Jacksonville is the largest city in the U.S. state of Florida by population and the largest city by area in the contiguous United States. It is the county seat of Duval County, with which the city government consolidated in 1968. Consolidation gave Jacksonville its great size and placed most of its metropolitan population within the city limits; with an estimated population in 2012 of 836,507, it is the most populous city proper in Florida and the Southeast, and the twelfth most populous in the United States. Jacksonville is the principal city in the Jacksonville metropolitan area, with a population of 1,345,596 in 2010.
Jacksonville is in the First Coast region of northeast Florida and is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia state line and about 340 miles (550 km) north of Miami. The Jacksonville Beaches communities are along the adjacent Atlantic coast. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, and in 1564 was the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. Under British rule, settlement grew at the narrow point in the river where cattle crossed, known as Wacca Pilatka to the Seminole and Cowford to the British. A platted town was established there in 1822, a year after the United States gained Florida from Spain; it was named after Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and seventh President of the United States.
Harbor improvements since the late 19th century have made Jacksonville a major military and civilian deep-water port. Its riverine location facilitates two U.S. Navy bases and the Port of Jacksonville, Florida's third largest seaport. Significant factors in the local economy include services such as banking, insurance, healthcare and logistics. As with much of Florida, tourism is also important to the Jacksonville area, particularly tourism related to golf. In 2010, Jacksonville was listed as a high sufficiency world city in the World Cities Study Group's inventory, ranking alongside cities such as Liverpool and Las Vegas. People from Jacksonville are known as Jacksonvillians or Jaxons.
There are more than 500 neighborhoods within Jacksonville's vast area. These include Downtown Jacksonville and its surrounding neighborhoods, including LaVilla, Brooklyn, Riverside and Avondale, Springfield, Eastside, and San Marco. Additionally, greater Jacksonville is traditionally divided into several amorphous areas, comprising large parts of Duval County. These are Northside, Westside, Southside, and Arlington, as well as the Jacksonville Beaches.
There are four municipalities that have retained their own governments since consolidation; these are Baldwin and the three Jacksonville Beaches towns of Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach. Four of Jacksonville's neighborhoods, Avondale, Ortega, Springfield, and Riverside, have been identified as U.S. historic districts and are in the National Register of Historic Places.

Jacksonville is the largest city in the U.S. state of Florida and the county seat of Duval County. The governments of the City of Jacksonville and Duval County consolidated in 1968, expanding Jacksonville's city limits and making it the largest city in land area continental United States. Consequently most of Jacksonville's metropolitan population lives within its city limits, and it is the most populous city proper in Florida and the thirteenth most populous in the United States. Jacksonville is the principal city in the Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan Area, a region with a population of more than 1,313,228.
Jacksonville is located in the First Coast region of northeast Florida and is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia border and about 340 miles (547 km) north of Miami. The Jacksonville Beaches communities are located along the adjacent Atlantic coast. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, and in 1564 was the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. During Florida's British period a community grew at the narrow point in the river where cattle crossed, known as Wacca Pilatka to the Indians and Cowford to the British. The town was incorporated in 1822, a year after the United States acquired the colony of Florida from Spain, and renamed after Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and seventh President of the United States.
Harbor improvements since the late 19th century have made Jacksonville a major military and civilian deep-water port. Its riverine location facilitates two U.S. Navy bases and the Port of Jacksonville, Florida's third largest seaport. Significant factors in the local economy include services such as banking, insurance, and healthcare; as with much of Florida tourism is also important to the Jacksonville area, in particular tourism related to golf.
Downtown Jacksonville has a skyline with the tallest building being the Bank of America Tower, constructed in 1990 as the Barnett Bank Center. It has a height of 617 ft (188 m) and includes 42 floors. Other notable structures include the 37-story Modis Building (with its distinctive flared base making it the defining building in the Jacksonville skyline), originally built in 1972-74 by the Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company, and the 28 floor Riverplace Tower which, when completed in 1967, was the tallest precast, post-tensioned concrete structure in the world.
There are more than 500 neighborhoods within Jacksonville's vast area. The city of Jacksonville divides its territory into six planning districts, each containing a number of neighborhoods and developments, with borders defined by a set of major roads and rivers that run through the city: the Urban Core, Greater Arlington, Southeast Jacksonville, Southwest Jacksonville, Northwest Jacksonville, and North Jacksonville.
The Urban Core includes Jacksonville's traditional downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods of LaVilla, Springfield, East Jacksonville, Fairfield, and Brooklyn, plus a section on the south side of the St. Johns River known as Southbank. Greater Arlington is centered on the area known as Arlington, located east and south of the river. Southeast Jacksonville, located south of Arlington and the St. Johns, includes most of the area typically known as Southside. The Southwest and Northwest districts together comprise the area known as West Jacksonville or Westside. These districts contain neighborhoods west of downtown and the river, as well the large tract of mostly rural land further inland. North Jacksonville or Northside includes some residential neighborhoods north of Downtown and the large, sparsely populated area to the north of the St. Johns.
Notable neighborhoods in Jacksonville include Downtown, LaVilla, San Marco, Mandarin, and Arlington. Four neighborhoods, Avondale, Ortega, Springfield, and Riverside, have been identified as U.S. historic districts and are in the National Register of Historic Places. Some neighborhoods were originally towns or communities prior to being annexed by the city. Additionally, Baldwin, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach retain their own municipal governments though they are represented in the Jacksonville City Council. Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach are collectively known as the Jacksonville Beaches.
The Casa Marina Hotel Jacksonville Beach Florida
The Casa Marina Hotel. Jacksonville Beach Florida.
The Casa Marina Hotel in Jacksonville Beach, Florida is where timeless charm meets modern-day beauty. This destination brings out emotions of serenity and luxury making The Casa Marina Hotel the perfect couples getaway. It would be difficult to imagine wanting to stay anywhere else in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
From the moment you step through the large ornate glass and wooden doors, you are invited to experience true Jacksonville Beach culture. It becomes immediately obvious that you have entered a hotel from a different era. Meticulous accents, hardwood floors, historic pictures aligning the walls of a time gone by and splendid amenities that bring you to present day luxuries. The Casa Marina Hotel brings up the emotion that you have arrived at a very special place. The Casa Marine Hotel is not your average boutique hotel. It is the character of this place that makes it shine above all the rest. Twenty three rooms are available for guests who appreciate an intimate unforgettable Jacksonville Beach experience.
Steve and I were fortunate enough to have been assigned room 201, which is an alluring parlor suite. Two distinct rooms allow you to have a comfortable temporary living space with an abundance of room. A cozy queen size master bed with crisp white linens and a large armoire that stays true to the historic elegance will become your sanctuary . Antique style ceiling fans and hardwood floors add to the charm of this space. The most spectacular feature of this suite is by far the view from the bedroom window. Being on the second floor gives you a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the picturesque beach below. Inspiring, romantic and enchanting are words that come to mind when describing the view from The Casa Marina Hotel. One truly unique feature of this hotel is the view from the outside stairwell on the second floor. Steve and I stood in awe looking up at the Spanish style architecture, featuring a white archway overlooking the ocean beneath us. I told Steve that I had an overwhelming feeling that I had been in this place before, even though this was our first trip to The Casa Marina Hotel. The way the sunlight pierced through the arches opening allowed for a beautiful view of the ocean and white sand beaches below. This site is one that should not be missed and is a sensational place for photography.
