All Along the Roaring Fork (Colorado SH 82, El Jebel to Aspen)
Day #1 of the 12-12-5 tour continues along eastbound Colorado SH 82. There is a good reason that Co 82 is my favorite State Highway. Another (lesser known) engineering marvel awaits on the journey.
Glenwood Springs - Long Live the Kings
The Glenwood Springs Chinook program, located on Orcas Island in Washington State, began as an experiment. In 1978, LLTK founder Jim Youngren wanted to see if he could create a Chinook run from a small stream on his property. Nearly 40 years later, up to 4,000 Chinook return annually to be harvested in fisheries from Alaska to Northern Puget Sound. These Chinook help nourish our local population of endangered orca whales. And because few, if any, of our Chinook stray to mainland rivers, wild populations are protected from the negative effects of interbreeding with hatchery fish.
Every year, we release 750,000 juvenile Chinook from Glenwood Springs Hatchery—an amazing feat, given how little water is used. This success is due in large part to an expansive network of natural rearing ponds, and to reliable sources of cold spring water that keeps our fish healthy.
Glenwood Springs Hatchery is a true community effort. About 20 people volunteer annually to spawn the large Chinook that return, mark juveniles to be identified as hatchery origin in fisheries, and help maintain the facility. We also receive substantial operations and funding support from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife—our lead project partner—as well as generous members of the local community.
We are pleased to welcome more than five hundred tourists, students, and campers to the hatchery every year. Our facility manager conducts guided tours, teaching visitors about the critical role of salmon in our region, the status of wild fish, and the ongoing efforts of Long Live the Kings to recover wild salmon and promote sustainable fisheries.
Over the years, the Glenwood Springs Chinook program has shown us that we still have much to learn about the many factors affecting the survival of juvenile salmon as they migrate through Puget Sound to the Pacific Ocean. This was the inspiration for our Salish Sea Marine Survival Project (Marinesurvivalproject.com).

Glenwood Springs | Idaho Springs | Georgetown Loop Railroad
Glenwood Springs | Idaho Springs | Georgetown Loop Railroad
Glenwood Springs, a city with a total area of less than 5 square miles, is a further 2 hours east towards Denver along the I-70 and about 150 miles west of Denver.
Three and a half million gallons a day at a constant temperature of 120 degrees pour from the natural hot springs which are the largest natural hot springs in the world.
The hot spring pools are the big attraction here, one measuring 400 feet by 100 feet with water of 90 degrees, and a smaller therapy pool with water of 104 degrees.
The Iron Mountain Tramway carries visitors up the mountain for a tour of the caverns, hike along the half mile long Panoramic Trail for fantastic views over the Rockies and the Colorado River, pan for gemstones at Discovery Rock or try horse riding on a one hour trail through roaring Fork Valley.
The Colorado Wranglers offer a family friendly show, which include a chuck wagon supper and a western musical comedy show at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs.
White water rafting and fly fishing are just two of the many activities on offer in Glenwood Springs.
Georgetown Loop Railroad is still further east past the ski resorts of Vail and Aspen, and offers tourists a scenic and historic train ride around the mountains. Steam driven engines and old fashioned carriages add to the thrill.
The beauty of the rugged Rocky Mountains surrounds you as an old-time steam locomotive or a powerful diesel locomotives winds up the Clear Creek canyon, hauling your train past the remains of several gold and silver mines. Both fully enclosed and open cars give a breath taking view of everything along the line.
Board from the Silver Plume Depot or Devils Gate Station in Georgetown.
There is a full program of activities to choose from throughout the year, such as 4th July Fireworks train, Moonlight in the mountains Dinner Train, Wine Tasting Train, Pumpkin Festival Train and Santas Polar Adventure Trains.
There is a lovely tourist information store in Georgetown.
Idaho Springs is the birthplace of the Rocky Mountain gold rush 33 miles west of Denver, visit the gold mine to pan for gold and visit the gold-mining museum.
In nearby Miner Street, walk along the wooden sidewalks and visit the quaint shops for souvenirs, see the preserved steam train with carriages, or cross under the I-70 to visit the large waterwheel with tumbling cataracts.
South of town, drive the highest paved road in North America and head to the top of Mount Evans, one of Colorado's tallest mountains. The road starts off at 8,700 feet, rising to 14,240 feet at the summit. The temperature cools accordingly, if its 90 in Denver it will be more like 40 degrees at the top of Mount Evans.
Idaho Springs is also near Golden Gate State Park with stunning views of the continental divide, and within an hour's drive of six of the state's most famous ski resorts.
Dozens of other recreation spots are also near these 12,000 acres of dense forest, rocky peaks, and aspen-rimmed meadows laced with miles of trails awaiting the hiker, horseback rider, mountain biker and winter sports enthusiast.
Camp with electrical hook-ups and tent-sites in two different campgrounds, stocked fishing ponds, picnic sites and the Panorama Point Scenic Overlook where visitors can see 100 miles of the Continental Divide. In winter, visitors can go cross-county skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, ice fishing and ice skating.

Nude climbing sculpture in downtown Silt, Colorado
Silt, Colorado is located about 280 kilometres (175 miles) west of Denver, Colorado along Interstate 70 on the west side of the Continental divide. There is no other town in the United States named Silt! This town got its name from a warning along railroad tracks that there was silt ahead! Later a town grew up in that same spot and needed a name...
Anyway, I drive by Silt on an average of about a dozen times each year, only occasionally stopping for a break or refreshment.
During the summer of 2009 Silt made national news for the unique climbing sculpture in the middle of the town roundabout. That sculpture prominently displays the naked bottom of a climber scaling a cliff - as you can plainly see in this video. After the national commotion died-down I stopped in town to see for myself and record this video.
From my point of view (so to speak!) the sculpture doesn't seem like a big deal but I hear people still hang trousers on the climber now and again! Oh, yes, my car did start out in the wrong gear in this video - it's hard to shift, drive, and video record all at the same time!
Here's my Strange page that has a still photograph of this same sculpture:
