The Old Red Mill along the Raritan River in Clinton NJ
The historic Red Mill is known across the country as a photogenic symbol of early America's rural industry. The familiar red building can be found everywhere, including official New Jersey tourism posters, roadmaps and postcards. It is the most photographed spot in New Jersey and one of the top ten most photographed buildings in the U.S.
The picturesque Red Mill Museum Village sits on a tranquil 10-acre site nestled along the banks of the South Branch of the Raritan River in historic Clinton, New Jersey. The ca. 1810 Red Mill was originally built as a woolen mill. Over the next 100 years, the Mill was used at different times to process grains, plaster, talc and graphite. The Mill was also used to produce peach baskets, as well as to generate electricity and pump water for the town.
Visitors can walk through four floors of the Mill and enjoy exhibits of baskets, farm equipment, weaving, woodworking tools and other implements of 19th century life, as well as the special annual changing exhibit in the Tomson Gallery on the second floor.

Clinton, New Jersey scenic bridge
The bridge between two old mills in Clinton is one of New Jersey's most-photographed spots. On the west side is the Red Mill Museum of rustic items, and on the east side, the Hunterdon County Art Museum. The small town of Clinton has shops and restaurants to attract visitors. The Clean Plate restaurant has good food at reasonable prices and most tables offer a view of the dam between the two mills.
Driving from Clinton (New Jersey) to Bangor (Pennsylvania) via NJ-31 N
Clinton is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States, located on the South Branch of the Raritan River. Despite its relatively small population, Clinton is the predominant control city for Interstate 78 heading west from Newark. The town is perhaps best known for its two mills which sit on opposite banks of the South Branch Raritan River. The Red Mill, with its historic village, dates back to 1810 with the development of a mill for wool processing. Across the river sits the Stone Mill, home of the Hunterdon Art Museum for Contemporary Craft and Design, located in a former gristmill that had been reconstructed in 1836 and operated continuously until 1936. In 1952, a group of local residents conceived of a plan to convert the historic building into an art museum, which is still in operation today.
Bangor is a borough located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, 32 miles (51 km) north of Allentown, in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, United States. The borough was settled about 1760 and first incorporated in 1875. The founder and first Chief Burgess of Bangor was Robert M. Jones, an emigrant from Bangor, Wales. He was the prime mover in the establishment of the slate industry in Northampton County. Slate quarries pepper the area, but only a few are still functioning. A life-sized statue of him, dedicated on September 24, 1914, remains in the town center. Indeed, if one visits Bangor, Wales it is clearly visible that the Welsh heritage made its way to Bangor, Pennsylvania, whose stone walls, rectangular gardens, and lovely flowers and greenery mirror those of its Welsh namesake. Around Bangor one can also see piles of slate residue and shale reminiscent of the area around Bethesda, Wales.
The Morris Museum
We sought out the Morris Museum in Morristown, New Jersey, to see its outstanding collection of Victorian-era automata, figurines and musical instruments that run on clockwork. In addition to this world-class collection, the museum surprised us with a significant Native American craftwork exhibit, the geology of NJ, and a handful of rotating galleries.
