TSURUMARU Castle (Kagoshima Castle)
HISTORY
In 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated opponent lords including Shimazu at the battle of Sekigahara, Gifu Prefecture.
As a result, Ieyasu established Tokugawa military government in Tokyo.
Shimazu immediately built this castle to prepare for the battle with incoming military of Ieyasu.
However, the invasion was cancelled and Shimazu family was allowed to continue to govern Kagoshima during Edo period.
Instead, Ieyasu reduced territory of Shimazu greatly.

During the Meiji Restoration, Satsuma burned many people. The most famous of them is Saigo Takamori, who is regarded as one of the three major castles of Meiji Restoration. He is a symbol of Kagoshima so that he can see his characters everywhere in Kagoshima. I visited the museum to see what role he played in the modernization period of Japan. When the Meiji Restoration began and new weapons were introduced, the traditional samurai who had knife-cutting became more and more deserted. Then, in order to turn out the dissatisfaction of the samurai, there was a definite argument that the war with the Joseon dynasty should occur. Saigo, who insisted on a definite theory, withdrew from his office and turned to Kagoshima when his argument was not accepted. The samurai finally revolted around Saigo, but they were suppressed and Saigo became self-confident. As a result, the samurai era was completely closed. The Southwest War was Japan's last civil war, and it was the last war between the Japanese. Satsuma soldiers and government soldiers have killed about 12,000 people. After the Southwest War, Japan succeeded in modernization, but this led to the tragedy of our country. I felt bitter.

Kagoshima, a seaside city on Japan's Kyushu Island, is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. It's best known for Sakurajima, an active volcano that faces Kinko Bay.
At its base, the Nagisa Lava Trail winds through lava fields filled with boulders. Once set on an isolated island, the volcano became connected to the Osumi Peninsula after an eruption in 1914.

Shuseikan Museum, Kagoshima, Japan
The Shuseikan Museum is located in Kagoshima. In the museum, Lord Tadayoshi lived for 10 years in this place. Nearby the museum, there is a bay - Kinko Bay and good viewpoint to see Sakurajima too. Samurai used Dutch textbook and combined traditional Japanese craftsmanship with the western knowledge to build a 20 meters working structure, which was used to melt iron and produce cannon.
Kagoshima City Museum of ART, Center of Culture & History of Kagoshima, Japan
Center of Culture of History of KAGOSHIMA
This museum located at ruins of Kagoshima Castle in which Shimazu family governed Kagoshima for centuries.
At the foot of Mountain Shiroyama, this area has prospered as the historical center of politics and culture.
This art museum opened in 1954 and stored historical artifacts.
As only one public art museum, it has collected precious art pieces.
At the same time, this museum has contributed to the advancement of art culture of Kagoshima through activities such as exhibition and other activities of art museum.
In order to catch up with diversifying art activities and expectation of Kagoshima citizens, old museum was demolished and new museum was built and started on 29 November 1985.
New museum mainly stores arts of local artists and western pieces from the end of the 19th century.
My Personal Recommendation at this Museum
It is wonderful to place to walk around while appreciating various kinds of art. I love to take a rest and drink a cup of coffee at the restaurant in this museum. It is confortable!

Birthplace of Mr.Saigo Takamori : Hero of Kagoshima!
I came to the birth place of Mr.Saigo Takamori.
This is just the place where the hero was born and he changed the history of Kagoshima Prefecture and whole Japan!
Saigo Takamori was not born in a high-class aristocracy but in a low-class Samurai family. The feudal lord Shimazu Nariakira of that time discovered Saigo's extraordinary talent and employed him as his key servant. This was the beginning of Saigo's political life.
Nariakira Shimazu is famous as an inventer of Japanese national flag Hinomaru.
His birthplace is only a stone throw from Kagoshima Chuo Station. It takes only 15 minutes by foot. The Kotsuki River flows near the birthplace.

There is a place to make shochu in a traditional way. Takju is fermented in a large jar, but the smell of fragrant and fragrant alcohol is full in the brewery. Kagoshima is the home of sweet potatoes, mixed with sweet potatoes in rice to make shochu. When the cooked Takju is distilled in a wooden pail, alcohol comes out. I like the sweet potato flavor, which is the main ingredient. This is a characteristic of distilleries. The main ingredient appears to be very good. Even though I did not add the sweetener, the taste was soft and soft. It's a bit sweet. That's the characteristic of sweet potato shochu.

I came back to Kagoshima and went to Tenmonkan, a shopping mall in central part of my working time. In a building, people practice traditional dances and dance. It is said that people participate in the festival which is held for two days from this evening. They were high school alumni gathered nationwide to participate in the festival, and there were many who were old. This is 82 years old. How old are you? 80 years old? 84, 84 years old. I came back to dance in Tokyo. This is the oldest, and it's an honor. Ohara Matsuri is held on November 2 and 3 in Kagoshima. May also be held in Shibuya, Tokyo. Participate there. I originally had 4-5 people, but this year I was only participating by myself. I have a lot of motivation, and I will work hard! The age of 84 is very strong and the dance scene is very strong. When evening came, Ohara Festival festival began. Ohara Festival is held for two days on November 2 and 3 every year. I danced to the traditional folk songs of Kagoshima, and it is a spectacle that tens of thousands of people dressed in traditional clothes dancing at the same time. I participated in civic, citizen, citizen, group, company and whole area. I think it is one of the charms of the Ohara Matsuri that many people, both young and old, can participate. The Ohara Festival is well-known as the festival in which residents participate most widely in Japan. Teachers and nursing homes also came out. How and how did you practice with the children? About a month. The children were also very happy, and one of them practiced very much.
