Ep. 63: Taos & Rio Grande del Norte National Monument | New Mexico RV camping travel
After replacing two worn trailer tires on our RV in Alamosa, Colorado, we head south into New Mexico and score what may well be our best campground experience ever near the town of Questa in Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. While there, we do some hiking into the Red River Gorge, experience the adobe architecture of Taos, immerse ourselves in native culture at Taos Pueblo, and explore the Taos Mountains communities of Taos Ski Valley and Red River.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

National Forest Closed - Rio Grande del Norte NM Loop Hike
The Carson National Forest was closed near Taos, NM. We drove to Taos on the first leg of our 4 state highpoint trip. So with Wheeler Mountain out of the question we began looking around Taos for other hiking opportunities. We discovered the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. We had never heard of it and obviously didn't know anything about it. What we found was a really cool canyon hike.
Afterward we had a nice lunch near the river and a drive to the bridge over the river.

I can't wait to go back in an RV. Dare to dream! Much warmer and dryer in Rio Grande del Norte National Monument than in the higher elevations of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Red River. Apparently, it rains a lot during July and August at the higher elevations. It was much dryer (freezing cold too) during our May and June Red River area camping trips.

Rio Grande del Norte - A National Monument
The Rio Grande del Norte contains some of the most spectacular lands and public hunting & fishing habitat in all of New Mexico. Just above the Colorado border, the Rio Grande cuts into the Servilleta lava flows that make up the Taos Plateau. Further south, at the New Mexico state line, the gorge is 150 feet across; the river 200 feet below. The gorge expands as it continues south, west of Questa, reaching over a half mile wide with the Rio Grande appearing as a glinting green ribbon 800 feet below.
Rio Grande del Norte | Pew & This American Land
New Mexico's Rio Grande del Norte is a beautifully diverse landscape, home to migratory birds, elk and deer.
Efforts are underway to safeguard 235,000 acres of this region, including the iconic Ute Mountain and part of the Rio Grande gorge. Legislation would also preserve traditional hunting, grazing, fishing and wood-gathering for local farmers and ranchers.
This episode of This American Land was produced in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Red River Trip Hike to the Convergence of the Rio Grande & Red Rivers
While camping in the Red RIver, New Mexico area several day hikes were accomplished. One such hike was to the confluence of the Rio Grande and Red River. Our approach was from the plateau in the Wild Rivers Recreation Area of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. We descended from the Little Arsenic Trailhead down to the Rio Grande on a switchback trail that dropped 700 feet in less than a mile. From there we proceeded along the river's edge to the point where the Rio Grande meets the Red River. At this point you are directly below the area called La Junta -- a point on the plateau that rises 800 feet. From the confluence of the rivers it was a 5-mile out-and-back hike. The strenuous part of the hike in on the return where you climb 700 feet to reach the trailhead at the top of the plateau. The best time to do this hike is early morning -- the earlier, the better. And remember, it's a fee area and you need to pack-in, pack-out everything. You won't regret having done this hike and don't forget to wade in the water of both rivers at the point of their intersection, but be careful as the rocks are slippery and the current is swift.

New Mexico's Rio Grande Gorge Named a National Monument | Pew
President Obama has designated five new national monuments, including one in northern New Mexico that encompasses more than 200,000 acres of spectacular wild lands. The Rio Grande del Norte is home to one of the great migratory bird routes in the world, and habitat for bear, deer, elk, and bighorn sheep. The monument designation will preserve this special land and the culture and traditions of its people.
The President also named Washington State's San Juan Islands and historic sites in Delaware, Maryland, and Ohio as national monuments.
