The Ardèche (Occitan: Ardecha) is a 125-kilometre (78 mi) long river in south-central France, a right-bank tributary of the River Rhône. Its source is in the Massif Central, near the village of Astet. It flows into the Rhône near Pont-Saint-Esprit, north-west of Orange. The river gives its name to the French department of Ardèche.
The valley of the Ardèche is very scenic, in particular a 30-kilometre (19 mi) section known as the Ardèche Gorges. The walls of the river here are limestone cliffs up to 300 metres (980 ft) high. A kayak and camping trip down the gorge is not technically difficult and is very popular in the summer. The most famous feature is a natural 60-metre (200 ft) stone arch spanning the river known as the Pont d'Arc (arch bridge).

Gorges de l'Ardèche - The Gorges de l’Ardèche (Ardèche Gorge) is located between the villages of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. The road along the north rim of the gorge (the Corniche) has views into the gorge and over the river.
Pont d'Arc (arched bridge) - A natural stone bridge across the river near the town of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc forms the natural to the Gorges de l'Ardèche.
Chauvet Cave - This limestone cave, which is named after its discoverer, is in the Gorges de l'Ardèche. It contains early Stone Age cave paintings of great variety and expressiveness. Since the cave is not open to the public, photographs of cave paintings are displayed in an exhibition in Vallon-Pont d'Arc.

Vallon-Pont-d'Arc is a most lovely area in the Ardèche department of France. The arch or arc formation, named the Pont d'Arc, under which the Ardèche river flows makes the scenery just breathtaking. It has made the prestigious list of one of the Great Sites of France. The Pont d'Arc is about 30 some meters high and was formed naturally, making it all the more a wonder of nature, or better said of God.

We stayed in a nice, cozy hotel, just a small walk on the narrow road to the arch called Hotel le Belvedere. Hotel le Belvedere also has a great kitchen and a nice swimming pool. See:
We stopped here at Vallon-Pont-d'Arc just for a night on our way further south in France, but now I know this is a place and an area, les gorges de l'Ardèche, to come back to.

Le Raid Nature du Pont d'Arc 2011 a eu lieu les 24 et 25 avril.
Comme lors des années précédentes, 2 parcours différents ont été élaborés. Le crédit revient à l'Association Raid Nature du Pont d'Arc, à une équipe de 200 bénévoles, aux 40 pompiers, aux 10 gendarmes, aux 6 plongeurs du SAV (sauveteurs en eaux vives) et et 8 membres du GRIMP 07 (Groupement d'Intervention en Milieu Périlleux) qui ont été mobilisés pour le bon déroulement de l'épreuve.
La convivialité des tous les acteurs y est remarquable
Depuis 2005, les parcours sont présentés aux institutions départementales (DDAF, ONF, FRAPNA, CORA) pour validation, afin de préserver les sites naturels que les concurrents traversent.
Rappel de la manifestation :
•Samedi 23 avril : le kid Raid 07 : 100 équipes composées d'un adulte et d'un enfant (de 10 à 16 ans) s'affrontent amicalement lors d'ateliers sportifs (course d'orientation, randonnée, lancé au propulseur préhistorique, maniabilité VTT, tir à l'arc, parcours tyrolienne) et lors d'ateliers pédagogiques (questionnaires sur l'environnement et sur la préhistoire).
•Dimanche 24 avril : Raid Nature : 500 équipes composées de 2 adultes font leur raid ; 2 parcours proposés : le découverte (49km) et l'aventure (67km). Au programme : course à pied, canoë, VTT, randonnée sportive en milieu varié (et marmittoning uniquement sur le parcours aventure).
Les 2 parcours sont arrivés au cœur de Vallon Pont d'Arc au cours de l'après-midi. La remise des prix suivi d'un vin d'honneur offert par la municipalité à été effectuée à la salle omnisports de Vallon le soir.

C’EST LE PARADIS DU CANOË
Si vous ne devez faire du canoë qu’une seule fois dans votre vie, eh bien c’est ici ! Dans les Gorges de l’Ardèche ! Plus qu’une activité sportive, le canoë en Ardèche, c’est une véritable expérience nature. Un vrai retour à l’essentiel. Une parenthèse hors du temps au coeur d’une nature grandiose.
La réputation des Gorges de l'Ardèche tient surtout à son cours d'eau. Relativement calme pendant toute la période du printemps et de l'été, parsemé de quelques rapides dignes d'intérêt, il est un lieu de loisirs affectionné des amateurs de canoë et de kayak comme des randonneurs. Plus de 100 000 personnes passent chaque année sous le Pont d’Arc, hormis celles utilisant leur propre embarcation.
La descente se fait dans la journée, accompagnée ou non d'un moniteur, entre Vallon-Pont-d'Arc ou Chames et Sauze à Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. Elle peut se faire en deux jours avec une nuitée en bivouacs (à Gaud et Gournier - le camping sauvage est interdit dans les gorges).

En période de crue (principalement lors de certaines pluies « cévenoles » d'automne), la descente est évidemment interdite par arrêté préfectoral. Ces crues sont rares mais peuvent être extrêmement violentes. L'Ardèche dans ses gorges peut passer en quelques heures d'un débit de quelques mètres cubes à plus de 7 000 mètres cubes par seconde sans aucune possibilité de régulation par les quelques petites retenues artificielles du bassin versant (Chassezac, Fontaulière). Les crues sont spectaculaires d'impétuosité : autant « admirer » alors impunément le spectacle depuis la route touristique...

If you only have to do canoeing once in your life, well it's here! In the Gorges de l'Ardèche! More than a sporting activity, canoeing in Ardèche is a real nature experience. A real return to the essential. A parenthesis out of time in the heart of a grandiose nature.
The reputation of the Gorges de l'Ardèche is mainly due to its stream. Relatively quiet throughout the spring and summer, dotted with a few rapids of interest, it is a place of recreation for lovers of canoeing and kayaking as hikers. More than 100,000 people pass each year under the Pont d'Arc, except those using their own boat.
The descent is done during the day, accompanied or not by a monitor, between Vallon-Pont-d'Arc or Chames and Sauze in Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. It can be done in two days with a night in bivouacs (Gaud and Gournier - the wild camping is prohibited in the gorges).

During floods (mainly during some Cévenoles autumn rains), the descent is obviously prohibited by prefectural decree. These floods are rare but can be extremely violent. The Ardèche in its gorges can pass in a few hours from a flow of a few cubic meters to more than 7000 cubic meters per second without any possibility of regulation by the few small artificial reservoirs of the watershed (Chassezac, Fontaulière). Nous avons pris une semaine de vacances a Vallon-Pont-d'Arc en Ardèche du 6 au 13 août ! Rejoint par des amis dans un camping nous avons surtout picolés, pris le soleil, fait la fête et visité des endroits tels que Balazuc, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, les grottes Chauvet, La Roque-sur-Cèze, les cascades du Sautadet ! Nous avons aussi fait du canoë dans les gorges de l'Ardèche ... tout une aventure ... =)

Thank you for watching our Vlog this is the most incredible place we have been to, it was the one place we were actually aiming to find whilst on our adventure in France and we DID!
we Kayak'd all the way down and had to walk with Kayak in Tow all the way back up, there were some sad moments like the passing of my poor Slides as i kept falling over however it was well worth it with the views we managed to see...
