Summer is a hot time in California.
What better plan than a canoe trip on the Russian River just outside of Healdsburg in Sonoma County?
Listen to the sound of the birds, the inflatable canoe squeaking along, the dip of the paddles, and the sounds of the river flowing by.

Navarro River - at the Floodgates
This is taken from the bridge ( junction hwy1 and hwy128) looking upstream (east). Things to notice - the white gate that will be closed and locked when the river begins to flood Highway 128. There is another set of gates a few miles further east on Highway 128 that are also locked. (just don't get caught between). Also notice how close the river is to the edge of the highway now.
With each storm event the river increases until the mouth of the river opens up and it flows again into the sea. This road still floods during a combination of heavy rainfall and high tides as this is an estuary.
When the mouth is closed this Laguna forms and continues upstream for about 3 miles. It is teaming with wildlife that can easily be viewed or photographed from a kayak on canoe. There is a free boat ramp just east of the floodgates a couple of hundred feet at a low spot on the highway.
