Brewery - Goode Island Beer Co

Style - English Bitter

Reviewed on - 21st June 2018.
Commercial Description - Inspired by visits to English country pubs, Honker’s Ale combines a fruity hop aroma with a rich malt middle to create a perfectly balanced beer. Immensely drinkable, Honker’s Ale is not only the beer you can trust but one you’ll look forward to time and again.
Goose Island Beer Co:
Our famous beer began with a trip across Europe, when Goose Island founder (and unabashed beer lover) John Hall took a tour across the continent. Pint by pint, he savored the styles and selections of brews in every region, and thought to himself, “America deserves some damn fine beer like this, too.” Craft brewing wasn’t widely known at the time, but upon return from his European sojourn, John set out to change all that. He settled down in his hometown of Chicago—a city perfect for craft beer, with rapidly evolving tastes and the largest system of fresh water on the planet. And then he got to brewing.
First he made some stellar beer. Then he invited his consumers in to watch his process at the brewery, bringing them behind the scenes every step of the way. The result was a new fascination with craft brewing, and beer that not only catered to people’s tastes, but challenged them as well. That was back in 1988, and we haven’t slowed down since. By 1995, John’s beer had become so popular that he decided to open a larger brewery, along with a bottling plant to keep up with demand. Today, what was once one man’s pint-filled dream has become the Goose Island empire you know and love.

PROHIBITION ANNIVERSARY - MUTE
25 years ago this month the 21st amendment repealing prohibition went into effect, and the idea that folks could be intimidated by law to forego intoxicants was abandoned by all but Anti-Saloon Leaguers and the WCTU. The 'Roaring Twenties' got it's name from the lunacy unleased by the unpopular law - with its flappers - the Blackbottom, the Shimmy, and the Charleston. It caused the World to look askance at the United States and become shocked and worried when a wave of lawlessness followed a breakdown of decorum. Bootlegging was another sinister development. Gangsterism was a natural sequel. Al Capone, commisar of vice and corruption became a front page figure and a millionaire on the easdy money involved in evading the law. STORY MADE FROM FILM Various shots of American Taverns or bar-rooms. People marching. GV White House & Congress. People dancing in the 20's. Charleston. Night Club dancers almost nude. Police smashing bottles and barrels of illegal whisky. Making arrests at speak-easy. Wrecked car - covered with bullet holes. Al Capone arrives at court. GV Men working 'still' in woods. Police arrive and smash same. GV Capitol building. Newspaper headlines - Prohibition the end. Broadway at night. Dancing in club.

Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer 2012
Humans have been putting all sorts of things in barrels for a very long time. The most interesting? Beer. Barrel aged beer has become a mainstay in craft beer culture and is sought out for its complexity, creativity, and scarcity. From sour to stout, bourbon barrel to port barrel, we explore a snippet of the culture that is barrel aged beer through the lens of the most unique beer festival in the United States. FOBAB.
60 breweries from all over the US come to Chicago and showcase over 180 barrel aged beers. These beers are often the brewers rarest and most complex product, and something each brewer puts a lot of thought, time, and effort into. FOBAB is put on every year by the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Sisters Camelot Canvass Union Picket at Harriet Brewery
Sisters Camelot Canvas Union pickets at Harriet Brewery, the union is not recognized by SC management collective, after striking for more than a year. The canvassers are members of Twin Cities Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) headquartered across the street. Some from other unions joined the picket in support, with AFSCME, CWA & Teamsters locals backing the boycott of Sisters Camelot.

Event:
Official Event Description from SCCU :
Harriet Brewing and Tap Room is holding a SCAB FUNDRAISER for Sisters Camelot, a business that the IWW has been striking for over a year, through the self-organized Sisters Camelot Canvass Union (SCCU).
Sisters Camelot fired one of these workers on th the IWW on March 4th, 2013. Since then, the workers have been on strike. The National Labor Relations Board has consistently ruled in favor of the striking workers, and Sisters Camelot responded with ever-more-embarrassing tactics: allowing a notoriously misogynistic union-busting lawyer, John Hauge, to represent them pro bono, and even encouraging an attack on IWW members on May Day (of all days, they attack us on a day memorializing the fight for the 8-hour day!).
The IWW has called for a Complete Boycott.
The following unions have signed solidarity statements and pledged to encourage and enforce the boycott: AFSCME 34, AFSCME 3800, CWA 7250, and TEAMSTERS 638. The Twin Cities General Defense Committee has also condemned the Sisters Camelot Collective and thrown their full solidarity to the striking workers.
These striking workers have endured over a year of precarious existence, living with extremely few means, all as a result of the Sisters Camelot collective and their allies engaging in classic capitalist union busting techniques.
These workers provided approximately 95% of the Sisters Camelot funding base, as canvassers. They are on strike. Supporting a fundraiser is SCAB WORK.
The IWW has always enjoyed the Harriet Brewing Tap Room. Immediately across from our office, we have supported it and been customers since day one.
We assumed that this error was merely that - an error made without knowledge and in good faith. We assumed that after we reached out to the manager and owner and explained the situation, they would cancel the event.
But for the past two weeks, through emails, documents dropped off at the tap room, and many many phone calls, the management of the Tap Room has refused to respond.
We went in one last time on Thursday, and explained that if they did not cancel the fundraiser, we would picket, and that this picket would hurt their business. This is, after all, the intent of any picket. We told them we didn't want this to happen, especially to the workers at the brewery, but that we have to look out for our Fellow Workers in the union first and foremost. We practically begged them to cancel this event.
But they haven't.

Beer Distributors in Connecticut- Hartford Distributors
The Best of Both Worlds
Through their 2009 merger, Franklin Distributors and Hartford Distributors, Inc. have created Connecticut's leading beverage wholesaler. With Anheuser-Busch InBev throughout Hartford and Tolland Counties and a world class portfolio of craft and specialty imported beers throughout all of eastern Connecticut, HDI now offers the best of both worlds to its customers.
Hartford Distributors, Inc./Franklin Fine Beers is a merger of two family operated businesses that grew up alongside each other. Although the companies grew and developed via different paths, the two families had very similar value systems. Honesty, Customer Service, Charity, Community-centric outlook, and knowledgeable consultative sales departments were common values. HDI grew with a few, very large volume and successful brands, while Franklin Distributors took on many small, specialized import and craft brands and grew them one placement at a time.
Hartford Distributors, Inc. was incorporated in 1944 and started out as a very small Anheuser-Busch distributorship in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. Throughout the years HDI has steadily grown and outgrew three locations. HDI relocated twice in East Hartford and in 1981 moved to our current location in Manchester.
Jules Hollander had been a Schlitz distributor in Virginia and recognized the changing landscape. He sold his successful distributorship and sought out an Anheuser-Busch distributorship. He purchased HDI in 1963. Along with his sons, Ross and Bob, the business grew tremendously.
Franklin Distributors, Inc. was incorporated in 1974 by Austin J. Stack and Richard Cunningham as an import and specialty beer wholesaler. They opened out of a barn in East Hartford and their delivery areas included upper Hartford County and a small section of Tolland County.
The Stack Family grew their distribution area to include five counties in eastern Connecticut. Before merging with Hartford Distributors, Franklin Distributors had outgrown their new 38,000 square foot warehouse in South Windsor.
Both the Hollander Family and Stack Family are proud to have their fourth generations working in the business. We all grew up in the beer business and it is both a tradition and a labor of love.
Subsequent to our merger Hartford Distributors, Inc./Franklin Fine Beers purchased the distribution rights of Dwan Distributors, primarily an Anheuser-Busch and Heineken distributorship in Litchfield County, CT. We now operate in six counties, covering over half the state.

Gringolandia Super Pils The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer are hopping to it with 5 Rabbit Cerveceria's Grigolandia Super Pils.
Brewed by: 5 Rabbit Cerveceria Illinois, United States
Gringolandia is an affectionate term used by many Latinos to refer to the United States. We’re using the term to paint a picture of our collective 5 Rabbit experience as a Latin-based company in the exciting melting pot that is 21st century Chicagoland, and to brew beers that reflect that experience. It’s our tribute to the American craft beer movement.
After staking out our Latin credentials with several exciting, ingredient-based beers in the “5″ series, we felt it was time to expand our range. These beers are our own interpretations of some popular craft beer styles, changed up a little to make them our own distinct beers different from anyone else’s.
Super Pils is a classic pilsner character in a big, bold beer that drinks like an IPA. Euro-pils character, but bolder. Cool-fermented with our house ale yeast for a clean, smooth flavor with just the barest hint of fruitines. Perfect balance of malt and hops in classic pils fashion—just stronger. Unfiltered for better body and foam.
