Nikko Rinnoji Taiyuin Temple (輪王寺 大ゆ院) and Mausoleum, Nikko District, Japan
Nikko Rinnoji Taiyuin Temple and Mausoleum is located in the Nikko district of Tochigi prefecture in Japan. This temple is part of the Nikko UNESCO world heritage temples and shrines.
This temple is mostly known as the mausoleum of the third Tokugawa shogun Iemitsu (grandson of the first Tokugawa, Ieyasu). It's architectural technique and style as well as the arrangement of the buildings are virtually the same as those of the original Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. Various gates approaching the main temple hall, are as extravagant as the original Nikko Toshogu shrine.
Hope you get a chance to visit this temple and enjoy it.
Nikko Rinnoji Temple (日光 輪王寺), Nikko, Japan
Rinnoji Temple (日光 輪王寺) is part of the Nikko UNESCO World Heritage temples and shrines and is located in the Nikko district. It is the largest temple in the Nikko area.
This temple belongs to the Tendai Sect of Buddhism and one of the three largest temples for the followers of this sect.
Two main buildings are part of this temple. One is called Sanbutsu-do, which houses three large statues of Buddha, which are wrapped by Gold. Unfortunately we are not allowed to video the insides of these statues. The second is Dai Goma-do, which is used to conduct Goma, which is a Buddhist ritual that involves creating a Holy Fire to pray to Lord Buddha.
There is also a large bronze lantern and a piller located in the temple precincts. The name of the piller is Sorinto Piller. It is built to commemorate world peace.
Enjoy!

Nikko (日光) World Heritage Temples and Shrines, Nikko, Japan
Nikko district (日光)is located in Tochigi prefecture (栃木県)in Japan. A set of temples and shrines that are located in Nikko national park are designated as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites.
Three sites, Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple and Futarasan Shrine; known as Nikko Sannai are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Temples and Shrines.
Toshogu Shrine is the mausoleu of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first Tokugawa shogun.
Futarasan Shrine is dedicated to Mt. Futara (Futarasan). Mt. Futara is also known as Mt. Nantai (Nantaisan), features a beautiful set of lakes and hot spas.
Rinnoji Temple is one of the three largest temples of the Tendai sect of Buddhism.
In addition to these three beautiful sites, Shinkyo Sacred Bridge and Rinnoji Taiyuin Temple are also considered part of the Nikko Temples and Shrines.
Shinkyo Sacred Bridge is one of the three most uniques bridges in Japan over the Daiya River. This bridge is considered as the gateway to the Nikko Temples and Shrines.
Rinnoji Taiyuin Temple is a mausoleum of the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu.
Every year, millions of visitors come to visit Nikko shrines and temples from all over the world.
I will put separate videos of each of these temples and shrines, this video is intended to be a summary of these places.
Enjoy!!!
Toshogu Shrine and Rinnoji Temple, Nikko, Japan
Nikko is a small city in mountainous northern japan. It is home to the Toshogu Shrine, a world heritage site. This shrine is famous for its lavishly decorated mausoleums and is home to the Tokugawa Leyasu, the Tokugawan Shogun who promoted peace throughout Japan. The primary religion in Japan is a fusion of Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto buildings are called Shrines whereas Buddist buildings are called Temples. Both religions are apparent in the architectural styles of Toshogu Shrine and Rinnoji Temple. However, I prefer the Shinto style for its complex carvings and gold plated emblems. Nikko is known for its see no evil, speak no evil, and hear no evil monkeys. That is where the concept originated from. It is also home to Mt. Nantai, one of Japan's Holy Mountains.
I had a chance to pray in a Shinto shrine and a Buddhist temple. I bought a happiness charm for myself and a successful in business charm for my parents.

The Gohan Shiki (Rice Meal Ceremony) is held at the Rinnoji temple in Nikko. Visitors take part in the ritual of compulsory rice eating. Cooked rice are offered on a large plate and every grain are urged to eat. The big bowl contains 5.4 litres of rice.
No one actually eats the rice, but it is said that those who participate in the ceremony will have a family fortune and a healthy life. This sacred rice dedication ceremony is part of Nikko's ancient mountain Buddhism.
Harmony abounds in Nikko. Nature and Japan's two major religions, Buddhism and Shinto live side by side. The Toshogu Shrine of the deified shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu stands near the Buddhist Rinnoji Temple, established in 766 by the priest Shodo. Even within the Rinnoji Temple itself Senju Kannon, Amida Nyorai and Batō Kannon witness the native mountain worship of Gohan Shiki.
Senju Kannon 千手観音 is the thousand-armed Goddess of Mercy who sees all hears all.
Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀如来 grants reborn in the Pure Land where it is much easier for a being to work towards enlightenment.
Batō Kannon 馬頭観音 helps the poor and looks after the souls of the reincarnated who come to earth as animals.
(Kannon is the goddess of mercy who has prolonged her own eternal enlightenment to help everyone who suffers in this world.)

Chuzen-ji (Tachiki Kannon 立木観音) Temple, Near Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
坂東巡礼 第18番 中禅寺 立木観音
Chuzen-ji Temple is located near Chuzenji-ko (Chuzenji Lake), about 3000 feet above sea level. Chuzenji Lake is about an hour bus ride up the mountain from Nikko bus stop.
Nikko UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains many great sites in one single area. Foreign visitors usually only see these temples and neglect to go to Chuzenji Lake. Chuzenji Lake and the water falls there are one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Specifically the fact that the lake is formed between mountains at 3000 feet above sea level. If you go to Nikko, you can cover both the Nikko temples and Chuzenji Lake. See the Nikko temples during the morning and go to Chuzenji Lake in the evening.
Many foreign embassies that are in Tokyo have guest houses for their Ambassadors near Chuzenji Lake.
Chuzen-ji Temple's main deity is Tachiki Kannon. You can see this beautiful Kannon statue in the Hondo (no photos allowed). Story has it that it was carved using a single Katsura tree hundreds of years ago.
First floor of the temple, provides great views of the mountains and the Chuzenji Lake.

Best places to visit in Nikko - Japan
A visit to the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, Japan. One of the famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It even has a lantern which was a gift by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) back in 1643 to the shogun.
