Roadtrip! Come With Me to Castle In The Clouds in New Hampshire!
OPEN HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION! :)
I wish we had more time here! Sadly, I could not get many indoor videos because it was so unexpectedly crowded, we found out as we left, that there we also two huge tour buses there! There were people inside everywhere :0 I was disappointed in my childhood memory of that marble bathroom, oh well, it was still pretty awesome! What I had in my memory as marble, was the pretty white tile.
The place was amazing, loved all the Art Deco touches! It was built in 1913 - 1914. The bathrooms feature needle showers, and the house had central vacuums (very forward at the time the house was built), an intercom system, and refrigeration, which didn't exist in buildings at that time. And the secret room!!!
The story of this place Lucknow, is that the fellow (Mr. Plant) was a millionaire who made his money from a shoe manufacturing business. Mr. Plant built Lucknow for his second wife Olive, after selling his business for a significant profit. He went broke after some bad investments. A lawyer friend held their mortgage and allowed the Mr. Plant and his wife to remain in the mansion despite their going broke. The wife Olive, was younger, and after Mr. Plant passed away, she moved out, destitute, and went on to live with family (I believe California), until she passed in the 1970's.

Do you want to make some extra money (or quite a bit!) renting your spare room or even your couch to travelers short term on Airbnb?? Some folks are quite creative, turning their dining room into a bedroom to rent, or their basement, or garage. Even a tent outside! Some people use vintage campers or yurts.

06-01-10: Driving through the White Mountains of New Hampshire
06-01-10: After a long day of geocaching in New Hampshire and one find in Maine we headed back to Smuggs. This was just one particularly pretty stretch of highway along the road near Franconia Notch State Park. This was also the first and only time we spotted a roadside Moose. It was right after Dusk (when they are most active) and he was just standing there next to the highway. It was dark and foggy so we found (one of the very few) McDonalds and took about a 30 minute break to give the Moose time to cross the roads so we could try to avoid them :)

Get a tour of the mansion! There's also some horses near the end of the video. They were super friendly horses, too.
Castle in the Clouds (or Lucknow mansion) is a 16-room mansion and a 5,500-acre (2,200 ha) mountaintop estate in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. It's owned by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, and operated by the Castle Preservation Society. It overlooks Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains.
