Stargazing at the National Portrait Gallery in DC
Usually when we think about the word portrait we think of an oil painting or photograph with the subject in a formal pose. But a new exhibit at The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC is re-inventing the notion of a “portrait” in a new exhibition. It’s called “Eye Pop: The Celebrity Gaze.”
In addition to showing traditional portraits of pop culture icons it features works of art on a multi-media platform.
Two of the artists, for example, created what you might call “video portraits.”
For this week's Urban Voices segment on “Americas Now” we introduce you to artists Bo Gehring and Luke DuBois.
All of the subjects in the “Eye Pop” exhibit are currently living. And all 54 portraits were created since 2013.
Portraits of Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Marc Anthony and Eva Longoria are all included in the exhibition.
“Eye Pop” was unveiled by National Portrait Gallery Director Kim Sajet last summer. It will run through July 2016.

Smithsonian Castle & U.S. Capitol Building, Washington D.C. (January 2012).
The Smithsonian Castle, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. behind the National Museum of African Art, houses the Smithsonian Institution's administrative offices and information center. The building is constructed of red Seneca sandstone in the faux Norman style (a 12th-century combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs) and is appropriately nicknamed The Castle. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
The Castle was the first Smithsonian building, begun in 1847 by architect James Renwick, Jr., whose other works include St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, also in Washington D.C. Renwick was selected by a unanimous vote following a design competition in 1846.
Anniversary Adventures in DC | VLOG | 12.06.15
December 6, 2015 | Niko and I spent our anniversary exploring DC! We had breakfast at Le Diplomate (which we didn't record because we were so hungry!), checked out the newly opened Renwick Gallery, then ended the day at the Newseum. Lots of walking and our feet hurt at the end of the day, but we had fun!
