Peak District Walk - The Great Ridge - Mam Tor & Lose Hill Walk
This weeks wander was a relatively short one but one of those classic Peak District routes, The Great Ridge. My partner Lisa and I met up with some of her friends from work at Hope before walking over towards Castleton, The Broken Road and up on to Mam Tor after a quick stop at the Blue John Cafe. We picked a great spot for lunch overlooking the Hope Valley before heading along the Great Ridge to Lose Hill via Hollins Cross and Back Tor. The sun came out as we were walking the ridge so the gentle stroll back to Hope was great. If you would like to see the map and download a GPX route file you can find the links in the list below.

Peak District - Mam Tor and the Great Ridge Walk
This is an easy walk over and beyond the Peak District's most fascinating hill - Mam Tor. Well laid footpaths most of the way and the short fairly easy ascents. You will head over Mam Tor then follow the crest of The Great Ridge which separates the beautiful Hope and Edale Valleys until you reach its end at Lose Hill.
Mam Tor circular walk-Peak disctrict
This is an easy walk over and beyond the Peak District's most fascinating hill - Mam Tor. Steeped in history dating back to the Bronze Age, the hill is also an amazing example of geology and it is still possible to see it shaping itself today. The walk is along simple well laid footpaths most of the way and the ascents are fairly easy. You will head over Mam Tor then follow the crest of The Great Ridge who's grand profile separates the beautiful Hope and Edale Valleys until you reach its end at Lose Hill, another hill with an interesting history. This walk is an amazing mix of natural history combined with vast and beautiful panoramic views into the heart of the Peak District. This is an ideal walk when you only have a few hours.I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor ( Life and Death of a Certain K. Lose Hill to Mam Tor Ridge Walk and Winnats Pass - 24/11/2019
Today's trip saw me park up at Castleton Visitor Centre car park and set off up Lose Hill. Quite a climb on a foggy but fairly mild morning, from the view point on Lose Hill I followed the ridge across to Back Tor and then on to Mam Tor. Very busy along the ridge on this Sunday morning. The drop off Mam Tor saw me head towards the top of Winnats Pass, somewhere I've not previously walked. The views from up there are pretty special even on a misty lunchtime. I spent quite a while exploring up on Winnats Pass before dropping back down into Castleton.

Mam Tor road. Castleton.
Mam Tor road, or the road to nowhere is in Castleton, peak district of the UK. Built in 1819 when the industrial revolution was in full swing. The idea was to build a less steep road for the packhorses to navigate between Sheffield and Chapel en le Frith, other than going over the Winnats pass. The only problem was that this road was built on the `shivering Mountain` a.k.a. Mam Tor. ( Mother Hill )Thanks for watching.

CASTLETON WALK | Castleton, Peak District, Derbyshire, England ????
CASTLETON WALK | A short walk through the village of Castleton in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England ????
Castleton attracts large numbers of tourists, and there are many pubs (some with accommodation), tea shops and guest houses to supply their needs. There is also a large car park, an information centre which houses Castleton Museum and visitor centre.
Castleton is a beautiful village situated at the head of the Hope Valley in the heart of the Peak District National Park. The village is popular for its show caves, history, shops, Christmas lights, garland ceremony, Winnats Pass, Cave Dale and for those wishing to walk on the numerous footpaths in the area . Surrounded by hillsides and overlooked by Mam Tor (the shivering mountain) and the ancient Peveril Castle.

Castleton - a short history…
Castleton was founded after the building of Peveril Castle in 1086, the castle was built by William Peveril, son of William the Conqueror. There was possibly an Anglo Saxon settlement on the east side of the village near Hope as there is an embankment running through the village, and s shaped strip fields on the east side, known as furlongs. The village developed under the protection of the garrison and grew and prospered from this period. The population was made up of farmers, retailers, men at arms and others. The village was on the main packhorse routes and an important stopover in coaching days in later centuries. It was also an important lead mining and market village. The oldest part of the village is by the river, Peakshole Water near Cavern Walk. Along Back Street can be seen several folds where houses were built around 3 sides of the courtyard, which had a narrow opening onto the street, where animals were penned at night.
This picturesque village is now designated a conservation area and much of its history can be read in its layout and architecture.
Geology
Castleton is on the boundary of the northern gritstone ‘Dark Peak’, and the southern limestone ‘ White Peak’.
The ridge to the north marks the beginning of the gritstone / shale beds giving rise to the high gritstone moorland plateaux. The gritstone shale bands can be seen in the face of Mam Tor and the instability of the shale beds is illustrated in the massive landslip on the A 625 at Mam Tor.
The hills to the south of the village are ancient coral reefs made of carboniferous limestone and behind them is the massive limestone laid down in a warm coral sea. The cave and underground river systems contain spectacular formations. The joints and cracks have been mineralised and contain veins of lead, fluorspar, barytes and calcite.
In Treak Cliff hill, a very pretty form of fluorspar, only found in this area, can be seen in two show caves. It is known as Blue John and is mined to make jewellery, which is sold locally. The mineral crystals were impregnated naturally during the formation with hydro – carbons, possibly altered by latent radio-activity in the rocks, to give them an attractive blue and yellow banding.
There are 4 caves at Castleton accessible by guided tour. Treak Cliff cavern and Blue John cavern contain beautiful caves decorated with stalactites formations, and blue john stone. Peak cavern is the resurgence of a huge river system. In its enormous entrance are the remains of a rope-making walk. Speedwell mine is an old lead mine and visitors are taken along a flooded tunnel by boat.
This walk through Castleton starts outside the Swiss Cottage hotel and B&B and ends right outside the Castleton museum and visitor centre.

Hiking Mam Tor and Lords seat Peak District in 60mph WINDS
Enjoy a short climb to Mam Tor and Lords Seat on this walk in the Peak District. Mam Tor is a 517 m hill near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire, England. Its name means mother hill, so-called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of mini-hills beneath it.

Mam Tor Ridge Walk - 25/06/2018 - 8 Miles
Today (25/06/2018) I met up with 7 complete strangers to complete an 8 mile walk from Castleton, up Cave Dale and around to Mam Tor, then following the Ridge Walk over to Lose Hill before dropping down back into Castleton.
6 of the 7 strangers are all fellow hikers who will be walking 26+ miles through the Peak District 5 weeks after this walk on the Macmillan Peak District Mighty Hike, raising money quite obviously for Macmillan Cancer Support. This was an opportunity to get to know a few of them and for us all to get in a little hill walking.
A glorious hot day made it harder going but I think we all enjoyed the company of fellow Mighty Hikers.

Rambling Castleton - Lose Hill and Mam Tor
Sunday 2nd. April and Rugby Ramblers are off to Castleton. There are three walks planned for today ranging from 8.5 to 14 miles in length. This is an account of the shortest walk. It starts with an amble acroos the fields and then a stiff climb to the summit of Lose Hill. A fine ridge walk follows along to Mam Tor. The walk ends with a rather tricky descent down Cave Dale, made difficult by the stream running down the path, making the rock strewn path rather slippery.
