Welcome Room Intro Video
The Welcome Room at Westlake Middle School in Oakland, CA is a pilot project run by counseling psychology trainees with support from school staff. The purpose of the program is to provide quick turnaround services for students experiencing difficulty in class and who are referred out for disciplinary reasons. Our primary goal is to support the students who are referred out of class with a snack, someone to talk to, hygiene products or just a few moments away from the hubub of middle school, providing them with a mini mental health moment to get them regulated and back into class.
The concept of the Welcome Room was envisioned when John F. Kennedy University psychology trainees providing therapeutic services at the Westlake Middle School site began to notice that there was a spike in referrals by teachers during first period (9-10am). While working with some of these children we began to realize that many of them came from chaotic home environments, and that most of them were hungry when they acted out. We hypothesized that if we could provide the kids with a space to get fed, tell their side of the story and relax, we could get them back into class where they belong instead of having them entrenched in disciplinary actions for the rest of the day.
The links between hunger and irritability have been well established and documented in several scholarly articles .
With the hard work and belief of a core group of student trainees, as well as the continued support of the staff at Westlake, the program has been up and running since January, and serves as many as fifteen children a day. An enthusiastic response from Westlake staff has precipitated the extension of the program to five days a week, with afternoon shifts being added in addition to the morning shift already in place.
The added demand for services means we are running low on the supplies which are the lifeblood of the program, primarily healthy snacks (fruit, nuts, cheese and oatmeal), the hygiene products we provide to kids who may difficulty obtaining them otherwise (roll on, deoderant, soap, shampoo, lotion, as well as feminine hygiene products), and art supplies we use for calming activities (model magic, pastels and color pencils, easel paper). We also hope to decorate the room and make it welcoming to the children we serve with couches, pillows, rugs, sandtrays, easels and calming posters, all in the interest of providing them with a regulating environment so as to get them back into class and learning.
Although it is still early in the programs implementation, we are collecting metrics concerning detention and suspension rates since the program began, and fully expect the rates of disciplinary action to have decreased significantly as a result of our work.
This program is very near and dear to our heart because we have been working at the middle school for almost a year now, and we see the struggles the children go through, both personally and in pursuit of their education. We have all made deep emotional connections with the children we serve, and are extremely invested in their wellbeing and success. We believe that this program is an invaluable tool in furthering the childrens education, and hope it can be implemented in other schools and settings as well.
