Maritime Pacific Brewery in Ballard, Seattle WA
This is a short from the series Tales from the Taproom, a production of the Washington Beer Commission.
The Washington Beer Commission is the first of its kind commodity commission in the United States, was formed in 2006, when the Washington State Legislature authorized the creation of the Beer Commission to promote the state's microbreweries.
Washington's breweries, many of them small and family owned, are integral parts of their local communities. When you choose to buy beer brewed in Washington, you support businesses that in turn contribute generously to charitable organizations that support a host of worthy projects in all corners of the state.
Simply put, Washington produces some of the finest beer in the country and our new Beer Commission will help spread the word about these wonderful products. Our microbrews emphasize quality and flavor, and are a signature product of the Evergreen State. And our renowned hops, barley and wheat are the perfect premium ingredients for the nation's best craft brewers.
Join the community of Washington Beer Lovers, in celebrating FRESH, LOCAL, AWARD-WINNING craft beer produced in our state.

Oregon: A Craft Beer Road Trip
Oregon is a mecca for craft beer lovers (like yours truly) but what’s the best way to experience it all? An Oregon craft beer road trip! Our Oregon road trip included stops at some of the Pacific Northwest’s most delicious breweries including De Garde Brewing, Sedition Brewing Company, Hair of the Dog and at least a dozen more. We also hit up some of Oregon’s most beautiful scenery like Multnomah Falls and Smith Rock State Park, and – last but by no means least – we had a sloth encounter at Oregon’s Sloth Center, which was a dream come true. We fed, pet and played with sloths. Hello, heaven.
To get a full run-down of this epic Oregon craft beer road trip, check out my detailed post over on the blog:

10 Things to Do (and Eat) on Long Beach Peninsula
Sometimes when you travel, you just want a chill retreat, am I right? No hordes of tourists, no Ripley’s Believe it or Not, no overpriced Segway tours…Just some time on the beach, a good book, and a little nature to make you feel alive again. Well Long Beach Peninsula is the place to be.
But before we offer suggestions for what to do and where to eat (obviously), make sure to hit subscribe and ring the bell so you don’t miss any future adventures.
First off, book yourself a stay at Adrift Hotel: Because a lot of hotels claim to be green, but Adrift actually is. Much of the modern decor is made from recycled wood, they use solar to power most of their basic electricity needs, utilize rainwater collection, and use non-toxic biodegradable cleaning products. Plus, they have recycle bins in all of the rooms (!), they offer free bikes for guests to borrow, and there's a free coffee and tea bar with a few vegan snacks available for purchase. Pets are even welcome!
Next, Take a walk the Discovery Trail: It’s 8.5 miles long and runs alongside the beach most of the way. It stretches all the way to Cape Disappointment State Park (which is the best name for a state park ever!) and North Head Lighthouse.
Maybe you don't think you care to learn about cranberries, but how do you know until you do? The Cranberry Museum is open year-round and you can learn about the history and process of cranberry farming and then stock up on all the cranberry paraphernalia (including actual cranberries) in the gift shop. It's not a big museum and it's free, so it's worth a stop. Then, if you happen to be in town during the first two weekends of October or thereabouts, ask who's harvesting. If you're lucky, you'll be directed to one of the many cranberry bogs on Long Beach Peninsula where you can marvel at the harvesting operation.
Beaches, hiking trails, lighthouses, viewpoints...it's all at Cape Disappointment State Park. You'll need a Discover Pass, which costs $11.50 for a day pass or $35 for the year, but it's good for all the state parks in Washington (including nearby Fort Columbia and Leadbetter Point State Parks), so explore away.
Locals love the wide beach along the peninsula. You'll find them meandering at all hours of the day and night, but they seem to especially love taking in the sunrise. Personally, I only watch the sunrise when I've accidentally booked a 6 am flight, but you do you. I'm more of a bring-a-book-and-bask-in-the-sun kind of beachgoer, myself.
When it’s time to nosh, you’ve got a couple of options for vegan fare.
At the Shelburne Restaurant & Pub we were impressed to find at least three vegan items on the menu, all marked clearly. It's a rare thing to find tasty vegan nachos with vegan queso at a conventional restaurant, but the chef clearly knows what's up.
The Pickled Fish at Adrift Hotel doesn’t have much in the way of vegan options listed on their brekky, lunch or dinner menu, but a quick inquiry proved that the restaurant knew their way around a vegan dish and the kitchen was more than happy to accommodate. Doesn’t hurt to ask!
On a sunny day, order at the window of Roots and take your goods to go or sit on the patio in front of the little juice shack and enjoy the sunshine. Smoothies and acai bowls are plentiful and diverse.
If spirits are your thing, stop by Adrift Distillers for a tasting or a bottle. You can do single tastings for $1 each and learn all about their process and grab a bottle of cranberry liqueur made from local cranberries! There's also gin, vodka and white whiskey and since it’s right next door to Adrift Hotel, you don’t even have to call an Uber if you go a little overboard on the booze.
North Jetty Brewing is The one and only brewery on Long Beach Peninsula. Get a flight to sample a whole handful of their offerings or fill a growler and take it to go.
Enough to get you started? Have your own favorite things to do in Long Beach? Share them in the comments below! Wander on!

Boston Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go
Everything YOU need to know before you travel to Boston Massachusetts in the USA. Boston is the hub of New England, in the Northeast of the United States. Visiting Boston is like a history class in person. Boston is the cradle of much of the US’s history including playing a significant role in the American Revolution, having the first public library in the US, and the first lighthouse. Boston is a city of Neighborhoods, with 23 distinct neighborhoods. Boston has lots of Parks -- public green space is 17 percent of the city. You are never more than a half mile from a park. Boston is very compact.. Downtown Boston is roughly 2 square miles. About 13% of Boston citizens commute by foot, giving it the highest percentage of pedestrian commuters in major cities of the United States.
2 - Top Attractions
Freedom trail
A red-brick path connecting the most famous sites. 2.5 miles long.
16 of Boston’s most historic sites including:
Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Paul Revere House and Old North Church.
North End
The end of the Freedom Trail, and home to Boston’s Little Italy district.
Make sure to get a cannoli from Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry.
Boston Common was declared America’s first public park in 1634
Right next to it is the Boston Public Garden, America’s first Botanic Garden
JFK Presidential Library
All about the life of the US’s 35th president… a bit of the beaten path, but worth it for history buffs.
Beacon Hill
Known as Boston’s most “beautiful” neighborhood
Known for its charming, narrow cobblestone streets, federal style row houses and gaslit streetlamps. It’s also considered to be one of Boston’s most desirable and expensive residential areas in the city
Fenway Park
Home to the Boston Red Sox, built in 1912, it’s the Oldest Major League Baseball Stadium still in use.
3 - Food
Quincy Market
great gathering spot and place for lunch, with over 35 stands offering a wide food selection.
Seafood
Scrod - Catch of the day
Chowders, Lobster Rolls
Italian Food
Dunkin Donuts started here.. And yes, there’s one on every corner.
Beer: Visit the Sam Adams Brewery opened in 1984. Tours are free.. And with free beer tasting!
There’s **NO HAPPY HOUR**
Boston has banned after work drink specials. Time-of-day deals are limited to food. So you’ll find cheap food options from 4pm-6pm, but not alcohol.
4 - Getting In
You’ll likely be flying in to Boston Logan International Airport, which is just a short 3 miles away from Boston. 40 airlines that serve Boston, and 3 hotels onsite
You can also take the Blue Line Subway, but you have to take the Massport shuttle bus to get to the Subway stop.
Bus: Silver Line SL1 will take you in to the city along the waterfront to South Station -- it’s free for passengers arriving at the airpor
5 - Getting Around
Getting around Boston is like navigating a maze
6 - When to go
Summer is peak tourist season (June-August)
But locals recommend Fall, September & October. The leaves are changing color, and the weather is much more pleasant.
Winter is cold! And long! With lots of snow! You’ve been warned!
Spring often has lots of rain.
Biggest Holidays are St Patrick’s Day and the Boston Marathon
Re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party every year on DECEMBER 16
7 - Language
English.. But the Boston accent is pretty thick, and there’s some interesting local slang
Not everyone has the Boston Accent… but you’ll definitely hear it
8 - Wicked Wifi
I mentioned Wifi means good… Wicked Wifi is the cities metropolitan wifi network. The SSID is “WickedFreeWifi”
9 - Hotels
Boston is old, and so are the hotels and AirBNBs. If you are expecting an elevator and A/C, call to check in advance.
10 - Universities
More than 20 colleges in Boston alone… and Harvard, and MIT which are technically not in Boston, but in Cambridge across the river.
140,000 college students call Boston home.
Makes for lots of cheap eats, and nightlife options.

Brewbound's Brew Talks Seattle - Promoting the Culture of Craft - 2013
Full article can be found here:
When Brew Talks finished the long trip from Los Angeles up to the Pacific Northwest stops, in Seattle and Portland, we found two established craft beer cultures, albeit cultures with very different takes on the role craft should play as a civic institution.
In Seattle, which is the subject of today's Brew Talks video (above), it became apparent that, despite the maturity of the craft industry, it has yet to become an outwardly-directed calling card for the city.
I would define Seattle as a city indifferent towards craft beer, said Joel Vandenbrink, the founder of Two Beers Brewing, which hosted the event. They don't lean one way against and they don't really do too much for craft beer.
Vandenbrink joined Ryan Hilliard, the co-founder of Hilliard's Beer, and Kendall Jones, the founder of the Washington Beer Blog, in a discussion about the cultural and civic institutions that help promote a craft beer culture in Seattle.
Jones passionately explained that Seattle is commonly viewed as a very progressive city, but that it's regressive in many ways outsiders don't consider.
This is the problem in Seattle -- we are known for the Space Needle, he said. There are people in this town that resent the fact that we are known for the Seahawks or the Mariners. There are people who don't want Seattle known for anything.
Perhaps an indicator of Jones' sentiment is the recent attempt by state officials to raise excise tax rates on small brewers.
While the state of Washington was trying to quadruple our excise tax to the highest in the nation, our neighbors down south [in Oregon] passed a little bill that elected yeast as the state microbe, said Hilliard. Does that give you a perspective on the different states and how they recognize craft brewers? I think that sums it up right there.
That isn't to say that Vandenbrink and other local craft brewers aren't actively pursuing change.
I have some template letters that I give my regulars, that I have written or one of my guys has written and I mail those to legislators, he said. There are certainly laws that I want changed.
One of those laws Vandenbrink helped to change was his ability to pour other Washington-made craft beers over his own taproom bar. Now, he's advocating for similar changes that would give him the ability to sell Washington-made cider products as well.
But in order for Washington craft breweries to effect regulatory change, they'll need more of an organized effort.
Breweries could do better to band together and talk to our legislators and do it from the top down, said Hilliard.

The Red Hot Has Beef with Bad Hot Dogs
The Red Hot in Tacoma, WA - RITR Field Portrait #3
The Red Hot is a tap room in Tacoma, WA best known for its spectacular variety.
Connoisseurs of beer and hot dogs, The Red Hot offers dozens of creative takes on the class dog, and their beer list is an ever-changing selection of 30+ taps.
Breweries from all over the United States are represented on the Red Hot blackboard. Each time a tap expires, its entry on the blackboard is erased, the line is cleaned, and a new variety of beer takes its place.
To keep track of their wide selection of beers, The Red Hot started using Rite in the Rain notecards as ID tags for each keg. The crew writes the ABV, IBU count, name, location of origin, customer remarks, taste profile, and other details on each index card. When a keg is tapped, they bring that card up front as a reference for the bartenders.
It's a fascinating system, and one that you should definitely see in person. Stop by the Red Hot at 2914 6th Ave, Tacoma, WA 98406.
