Ferry connecting Rising Sun and Rabbit Hash continues service after 70 years
RISING SUN, Ind. (WKRC) - It's been 70 years since there was last a ferry connecting Rising Sun, Ind. and Rabbit Hash, Ky., but Wednesday saw a new ferry resume that service.
The celebration included costumes from 1948, the last time a ferry made the trip between the two local cities.
The small ferry boat that was at Rabbit Hash sank, Dan Lee, CEO of Full House Resorts, said. The owner did not replace it.
The new ferry, called Miss Rising Sun, was put in by the company which owns Rising Star Casino in Rising Sun, which until today was least geographically accessible casino in the area.
What used to be nearly an hour drive from Rabbit Hash via a bridge 20 miles away now takes four minutes to cross the Ohio River.
It cut the distance from Florence or the airport in half, Lee said. All of a sudden, we are the closest casino to many people that we were not close to before.
The casino company picked up the entire $1.7 million price tag for the ferry, with the hope that it'll make the money back from people like Candy McVey, looking for a shortcut to the slots.
In the future, it might save time and gas and I'm looking forward to see if that happens, McVey said. To get to the casino, strictly the casino.
Before officially launching today, the ferry had extensive practice before beginning revenue service.
Our initial training has been in the worst possible conditions, Geoff Hatfield, the caption of the ferry, said. The river has been high, lots of debris, big currents, the vessel and captains handled it as if it were a normal day's crossing.
The ferry runs seven days a week with one-way trips costing $5 and round-trip costing $8.
The name of the ferry will also officially change from Miss Rising Sun to Lucky Lady once some additional paperwork goes through.

Southeast Indiana casinos left out of gaming expansion bill
RISING SUN, Ind. (WKRC) - Gaming communities in Indiana are about to take a big hit. State lawmakers are leaving them out of a gaming expansion bill.
The new law expands sports betting, but it takes away from the amount of cash that casinos pump into the community. In Rising Sun, the mayor expects to lose $633,000 per year. Brent Bascom says city leaders will have to take a hard look at their budget.
It's a shocking number. There's no question about it,” said Bascom. We were holding up our end of the bargain. Why can't we just have a voice at the table?
Now, law enforcement, the parks department and road infrastructure could all take a big hit in Rising Sun.
“There's a lot of different things where that money helps us, so we have to prepare for the new reality of what life in Rising Sun is going to be like,” said Bascom.
Up the road in Lawrenceburg, home to Hollywood Casino, Mayor Kelly Mollaun is a bit more optimistic.
“We think it will be minimal. That's what we always expect. Every two years, we're fighting for our gaming dollars,” said Mollaun.
Mollaun estimates Lawrenceburg will lose south of $500,000 a year. While it's still a lot of money, Mollaun is banking on Hollywood Casino drawing bigger crowds than smaller casinos like Rising Star; that could bring in more money.
What we would do is we would have to budget accordingly. You can't budget what you don't have,” said Mollaun.
While both mayors will find different ways to deal with cuts, both are wondering why lawmakers forgot about their communities.
“I think we should be treated just like everybody else,” said Mollaun.
All four legislators who represent southeast Indiana voted against the bill.
CEO of Rising Star Casino's parent company suggests it may relocate to western Indiana
RISING SUN, Ind. (WKRC) - The CEO of a local casino's parent company suggests it could relocate.
Full House Resorts owns the Rising Star riverboat in Rising Sun. The company wants Indiana lawmakers to allow it to move unused games there to a prospective new casino in Terre Haute.
If that doesn't happen, Full House may try to move Rising Star to a less-saturated western Indiana casino market. That would be a major blow to Ohio County, which has relied on the tax revenue the casino has provided since it opened as Grand Victoria in 1996.
Casino ferry proposal draws opposition from some Rabbit Hash residents
Full House Resorts, which owns the Rising Star Casino in Rising Sun, Indiana, is asking Boone County for permission to put in a ferry that would dock in Rabbit Hash.

MS Lucky Lady ferries its first customers across the Ohio River
RISING SUN, Ind. (WKRC) - Operation of a new ferry began Oct. 3. The MS Lucky Lady runs between Rabbit Hash, Kentucky and Rising Sun, Indiana.
Its maiden voyage was at 11 a.m.
The purpose of this ferry to help the Rising Star Casino on the Indiana side. To drive from much of Boone County would take 45 minutes to an hour. The ferry takes just four or five minutes.
The Rising Star Casino is the hardest of Indiana's casinos to get to in the area. When it opened, it was the only casino. Now there are several casinos and racinos in the Tri-State.
It's no secret why the corporation that owns the casino paid the $1.7 million for the project. Obviously to generate business for the casino, said Full House Resorts CEO Dan Lee. We're there on the edge of the river. Through fate of history there doesn't happen to be a bridge here. The closest bridges are 20 miles away and so this gives us a direct connection to Boone County which has 120,000 people.
The MS Lucky Lady will run seven days a week. It's $5 one way or $8 round trip.
