Winter on Colorado's Western Slope
Photographs of snowy scenes taken on western Colorado's Grand Mesa, in and around the Colorado National Monument, in the Redlands Mesa neighborhood of Grand Junction, and along the Colorado River in Fruita during January and early February of a number of years. I took the pictures. I shoot western American landscapes for a number of micro-stock agencies, but these are my arty shots. It's fun to share them here. The beautiful music is a public domain non-attribution performance of Beethoven's Fur Elise from the YouTube audio library.
Grand Mesa National Forest Back Roads
Google Maps took us on a very circuitous route when we missed our freeway exit. It was a great adventure full of beautiful views and wonderful silence except for the sound of birds and running water.

ABOUT COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT
Located near Fruita and Grand Junction in Colorado, Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles.
Plateaus and canyons, erosion-created masterpieces, the Colorado River, short hikes, back country hikes, a 23-mile rim rock drive, camping, picnicking, bicycling, and rock climbing are all awaiting the visitor.
The national monument is pleasantly scenic, not one of the major attractions of the Southwest, but well worth visiting for at least a few hours. The cliffs are made of Entrada/Wingate/Kayenta sandstone layers in various shades of red and white and so the canyons are similar to others in nearby states, especially Canyon de Chelly in Arizona and parts of Canyonlands in Utah.
The establishment of the national monument in 1911 was largely due several years of campaigning by one man, John Otto, who explored the canyons and single-handedly built many miles of trails through the area.
There is one paved road through Colorado National Monument, beginning south of Grand Junction - just 4 miles from the town center, this flat city street (Broadway, later Monument Road) crosses the Colorado River, passes the entrance gate and becomes steep and twisting, round many 15 mph corners and through one tunnel, as it ascends the towering red cliffs. The road (now the Rim Rock Drive) then follows the edge of the Uncompahgre Plateau for 20 miles, giving access to 16 major viewpoints and seven trailheads. Towards the north end it passes the main visitor center and camping area, before winding down equally steeply, through two more tunnels, and eventually re-crossing the Colorado River into Fruita.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here in this beautiful National Park Service unit!

Colorado National Monument (USA) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Colorado National Monument in The USA.
On the western edge of the state of Colorado and close to the city of Grand Junction and the village of Fruita, is the Colorado National Monument, one of the most fascinating areas in the United States Of America. From the twenty three mile long Rim Rock Drive there is a magnificent view across the eroded rock walls of the mighty canyons. Fir, juniper and mahogany trees form the main vegetation on the high plateaus that are located above the sparsely covered canyons. The amazing rock walls plunge down almost three hundred metres to the bottom of the dried out canyons below that are dominated by typical desert vegetation. There is a kind of magic here, a special feeling: and it is easy to become enchanted by this truly amazing region that has been sculpted by the natural forces of nature.
