A Thousand Sheep: Art and Territories, a Pathway to Social Change, Laurence Dube-Rushby, artist
A Conversation with the Landscape
Our relationship with the land, throughout human history, has been governed by two vital needs; finding food and defending ourselves. The response through farming and the military defence has progressively reshaped the British landscape and its ecology.
I created an art residency at the River Bourne Community Farm, Salisbury, UK, and was awarded an Arts Council England Grant to develop a large installation made from sheep fleece dyed with madder plants.
A Thousand Sheep was an open invitation to the public to get involved in making a large piece of contemporary artwork from natural resources. The process was to provide the trigger for conversations and reflection on our impact on the environment and shape of the landscape.
Through a commitment to using traditional processes and materials, the piece challenged the limits of sustainable living in a contemporary context.
The project has seen over 15000 visitors and around 3000 participants in educational workshops and craft making days.
I have witnessed changes in attitudes in people within the community involved; the public became part of the work which was created, one conversation after the other, over 3 years.
The installation piece is currently touring in the UK.
Tha Girt Vat Pig, by Edward Slow
Edward Slow (1841-1925) was born in Wilton, Wiltshire, and grew up a working class lad. In adulthood he was a wheelwright in the town, and eventually a town councillor and mayor. But he never forgot his roots, and spent many years writing down in the local Wiltshire dialect amusing stories and a working-man's view of events in the area.
Here, he relates the importance to the working-class household economy of the pig, perhaps the most important member of the household. There is a touch of regret at not being able to scratch his back or feed him extry bits, soon overtaken in the joy of seeing the wonderful cuts of meat, and the various meals that can be enjoyed from a grunter.
I have illustrated my reading using a mixture of childhood toys, some grunters at the River Bourne Community Farm, Laverstock, and a grunter and a plate of faggots from the Ginger Piggery, Boyton, near Warminster. Mmm, looks good....(believe me, it was!)

Salisbury
Salisbury (/ˈsɔːlzbri/ SAWLZ-bree, /ˈsɒlzbri/ SOLZ-bree - a cognate of Salzburg, or locally /ˈsɔːzbri/) is a cathedral city in Wiltshire, England, and the only city within the county. It is the second largest settlement in the county by population, between Chippenham at 35,800 and Swindon at 209,156. It has also been called New Sarum /ˌnjuː ˈsɛərəm/ to distinguish it from the original site of settlement to the north of the city at Old Sarum, but this alternative name is not in common use.

Fly Fishing the Hampshire Avon (Vlog 4)
Back end of the main mayfly hatch and the trout are fat, fussy and lazy. Fishing with an old friend in the relaxing setting of idyllic English countryside with a slight hangover on the Rushall Organics beat, downstream of Manningford Trout Fishery and upstream of the legendary Frank Sawyer's old stomping ground. I try to convince him that becoming a vegetarian on ethical grounds should not disrupt his love of fishing...then his waders get a leak. But we catch fish! Best of all - we have a good laugh along the way.
