The traditional 45 minute boat tour on the River Douro at Porto
STUNNING DOURO ESTATE WITHIN UNESCO´S PROTECTION
4 BANGALOWS · 10 ROOMS · 728 SQM BUILT · 18,770 SQM PLOT
This estate of stunning location and views, consists of four houses fully built in shale and natural wood at the core of a sunny valley within the UNESCO´s protected Wine Region of Alto Douro. Its located on the bank of the river Douro, between the villages of Pinhão and Tua. Pinhão is situated on the north bank and it is known for producing the highest quality Ports. The complex includes gardens, olive, fig and chestnut trees. On the west, south and east it has borders by 20 acres of vineyards producing the renewed Quinta de Sao Jose wine. It features 3 semi-detached guesthouses, an independence house, a swimming pool, a private boat dock and a double-robe artesian hole. All combined, the guesthouses offer 10 bedrooms of which 8 are ensuite, a wine shop, office and storage as well as indoors areas planned to harbor wine making facilities or a spa. The property was completely renovated from the ruins in 2013, year from it has been functioning as rural tourism complex, until last year. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 it was recommended and include in the Conde Nast Johansens catalog. All rural tourism licenses are suspended and available to be reactivated. The nearest city is Regua, 30 kms away. It is 1 hour and 50 minutes from the International Airport Francisco de Sa Carneiro, 2 hours to the center of Porto, 150 kms away and 115 kms away from Golf Club of Viseu. The Rabelo boat is a traditional Portuguese cargo boat that for centuries was used to transport people and goods along the Douro river.
Native from the Douro region, it does not exist in any other place of the world. Its history is closely linked to the production and trade of port wine. Before the arrival of the railway, the rabelo was the fastest and the most efficient means of transport between the Douro Valley, where port wine is produced, and the city of Porto, where it was traded and exported world wide.
Although not in use anymore, still today we can admire these graceful vessels belonging to the Port Wine Companies in the banks of the Douro river, in the cities of Porto and Gaia.
Every year on June 24, St. John's Day, is held a race of Rabelo boats, an important and popular event of the festivities of Porto city.

10 Things to do in Porto, Portugal Travel Guide Video Transcript: (OPORTO)
Lisbon is beautiful, but Porto is magical. We arrived in Porto with our taxi driver’s words still ringing in our ears, and we’re happy to say, the city did not disappoint!
Our time in Porto was spent sipping on Port wine, soaking in the views across the Douro River, wandering through the hilly streets, and marvelling at buildings covered in blue tiles.
In this travel guide, we’re going to share a little bit of Porto’s magic with you, and also show you some of the things you too can see, eat, and drink when you visit Porto!
Known as the Chapel of Souls, this church is covered in tiles that represent moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine.
This bookstore is a feast for the eyes. The bookstore was even frequented by JK Rowling when she taught English in Porto, and it’s reported to have been an inspiration in her Harry Potter series.
We continued our walk downhill until we reached the São Bento Train Station.
Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest landmarks in the city with cloisters where the walls are covered in blue tiles.
We reached the neighbourhood of Ribeira, which sits right on the shores of the Douro River. This neighbourhood is lined with many sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants, so it’s a nice place to rest your legs and do a bit of people watching. Feeling hungry we wandered down some of the back streets until we found a small restaurant serving up local specialities.
We made time for one more attraction: the Church of Saint Francis.
The Bridge we had all been waiting for was Dom Luis the first Bridge, which spans the Douro River. The lower deck carries regular traffic with narrow walkways for those on foot, and the upper deck is reserved for pedestrians and the metro lines.
For the best views of Porto, you need to walk the upper deck!
There was only one thing on our minds: visit one of the many wineries that line this side of the river! We ended up walking into Croft for a wine tasting without need for an appointment, and this turned out to be one of our favourite activities in Porto!
Filled to the brim with port wine, cheese and chocolate, we enjoyed a light stroll along the Douro River, watching the boats bob in the water.

How to reach Porto:
1. By Air - Francisco Sa Carneiro airport, around 30 mins by tube from the main city
2. By Bus - 3.5hrs from Lisbon
3. By Train - 2.45hrs from Lisbon to Porto(Sao Bento, Campanha) or Gaia (Devesas)
Moving around:
By foot - the old city near the Douro river (which has most of the popular spots) can be easily covered on foot. Streets are mainly cobbled-stone covered and at 10-15% incline. There are winding lanes going down to the river, or folks can choose to take stone stairs.
By taxi - there are app-based taxi services (Uber and MyTaxi)
By public transport - Good connectivity via tube/metro networks and buses to go to spots a bit removed like the stadium or Jardim do Palacio do Cristal/ Casa Musica. The Porto card + Travelcard option (20EUR - 2days) is good for those wanting to move around on public transport and visit museums/attractions etc. [Some museums are free, some like Clerigos Tower at 50%]
Top attractions:
1. Torre de Clreigos - The Cleric's tower and church is a fine example of baroque architecture. The tower itself is 76m tall and if you have the knees to go up 240 narrow steps, it affords an amazing view of the city from the top. Entrance to tower + exhibition/galleries = 5EUR
2. Livraria Lello - One of the prettiest bookshops in the world, the Livraria Lello is worth visiting to see the iconic red staircase, the stained glass ceiliings and beautiful woodwork which is said to have inspired J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter). Note: 5EUR ticket for access, sold from the counter next door (at the corner), redeemable against any book purchased. Be prepared to jostle!
3. Sé do Porto or Porto Cathedral - the most important religious building in Porto, Se is a national monument and a 12th century baroque/romanesque structure situated on an elevated square which affords striking views across the Douro river. It is connected to the Ribeira via a flight of stone steps going down through colourful murals and quaint houses.
4. Jardim do Palacio de Cristal - The Crystal Palace garden is a delightful park from the 19th century offering stunning views of the river. It has several theme based gardens based on themes (like feelings, roses, aromas etc) and is the perfect spot for a relaxing picnic or for watching the lovely peacocks. The Romantic Museum is within the garden (free with the Porto card).
5. São Bento Railway Station - This beautiful imposing structure in the heart of the old city is a treat for the eyes with its main hall decorated with over 20,000 blue tiles, depicting the history of Portugal. This also serves as one of the major train stations connecting Porto with the world.
6. Dom Luis I Bridge - a walk across the Dom Luis I bridge, a double deck metal arch bridge connecting Porto with Gaia is an experience.
7. Cable Car ride - From the top of Dom Luis bridge (Morro gardens), the cable car provides easy access to the port wineries of Gaia and nice view of the river. Tickets are 6EUR (one way)/ 9EUR (return) and include a free wine tasting at one of the wineries.
8. Quinta Santa Eufemia - Our recommended pit-stop for some wine tastings in Gaia, this winery has a relaxed atmosphere, an interesting self guided tour through the history and types of Port wines and good array of tastings (with nibbles). Tastings are at 5EUR each and include a free promo scarf (June 2019)!
9. Douro River-cruise - recommended to watch the sunset, enjoy the spectacular view of the hills around the city, take in the 4 iconic bridges across the river (one of which was made by Gustovo Eiffel). Tickets are 15EUR per person and it can get chilly on the water!
10. We checked out the Mercado Municipal de Beira-Rio in Gaia, and it was buzzing with great food and drink options!
What to eat/drink: Seafood is an important part of the local cuisine, and local delicacies include raw shrimps (gambas naturale) with lemon, cod cakes (bacalhau), grilled octopus with rice. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options too including Sopa do verdure/legume y pao - soups of vegetables/lentils with freshly baked bread. The city is also know for its pastries and confectionery, the crowd favourite being the pastel de nata. Local draft beers are inexpensive (1-1.5 EUR) and a variety of wines from Porto.
Where to eat/ drink: There are lots of restaurants and tavernas most of which are open only for lunch (12-3pm) and dinner (6-10pm). Our picks are:
1. Concept 31 for dinner/ lunch
2. Tapabento (tucked behind the Sao Bento station) for wines, sangrias and tapas
3. Manteigaria (in Bolhao or near Clerigos) for natas and other pastries + a quick coffee
4. Cafe Perreira for late night food and drinks
5. Visit one of the markets (in Porto or Gaia)
If you are carrying your own water bottle (like us!), there are many fountains across the city where you can refill - including the famous Fountain of Eternal Youth in the Liberdade square!
Last but not least - a lovely little souvenir to send home - a postcard made of cork!
FULL Day of Travel. From Portugal to Spain.
Traveling with 6 people is quite the challenge. Especially when you can only get taxis for 5! This is what it is like on one of our travel days. We only travelled from Portugal to Spain. But in order to get where we were going, it took most of the day!
