Visual fish survey of the Arkansas River, Tulsa OK
Few of us fully appreciate the abundance and diversity of the fish assemblages in our prairie rivers and streams. This may be especially true in urban areas where we drive over streams and rivers daily, but often have little idea what's actually living there.
This was recently illustrated when fisheries workers with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation conducted visual fish surveys on the Arkansas River where they observed schools of channel catfish in the tens of thousands, along with big flathead catfish, striped bass, sauger, suckers and other native fish, including shorthead redhorse and shovelnose sturgeon.
Shorthead redhorse and shovelnose sturgeon are both rare and seldom seen species in Oklahoma and are considered species of special concern. The fisheries workers reported that they were blown away by the number and variety of fish they observed in downtown Tulsa. It's amazing that so many fish are living here, literally right in our backyards, and we really had no idea the extent to which this was all going on.
Shovelnose sturgeon are very rare in Oklahoma and their harvest is extremely discouraged, however if you do encounter one of these rare fish please report it to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation at (918) 683-1031.

Cross Ranch State Park Trails
Cross Ranch State Park trails are open year round. In the winter they are groomed for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. You can even rent the equipment at the visitors center if you don't have your own! Trails
Situated along the west bank of the Missouri River, the 589-acre Cross Ranch State Park and adjacent 6,000-acre Cross Ranch Nature Preserve are one of the few areas in North Dakota to offer a true primitive outdoor experience.
Over 16 miles of trail wind through Cross Ranch State Park and Nature Preserve. Trail posts identify the trail names.
Matah Trail Matah River Trail: This 2.9-mile trail begins at the Visitor Center and loops around the park's main use areas. Along the river, interpretive signs describe the history, wildlife and geology of the area. The Matah Trail Self Guided Loop is the innermost loop covering 1.4 miles and takes up to an hour and a half to hike. Self-guided brochures are available at the trailhead or Visitor Center.
Ma-ak-oti Old Villiage Trail: This trail is dvided into two sections. The 2.5 mile Upper Ma-ak-oti Trail starts from the Matah/Ma-ak-oti trail junction and continues to a creek flowing through a wooded ravine. The 1.7-mile Lower Ma-ak-oti Trail begins at the Sanger trailhead and continues north, joining with the upper trail. Looping in parts, both sections of the trail wind through prairie bluffs and wooded channels, offering vistas of the Missouri River. Steep stairs without handrails are present on portions of the trail. Some areas may be muddy or impassable due to seasonal water fluctuations. This trail is open to hiking and snowshoeing. It is not groomed for skiing.
