CAR RENTAL SICILY, ITALY - We’re on Another Road Trip!
What’s the best way to see Sicily? Hire a car!
We did a lot of research before going to Italy on how to get around, what is the cheapest mode of transportation and how good the public transport networks are. We found that travelling long distances (for example Rome to Palermo) the cheapest and easiest way is to get a coach. However, the best part about getting out of major cities is seeing the countryside and being able to stop in the little towns along the way. If you want to do this in Sicily then you really do need to hire a car.
Renting a car in Italy is very affordable. We hired a Fiat 500 for €17 a day, and that wasn’t even with a deal. It was a last minute straight from Hertz price, so we’re sure that you can get an even better price than that. Fuel can get quite expensive though, we were paying around €1.60 per litre, so just keep that in mind when you plan your itinerary.
What are the roads like in Italy?….Ah…..they vary. The motorways are excellent (as you should expect), main roads are normally decent (but can also be absolutely terrible), and smaller roads in and around the towns can get pretty rough (or just be completely collapsed, flooded and blocked off without a detour warning). Because of the pot luck situation with roads its a good idea to always have plenty of fuel and be prepared for reaching your destination later than expected.
While in Sicily we have booked several Airbnbs. Similar to Greece this was the cheapest accommodation option. There aren’t hostels outside of Palermo and Catania, hotels are limited and can be quite expensive as well. We found Airbnbs for around $35-$50 AUD per night for a house to ourselves. Staying in an Airbnb is another good way to save money because you can make your own food (providing you have a kitchen). Eating out in Sicily isn’t what we’d call expensive, but it’s generally above our normal budget. So we ate a simple breakfast at home, usually ate lunch out and then cooked at home. We also found a lot of the food available in Italy is not exactly healthy, so having dinner at home was our chance to have some veggies!
Something that took us by surprise and was definitely a spanner in the works - everything shuts down in the afternoon! Between 12pm and 5pm (depending on where you are, some places its 1pm to 4pm) all the shops and restaurants close down. Even some super markets close during this time. The only places we noticed were open are gelato and coffee bars. But a bonus is the roads are almost completely empty during this time and street parking is FREE! So we ended up going to towns during this time, parked for free and wandered around the area by foot in peace and quiet.

Get to see Venice exactly as locals do
Visit Venice during spring break!:
Many people is amazed of how Venice looks in every picture, every social media post, every post-card. But true travelers know that there's more than that. To discover Venice for what It really is, you need a local friend to guide you through the maze-like city that everyone loves . Luckily we have Local jacks, guys that will be your local friends during your trip. They will take you across the narrowest streets, making you discover the true life of true venetian people. They will point out the typical street food spots, explaining the hidden messages across the city and will teach you how to live like one of the locals for sure.

I Rented a Historic Palazzo in Venice Italy ????????
■ ITALY, VENICE: Sometimes it’s ok to splurge. Or at at least that’s what I told myself before I rented a Venetian Palazzo on Airbnb for myself and 8 friends whilst in Italy for the weekend. Given the outrageously expensive price tag it should come as no surprise that it was also incredibly spacious and lavishly furnished. So just how luxurious was this fabulous one of a kind Italian apartment?

Italy River Cruise • The Venetian Lagoon & the Po Valley aboard La Bella Vita | European Waterways
River Cruise in Italy including the Venetian Lagoon & the Po Valley aboard the 20 passenger La Bella Vita
When it comes to river cruises, Italy is a country seemingly designed to host them. Its beautiful canals and rivers pass through diverse landscapes and nature en route, from picturesque lagoon islands with their colourful houses, to wild beach dunes and pine woods with an abundance of birdlife. These waterways were once the ancient trade routes used by the Romans and the early Mediterranean settlers before them, and cruises around Italy are perfect for gaining a real insight into the many cultures - including Roman, Etruscan, Istrian, Byzantine and of course Renaissance - which have influenced the arts, architecture and history of the region over many centuries.
Throughout the season the 20 passenger La Bella Vita provides Italian river cruises that encompass the romance and architecture of Venice as well as the captivating lakeside setting of the Renaissance city of Mantua. Venice is, of course, the crowning jewel of most Italian river cruises, but Mantua, in central northern Italy, has also been (and still is) a hub of art, culture and music for centuries. The route inland takes you along the River Po and the Bianco Canal through the Po Valley.
Delicious seafood, local culinary specialities, fine wines and attentive service complete the experience of this fairytale adventure, and explain the appeal of our boutique Italian river cruises. Luxuriating in a friendly and relaxing boat environment, travellers have an opportunity for a unique perspective on some magnificent Italian cities.
Cruise Highlights
• Tour of historic Venice, The Naval Museum and the Pavilion of Gondolas
• Cruise on the Canal of the Orphans past picturesque lagoon islands
• Tour of Chioggia with its Roman, Etruscan and Byzantine history
• Visit to Chioggia’s colourful fish market
• Dinner ashore at the 17thC stately home Villa Ca’Zen
• Private visit to the wine cellars of Villa Widmann-Borletti
• Tour of the 14thC Estense Castle in Ferrara
• Visit Mantua’s Ducal Palace and gardens or the Doge’s Palace in Venice
La Bella Vita is the perfect vessel aboard which to embark in one of our cruises around Italy and to immerse yourself in Italian Renaissance culture. When it comes to river cruises, Italy is indeed hard to beat!
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!
European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.
The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis. Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide.
The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.

Italy Road Trip: Florence to Bologna (Montepulciano & San Marino)
My Italy Road Trip begins in Florence, Italy where I spend a relaxing day in Firenze before meeting up with friend and fellow travel blogger Clint of TripHackr.com.
We need to be in Venice in four days, so this is part one of the Italian Road Trip adventure to get there!
We rent a car in Florence and drive south to Montepulciano for lunch. Montepulciano is an incredible medieval hilltop town right in the middle of the Tuscany wine region.
Next, we drove back north to the Republic of San Marino for sunset, and onward to Bologna for dinner.
It was a great first day on our Italy Road Trip!

♡Venice Details:
- Took a water taxi to the hotel
- Hotel I stayed at: Hotel Metropole
- Boat clips: La Gondala (Deff recommend doing this if you go. It was the highlight of Venice)
♡1st Santorini Vlog Clips Details:
- Hotels stayed at: Mystique and Astra Suites. Mystique had a better hotel room view and breakfast. Astra had a more spacious room. Would recommend both.
♡Mykonos Details:
- 1st hotel was located in Ornos but we switched right away due to the burglary/stalker situation.
- 2nd hotel which we stayed at pretty much our whole trip: Grace (closer to Miknonos town)
- I typically prefer my privacy on trips so try to go to private beaches or more secluded ones with less people, so all the beaches visited in Mykonos were more secluded ones that you would definitely need to rent a car to get to. One of my friends had rented a car so it made traveling to these beaches a lot easier. I would recommend renting a car for Mykonos if you plan to travel all over the island or go to more secluded beaches like I did. I don’t recommend renting an ATV there; it’s said to be dangerous, and the roads are not safe unless you are a local and very experienced with driving them there.
♡2nd Santorini Vlog Clip Details:
- Villa: Theano Apartments (can book on booking.com or orbitz.com). Deff recommend staying here and renting an ATV (these are safer to drive in Santorini). I think renting an ATV is better than a car for Santorini, because it is very hot; much hotter than Mykonos, so the breeze you get on an ATV makes the ride much more enjoyable and fun. It’s about 10 euro to fill a tank of gas in an ATV (roughly 12 US dollars), and the gas lasts a good amount of time. I was able to travel the whole Island on one tank of gas. The owner of the villa was very accommodating and nice. I had also left my vlog camera in the safe after leaving Santorini, and he is mailing it to me. Very nice, and he offered a lot of valuable information on the closest restaurants which offered delivery and showed us on a map what beaches to go to, etc. He made note of the fact that Oia, Santorini does not have gas stations, so not to drive the ATV (or any vehicle) to that area without having sufficient gas. There are gas stations everywhere else except Oia. We rented ATVs for 3 days, and the total cost per ATV was 96 euro. It is also a good idea to get an International Driving License prior to renting a car or ATV if you are from the states like myself and do not have one. I went to my local Walgreens for passport photos, then took them to triple A & paid 20 US dollars for my International Driving License. To get to the Red Beach, you have to walk along a dangerous rocky area, so just be mindful of that when going there.
- There are a ton of cats all over the Greek Islands, so cute!! But if you are bringing a dog with you, be careful and keep it close. I saw a woman with her little Yorkie dog walking (it was on a leash also), and a cat charged it. I ran to stall/stop the cat, and the dog owner had to grab her dog, so deff be careful of that if you bring your dog.

As many of you know, I hate public transportation. I like experiencing the driving dynamics everywhere I go! So, after spending a few days in Rome, we rented a car and drove up north!
I planned this trip for months! I knew exactly where we were going and how things look thanks to Google Maps. I was also able to save $15 a day on my GPS rental by using Google Maps OFFLINE feature. Even though, the offline feature is not available for walking routes, I was able to use the driving routes to make my way thru alleys and cut thru parks easily. I even used it in Venice! While everyone was getting lost and looking for street signs and juggling thru their massive paper maps, I was navigating the beautiful and unbelievably enchanting alleyways of Venice like a pro.
So with all that in mind, here’s what the trip looked like… We picked up our rental car in Rome’s Fiumicino Aeroporto…
After just a few kilometers on Italian roads, it became apparent that things are smaller and spaces are tighter here, which I would think leads to better drivers. And better drivers they are! I think… People, although drive aggressively in big cities, are very respectful on major highways and bare right! One of my biggest pet peeves here in the US. PLEASE JUST bare right when you drive!
Ok, anyway, Back To The Drive!!!
Orvieto is a small ancient city in the southwestern part of Umbria. Its best kept secret is its labyrinth of caves, tunnels, and wells, dug deep beneath the surface and only available to view thru guided tours. I thought it was a great place for a rest stop, recharge and taste some of the local cuisine! Sitting on top of a mountain, can’t complaint about the view either!
And now we’re off to Monteriggioni!
Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town in the region of Tuscany, one of the few medieval walled towns left in Italy! This is a MUST SEE! And the back roads, oh my god the awesome back roads of Tuscany!!I highly recommend it!
Next, we head over to the town of the infamous Volturi from the Twilight series - Volterra!
Volterra is another enchanting walled town in the northern part of the Tuscany region and I absolutely LOVE IT! The scenary, the atmosphere, the smells, the ROADS… the substantial structures from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods. Ugh, I wanna go back right now!
Next, let's head over to Pisa to the leaning tower...
In Pisa, there’s not much to see… not for me anyways, but who can resist stopping over and snapping some pics at the leaning tower of Pisa?? So here’s a picture of me keeping the leaning tower in place…
Next, after what appears to be endless tunnels, we head over to Florence… Home of the worlds greatest Gelato!!!
Florence was the center of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of that era. And is still feels big to me, dare I say even a tad modern? There’s a lot to see and places to visit, but if I ever go back, I will only go to restaurants and of course Vivoli…. YUM!!!!
Right… Off we go to Venice! On the way there we entered a series of tunnels, the longest I’ve ever seen! I have SEVERAL minutes driving thru these tunnels at highway speeds!
Venice then… there are no driving roads… just water… So here’s the parking lot before we take a boat to the main island..
Venice was great!!! Must come back again! Now we head over to Bologna to pay a visit to my friends at Lamborghini...
Bologna is one of the largest cities in Northern Italy. To me, there’s not much to see other than CARS!!! Home to scuderia Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Pagani, I could definitely see it as MY HOME as well!
And now, I will give you a tour of the Lamborghini museum is UNDER 30 seconds!
