2019 Root River Paddle Challenge
2019 Root River Paddle Challenge. Bought a kayak this year and first time out was a float down the Root River in Caledonia (Racine), Wisconsin with my friends. Started at Linwood Park and finished at River Bend Nature Center for a 6.5 mile paddle. Perfect weather, didn't flip, and high water levels made for a fun day. Taken with an el cheapo Eken H9R action cam inside the waterproof housing.

Old Racine Roads
We had a outta towner here for the weekend.
He said the moment he got off the freeway and headed into Racine the roads got increasingly bad.
Then he hit Northwestern Ave. and almost turned around and went back home!
I guess i am just pretty use to lousy roads and streets here.
So we took the old Jalopy out for a test run.
I didn't see a problem?
Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Havenwoods (#704)
[Latest Airdate: May 10, 2018]
[Original Airdate: February 1, 2018]
Havenwoods is one of those neighborhoods in Milwaukee that we've always known. We just didn't know it had a name --- or so much industry --- or so much positive energy --- or a bona fide forest!
Lots of people know this neighborhood as home to Growing Power and Westlawn Gardens. Model train enthusiasts know this area because they know WMK Walthers, famous US manufacturer and distributor of model railroad equipment. Restaurants and culinary companies know about Havenwoods because they buy Kallas Honey and Dang That's Good soda. Hmong Americans know this community because of the Milwaukee Asian Public Market and because this neighborhood is home to the largest Hmong population in the state. And now John knows where to find Milwaukee Job Corps, TMJ Innovations, Court Lanes and the only urban forest in Wisconsin.
It was a joy to meet everyone in this revitalized area who helped us get to know Havenwoods!

Milwaukee: A City Built on Water | Program |
[Original Airdate: April 22, 2015]
Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Fish Creek & Ephraim (#612)
[Latest Airdate: January 4, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 9, 2017]
Fish Creek and Ephraim are just minutes away from each other in Door County. While these communities are really different, they are both part of the same wonderful Door County experience. We're on the bay (west) side --- also known as the busy side. Indeed, John had a full agenda, as do most tourists who come to this part of Door County, but this turned out to be one of the most relaxing episodes because that's how Fish Creek and Ephraim are. You can't help but walk a little slower, talk a little less and smile a little more. Well, John didn't follow suit on the talk a little less part because he's a television host and talking to people is what he does. And what fun conversations he had at Lautenbach's Orchard Country Winery and Market, Edgewood Orchard Galleries, Wilson's, and with everyone he met. And since John spent a good deal of time here acting, he couldn't wait to catch up with both famous theater groups. The busy side of the Door in September. We highly recommend it!

SUMMARY
--------------------
First, what not to do…
Before I dive into how I would spend my five minutes, let’s cover what not to do. It's the biggest mistake people make when they go to job fairs.
It’s the same issue I covered in The Number 1 Reason Why You Do Not Get Hired. It’s the same reason you don't get called back after a job fair.
It’s spending your time trying to get out everything there is to know about you, what you think are the highlights of your career (or studies), what you think are your best attributes, and what you think are your most desired skills.
Big mistake.
You spend too much time sharing and don’t know whether that’s what the employer needs to know!
How do you know what the employer seeks?
Try this…
Waltz up to the booth (or person or whoever looks like someone who knows what they’re doing), and say…
“Hi. My name’s Frankie Fabulous. I'd love to share a little bit about myself and learn about your company. Before I do that, could you tell me what you're looking for in an entry-level candidate?”
If you’re a professional…
“Hi. My name’s Susie Sensational. Could you tell me what the most important skills are in [insert whatever position it is you’re looking to attain]?”
Give them a minute or two to share that insight with you. They’ll go on with…
“Well, we're looking for somebody with this kind of background or these kind of skills or these kind of traits.”
You’ll hear a bunch of different stuff like detail-oriented, great communication skills, engineering students, so on and so forth.
Now, you’re a salesperson…
Collect the insight. Then, dive into your remaining 2-3 minutes with exactly how you match exactly what they’re looking for!
As soon as you leave, they’ll be thinking boy, that John Smith…he seemed to match exactly what we needed. We need to call him back.
A gold star…
Most booth people need to jot notes on your resume because they can’t possibly remember everyone.
As soon as you walk away, they scratch on your resume numbers or stars or whatever.
He’s a 2. She’s a 5. Give him a silver star. Give her a gold star. You get the picture.
And, you get a star from me for watching. Thanks!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wisconsin Dells (#209)
[Latest Airdate: June 8, 2017]
[Original Airdate: March 7, 2013]
Wow! And fun! Talk about something for everyone. The Wisconsin Dells has natural wonders and manmade adventures, decades-old businesses and brand new attractions - and we loved it all! Water -- as in a flood - is what formed the landscape, and water -- as in waterpark park capitol of the world -- is what makes the Wisconsin Dells the number one tourist destination in the State. Yes, John will try anything once, so he screams down the water slides, cruises up the rivers, bounces around the curves of the go cart track, and flies under the parking lot in a roller coaster and over a lake on a zipline. We discover HoChunk pride, appreciate HH Bennett's genius, and then there's Swiss Maid Fudge and Paul Bunyun's. Need we say more? (9 of 13)

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | The John Gurda Hour (#414)
[Original Airdate: April 23, 2015]
In our final episode of the season, it’s all about history and John Gurda - for an hour! During this season’s travels, John identified seven topics that he wanted to explore more fully: The Wade House (Greenbush), lannon stone (from Lannon – surprise!) and brownstone (Bayfield), Grant Park (South Milwaukee), the North Point Lighthouse (Milwaukee’s Lake Park), Great Lakes ship building (Sturgeon Bay) and the East Troy Electric Railroad (we don’t really have to tell you where this one is, right?).
In our regular community episodes of Around the Corner with John McGivern, we ask John Gurda to give us a three-minute version of the community’s history. Yep, three minutes. Well, for history buffs or nostalgic types, it’s just not enough time, right? So sit back and enjoy an hour of John Gurda relating what was by showing what is still here.
