The High Mesa Cattle Company-Live At Western State College 1977 in Gunnison Colorado
It is with great pride that I share this never before seen or heard slide presentation. I have spent countless hours putting this together after finding the material boxed away from 1977. What makes this recording special is the fact that the slide presentation is backed by the original tapes transferred from old 8 track recordings of “The High Mesa Cattle Company” Live in concert from May of 1977. The complete set running time for this video is 40:38.
It was Spring Fest at Western State College in Gunnison Colorado and the outdoor concert was planned for the event. The High Mesa Cattle Company was comprised of members from various music groups from the Delta, Olathe and Montrose area. Members of the incredibly popular original “Black Canyon Gang” of Olathe Colorado helped put together The High Mesa Cattle Company which included brothers Russell Austin and Billy Austin on guitars, fiddle, trumpet and harps, Bart (Black Bart) Lyons on guitar, banjo and steel guitar with Gary Cavalier on drums and Bob Moore on bass.
It was a great time to be alive and music in Western Colorado was everywhere. Music festivals such as The Black Canyon Music Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival were in full swing and the colleges and clubs were alive with good times and great music. The Black Canyon Gang was “Riding High” with their incredible album release of the same name. Musicians were trying new groups and sounds among the artists and friends and new groups were formed and popular throughout the valley. Five guys came together and formed the group High Mesa Cattle Company and were finding great success and followers from Durango to Steamboat Springs and were tearing up the road all over Colorado. I am proud to say I was one of them and my time spent with these guys is one of my fondest and proudest memories in my entire life.
And as the sun set that day, The High Mesa Cattle Company performed their last concert together and their last sets that night at The Ramble Inn just outside town there in Gunnison Colorado. After making music together for several years and enjoying great success they on that night all rode off in the sunset, never to perform again together as “The High Mesa Cattle Company” and went their separate ways. This makes the music here so very special to me and I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I enjoyed the making of it.
The locations in the pictures include shots from The Alfred Gray ranch there in Olathe Colorado, The Black Canyon Music Festival, Crystal Meadows Resort at the base of Paonia Dam, my parents backyard while the band (including myself) played for Nicki and I on our Wedding Day! It was a long day as we then moved the entire band and our family and friends to Paul Harrington’s Lake dock by Green Gables Country Club in Lakewood Colorado and played till the wee hours of the morning for our reception.
Other locations include The Barn at Lincoln Park in Grand Junction, Colorado. Also locations from Phil and Tammi Egidi’s home on Redlands Mesa just outside Hotchkiss Colorado, also Maxine’s Saloon there in Olathe Colorado and the very special highlight for “The Black Canyon Gang”, the performance at the world famous “Telluride Bluegrass Festival” on it’s 20th anniversary celebration in Telluride Colorado. Thanks to everyone who made these memories possible and I truly hope you enjoy the long lost concert tapes and memorial pictures of this performance and of the era and especially the music of “The High Mesa Cattle Company”..Live At Western State College in Gunnison Colorado 1977!

MIRACLE ROCK, GLADE PARK, GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO
Miracle Rock Campground is actually only a picnic area and not a dedicated campground. Currently the BLM allows over night stays but that could change at any time. The campground consists of four family campsites with fire pits, tables and thankfully shade. Although the campground is located in the higher elevation among the pinion and juniper trees it can still get very hot during the summer months and pretty cool at night. When we visited the campground we couldn’t ask for much better weather, highs in the upper 60’s and 70’s during the day and definitely thick blanket nights.
There are no fees for camping, nor are there reservations, it’s pretty much a first come first served basis. There is a limit of 14 days to stay at the campground.
The campsite is dedicated primarily for tent camping as there is really no spots for RV’s or camp trailers other than the small parking area.
There is an easy 1/2 mile trail that leads you to the base of Miracle Rock which is a huge rock sitting on top of a small 1 foot pedestal. You can check out my “Hiking” page for a description and pictures of the hike.
The area is full of wildlife, deer and elk frequent the field across the road and at night you can listen to the coyotes howling and barking. There are wild turkeys, bear and I’m pretty sure there are probably mountain lions around as well.
Hiking and horseback riding are allowed all over the area as long as you stay off of private property, mountain biking and off-road vehicles are allowed on existing roads only.
Be sure to travel up the road a couple miles and visit the “Potholes”, it is a beautiful area where the small river has cut through the granite stone and has created various pools. The area is very popular for swimming but it is also very dangerous. I would recommend not doing any swimming in this area.
The road eventually dead ends at private property shortly past the potholes. This whole area is maintained and managed by the BLM and due to its moderate use is monitored fairly regular.

Cobble Creek Golf Course
At 5,800 feet, Montrose has four seasons of mild weather. In fact, no one alive remembers a tornado, a hurricane, an earthquake or a flood. Just wild-flower laden springs, warm summer days of clear mountain air, golden aspen vistas in the fall and snow covered peaks in the winter.
