Augustine, Florida USA - Exploring America's Oldest City
Exploring the beautiful city St Augustine in Florida, USA.
St Augustine was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers which makes it the oldest continuously inhabited settlement of continental United States.
St Augustine is easy to get to from Orlando and even though it’s only two hours away the relaxed atmosphere and its rich history is a million miles away from crowds and queues of the theme parks.
During our stay in St Augustine we stayed at the pretty water front Bayfront Marin House Inn which overlooks Matanzas Bay in the historic centre and is within easy walking distance of the city’s historic sites, museums, art galleries and restaurants.
Take the Red Train Trolley to get to know the layout of the historic city centre. You must visit the Castillo de San Marcos, the first masonry fort in the Americas, the Fountain of Youth, Flagler College (formerly Hotel Flagler's Ponce de Leon Hotel) and the St Augustine Lighthouse.
Here is the list of all the exciting places we visited in St Augustine on Florida’s Historic Coast

Matanzas River, Moses Creek
Kayak paddle across the Matanzas River section of the Intracoastal Waterway near Crescent Beach, FL. Started from Genungs Fish Camp
where we rented kayaks and paddled with the tide under the bridge to the north. Across the ICW you can enter Moses Creek and land on a beach where you can walk around under the oaks. I made a poor man's tenaka rod from an old fiberglass pole they had lying around at the fish camp and a section of floating line I I picked up for free at the fly shop. Great for casting into the channels in the marsh grass as the tide runs through. There were red fish in there feeding on bait fish and invertebrates. The birds near the island were roosting on a dead tree there. Very cool wildlife experience and no people at all.
August 5th 2017. Day 1 Matanzas River.
Went on a mini vacation with some great friends right on the Matanzas River. 1st day was a bunch of small reds, but a fun as we landed 20 fish on the boat.
We used dead shrimp only because the bait shop did not have any live ones. Also a variety of gulp shrimp. New Penny was the hot color!

FUN, SUN, SAND AND SEA ST AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA 1960s TRAVELOGUE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH 90184
“Fun, Sun, Sand And Sea,” an episode in Jack Douglas’ weekly America! series, highlights popular places to visit in Florida. The episode opens with Jack Douglas at an amusement park in Florida talking about the attractions in the state. The first stop is St. Augustine (01:26), where viewers see a trolley car moving down a street, a statue of Juan Ponce de Leon, the ruins of the town’s old fort guarding the harbor, and the Fountain of Youth theme park. A man dressed in a colonial Spanish costume (Jimmy Ponce, who claims to descend from the famous Spanish explorer) offers a woman a drink of water. The next stop in the episode is Silver Springs, which has beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters (02:42). Electric glass-bottom boats allow visitors to see beneath the water’s surface. The film shows fish swimming in the water—mainly perch; the boats cruise through jungle where visitors catch glimpses of ducks and turtles. At Tarpon Springs, a man puts on old diving gear to go sponge fishing (04:30). Sponges are washed and rinsed on a ship. Women shop for the natural sponges in the town’s market (05:03). The episode then takes viewers to Chokoloskee Island (06:05). On the small island, Smallwood’s Store is the main attraction—it is an old country store that doubles as the island’s post office. There are many types of antiques and knick-knacks at the store. At Sarasota, viewers get a peek at Horn’s Cars of Yesterday (07:39). A man drives a J-model Duesenberg; the film also shows a 1912 Flanders. The attraction also features a number of music boxes, including the first automatic jukebox (08:48) that was introduced at the World’s Fair in Chicago. The old jukebox moves a metal disc into position and plays a melody. The episode shows footage of an air boat (also known as a fan boat) going through the Everglades (09:55). A man drives a swamp buggy (10:42). The film shows some relics from old campsites of the Seminole Indians. At the Everglades Wonder Gardens (11:38), amplifiers are set up in an alligator pen to amplify their “singing.” Crocodiles fill a nearby enclosure. The episode then takes viewers to Tommy Bartlett’s Deer Farm at Silver Springs (13:10); deer and llamas run into a pen to be fed. Children feed and pet the animals. A duck uses its beak to play a base drum. A goat runs across a suspension bridge that is part of its treehouse. Outside of Miami is the Serpentarium (14:50); here, a man handles a 14-ft king cobra. A girl sits on a Galapagos tortoise, feeding him hibiscus flowers. Nearby is Monkey Jungle (16:00). A chimpanzee plays a drum set; another chimp walks a tightrope while blindfolded. Other monkeys featured at the attraction include a red-faced uakari (also called a bald uakari). At Miami’s Parrot Jungle (17:40) parrots and cockatoos perform for delighted crowds. The episode shows the highlights from the Parrot Jungle’s show that include a parrot playing the shell game and pink flamingos racing around the grounds. The next stop is Caribbean Gardens in Naples (19:50). The episode shows viewers a white peacock displaying its tail feathers and clips from the attraction’s duck “vaudeville” show, where ducks chase each other, fetch rings, and retrieve flowers. One duck plays a toy piano while another dances. An aerial view of Naples shows the private residence of John Slater (22:38), the final stop in the episode. Slater keeps penguins, sea lions, porpoises, and manatees on the property. Slater’s wife has a pet African cheetah. The episode then ends with aerial views of Florida’s beaches and a person parasailing.

Chalupa meets the water in st Augustine, FL.
A nimble, utility longboat, known as a chalupa to the Spanish of the 16th Century, was an essential craft of the early Spanish explorers and settlers. It allowed them to off-load larger ships, crossing the sandbars at the mouths of inlets, to explore shallow creeks, and land soldiers, arms, and equipment ashore. The was especially convenient in the early days of St. Augustine, due to St. Augustine inlet being very shallow with ever-changing sand bars.
The design for this boat comes from a well preserved marine archeological find in Red Bay, Canada [link]. This contemporary era craft was used by Basque whalers, as a pursuit long boat and gives an idea of the speed with which it could be rowed by its crew.
While a smaller, open deck rowing boat, it could be equipped with sails and was seaworthy for long coastal and even open sea travel. Built with 10 oars, a rudder, and two masts, this versatile craft is the first building project of our replica boat yard on waterfront at the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. This first boat is to be finished in time for the 450th Anniversary of St. Augustine in September, 2015.
We’re Christening the Chalupa at 3:00pm March 22 at the Fountain of Youth.
