Walking tour in Kaliningrad, Russia
Walking tour in Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is also called for Königsberg which is the former (German) name of the city.
Starts and ends at Hotel Kaiserhof (luxory hotel with Spa). Walking tour was around 15km. (GPS did not track the whole walk).
This was my 2nd trip to Kaliningrad (Former in 2007).
-----------
Kävelyretki Kaliningradissa. Retki alkaa ja päättyy hotelli Kaiserhofista. Kävely oli yli 15km, Sportstracker ei tallentanut koko matkaa. Osan ajasta satoi aika kovin. Osa kuvista on tämän vuoksi aika tummia.
Kaliningrad - the territory of opportunities
The Kaliningrad region is the most western, flourishing region of the Russian Federation.
Welcome to the Kaliningrad Region - a great place for life and business!
Walking in KALININGRAD / Russia ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Kaliningrad (Russian: Калинингра́д, German: Königsberg), is a the capital city of a Russian exclave at the Baltic sea between Poland and Lithuania.
The history of Kaliningrad dates back centuries where it was the capital of Prussia with the name Königsberg. It was a an important cultural hub in the 18th and 19th century, also the home town of philosopher Immanuel Kant.
Little is left of these times after the destructions that WWII brought. Now thanks to a new eVisa program, tourists from 50+ countries can easily visit Kaliningrad without a normal russian visa. There are direct bus connections from Gdansk, Elblag and even Warsaw.
We start our walk at the Ploshchad' Pobedy (Площадь Победы) at the Victory column. We see the a russian-orthodox cathedral (Кафедральный собор Христа Спасителя) and church there.
We walk down the Prospekt Leninskiy, a major street heading South to the old centre of the city. We pass the old castle ruins and finally see the old Kaliningrad Cathedral. I had to return to a ticket office to get into the cathedral where the Prussian history is seen. I somehow missed the Emanuel Kant tomb which is right behind the cathedral.
At last we walk along the Pregolya river where we end this evening tour on the Jubilee bridge.

euronews Life - Russian Life: Kaliningrad, the Amber City
For this edition of Russian Life, euronews travels to the Kaliningrad exclave. Isolated from the rest of the country, it is the smallest, youngest and greenest of Russia's territories.
Its convenient location and nice weather make the bicycle a popular way to get around the city.
Gennady Mikhailov, Executive Director, Kaliningrad region Cycling Federation:
We're 30 minutes from the sea, the place is environmentally friendly, with clean air, lots of green trees and interesting terrain. And everything in Kalingrad is close by - you can cross the whole city on foot in around an hour and a half.
Not much is left of the original German enclave of Koenigsberg, as this region was known before it was passed to the Soviet Union at the end of the Second World War. Allied air raids ruined the historic centre before the city was taken by the Soviet army.
One of the few surviving buildings is the medieval cathedral. Daily concerts on its recently restored pipe organ bring in visitors from all over Russia and the rest of the world.
Russia, Tourism and Politics - part 2
This video showcases geopolitical situation of Kaliningrad, former Koenigsberg, as an example of importance of politics to tourism development. Visa regulations are specifically discussed.

The Jewish Autonomous Oblast of Russia

More information about the video content bellow:
1. The Jewish Autonomous Oblast is a federal subject of Russia in the Russian Far East. Article 65 of the Constitution of Russia provides that the JAO is Russia's only autonomous oblast. It is one of two official Jewish territories in the world, the other being Israel. As of the 2010 Census, JAO's population was 176,558 people, or 0.1% of the total population of Russia. By 2010, according to data provided by the Russian Census Bureau, there were only 1,628 Jews remaining in the JAO (less than 1% of the population), while ethnic Russians made up 92.7% of the JAO population. Judaism is practiced by only 0.2% of the population of the JAO.
2. This rarely visited province was established by Stalin as an attempt to boost the population of the Soviet Far East as well as to appease Zionist movements within the USSR (which were contradictory to Soviet dogma). The Oblast's Jewish status has led to some odd Soviet-Jewish art, such as the menorah monument in the city center, but did not lead to mass Jewish immigration - Jews constitute only about 2% (although there are some reports that is is up to 16%) of this region's population.
3. Birobidzhan is a town and the administrative center of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Russia, located on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
4. Despite considerable efforts made by the Soviet authorities and foreign aid, the development of the region was very slow. The Soviet leadership hoped that the Jewish population of the Birsko-Bidzhan district would reach 60,000 by 1933 and 150,000 by 1938. However, in 1928-1929, only 2,825 Jews came to the region, of whom 1,725 left Birobidzhan by the end of 1929.In 1928-1934, 19,635 Jews arrived in Birobidzhan and 11,450 left it. The project of the relocation of Jews from abroad failed completely. Only 500 foreigners arrived in the region, including 80 from Argentina and 150 from Lithuania.
5. There is a project to join the EAO to the Khabarovsk Territory . Another proposal is the accession of the EAO to the Amur Region with the formation of the Amur Region. Among the local media and some Jewish public organizations, there are opponents of projects to abolish the EA (for example, Birobidzhaner Stern and EAOmedia and supporters of its further development as an original Jewish administrative entity. The project for the abolition of the EAO continues to be actively discussed.
6. One of the stranger parts of Birobidzhan’s story is that although it was meant as a Jewish statelet, religious Judaism was alien to Soviet atheism and thus frowned upon. The local museum contains Yiddish leaflets warning locals not to celebrate Passover, and Sarashevskaya leafed through back issues of Birobidzhan Shtern from the 1980s, pointing out that although the newspaper was in Yiddish it contained no discussion of either Judaism or Israel.
7. If the local government gets its way, more Jews would move to the region, especially some of those who left in the early 1990s. Rostislav Goldstein, the senator for the region in Russia’s upper house of parliament, said Birobidzhan’s proximity to China could provide advantages for Israeli businesses wanting to crack the Chinese market.
