Tucson, Arizona 005 - Bike Trails - Rillito River
The Rillito River is on the north side of Tucson at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains. The path taken on the video runs from Dodge to the Santa Cruz River. We will pick it up at the parking lot south of Thoryndale/River and Orange Grove. From here to Doge it's a 10 mile ride one way. With homes, parks, Tucson Auto Mall, Tucson Mall, and my office at Tierra Antigua Realty along the route. Bike Ride to Tucson RC Plane Park
A fine day for a bike ride on the Tucson Loop. We decided to go counter-clockwise around the city: Alvernon north to the Rillito River, then west to the Santa Cruz River, and then south and east onto the Julian Wash bikeway. While we were out, we found the remote-control aircraft airport and talked with the pilots for a while.
Logged 38 miles over 2:22 ride time, averaging 16 MPH, which was good.
The camera is on my Longbikes Slipstream recumbent. Yes, I know it bounces around a lot. :-)

Take a ride with us as we travel the entire Pima County Loop is this time-lapse video. Ride the Santa Cruz River Park, the Julian Wash and Harrison Greenway, the Canada del Oro River Park, Rillito River Park and the Pantano River Park. Travel under major thoroughfares, past county parks and landmarks, through downtown Tucson, to the wide-open spaces in less-populated parts of Pima County.

Pantano River Park Dedication
Pima County officials and locals celebrated the completion of one of the last sections of The Loop on Saturday, May 21, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m., along the Pantano River north of Broadway Boulevard.
Dignitaries present included District 2 Supervisor Ramón Valadez, District 4 Supervisor Ray Carroll, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, and Tucson City Council member Paul Cunningham, representing Ward 2.
The first 100 children to received free BMX bicycle helmets, bike bells, bike safety information, and new Loop maps. The Pima County Public Library Bookbike was also available at the event.
The event celebrated the completion of three projects along the shared-use path that stretch from Rita Road to Tanque Verde Road. The first project completed the section of the Pantano River Park between Kenyon Drive and Broadway Boulevard, including an underpass. A second project completed the Harrison Greenway portion by filling a 3.2-mile gap between Irvington Road and Mesquite Elementary. The third project, Speedway Boulevard to 5th Street, connected existing segments of the Pantano River Park with a pedestrian bridge that closed a critical gap along the Pantano Wash.
Pima County’s Project Management Office served as project manager for completion of this section of The Loop. Other contributing partners were the Arizona Department of Military Affairs, Arizona Department of Transportation, City of Tucson, Regional Transportation Authority, PSOMAS, AECOM, KE&G Construction and Clear Contracting.

The Loop - 100 Miles of Paved Cycling Pathway in Tucson
On March 17, 2018 Pima County is celebrating the completion of the The Loop – a system of more than 100 miles of paved pathways that runs in Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley, South Tucson and unincorporated Pima County. It began after the historic floods of 1983 as a way of building banks to try to prevent future catastrophic floods so the recreational component was added which serves pedestrians, bicyclists and equestrians.

More than 1,000 people of all ages turned out to Launch The Loop on Oct. 22. They walked, skated and biked on the Santa Cruz and Rillito river park paths, which were officially joined in a celebration Saturday, October 22, 2011. The connection of the Santa Cruz and Rillito river park paths creates 23 miles of car-free pedestrian and bicycle paths from West Silverlake Road in the south to North Craycroft Road in the east.
When completed, The Loop will be 55 miles of paths connecting the Rillito, Santa Cruz and Pantano river parks with greenways along the Julian Wash and Harrison Road, along with links to Marana and Oro Valley.

About the Park
Tucson Mountain Park was established April 1929. The Pima County Parks Commission, with C. B. Brown as its chairman, was established to oversee the park. At approximately 20,000 acres, the park is one of the largest natural resource areas owned and managed by a local government in the U.S. The park has approximately 62 miles of non-motorized shared-use trials. The park’s trails are open to hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers, and provide a wide range of outstanding experiences, including technical challenges, and breathtaking views. Gates Pass overlook includes interpretive displays and historic structures. Picnicking and wildlife viewing opportunities are located throughout the park.

The Loop is a system of paved, shared-use paths and short segments of buffered bike lanes connecting the Rillito, Santa Cruz, and Pantano River Parks with the Julian Wash and Harrison Road Greenways. More than 120 miles of paved pathways and bike lanes have already been completed with an additional 11 miles planned or currently under construction.
The Loop extends through unincorporated Pima County, Marana, Oro Valley, Tucson, and South Tucson. The connections are the result of Pima County's cooperative partnerships with these jurisdictions.
The Loop connects parks, trailheads, bus and bike routes, workplaces,
restaurants, schools, hotels and motels, shopping areas, and entertainment venues. Visitors and Pima County residents can enjoy The Loop on foot, bikes, skates, and horses.

Sadly these were the last shots from this GH2 as it is in for repair.
