The Rock House Reservation
What makes Rock House Reservation a special place?
Built by the glacier and blessed by indigenous tribes who hunted and worshiped here, the cave-like shelter and its surroundings are an intriguing blend of geologic and human history. Nature lovers can enjoy expanses of wildflowers, hardwood forests and pine groves, while watching for a wide variety of animals, from wild turkeys to painted turtles.
The centerpiece of the property, understandably, is the massive, 20- to 30-foot-high rock enclosure that stands guard over man-made Carter Pond. But visitors who choose to explore the 196-acre tract will find there’s plenty more to sample from this multi-faceted greenspace. Like much of central Massachusetts, the history of Rock House Reservation is that of forests transformed into farmlands, ponds and streams turned into mill power, and now all reverting to their natural states.
Over the thousands of years the glacier pushed, pulled, and scraped over the New England landscape, myriad land formations, such as the Rock House, were created. But the movement of the ice sheet also left behind boulders in the most improbable places. A striking example of these “erratics” is Balance Rock, which perches atop a large stone outcrop.
Rock House’s mammoth proportions and southern exposure made it an excellent winter camp for Native Americans. Its location near two long Native American footpaths suggests that it may also have been a trail camp and meeting place.
In the mid-17th century, colonists cleared the forests of West Brookfield for farming. In 1866, pastures around the Rock House were added to a 281-acre farm on Ragged Hill Road owned by William Adams, whose family would tend the land for more than 125 years.
During the first two decades of the 20th century, the Rock House was a popular stop on the “Copper Line,” an electric trolley that ran between West Brookfield and Ware. Visitors came to picnic in the abandoned pastures and explore this historic Native American landmark.

Eyrie House - Mount Nonotuck - Mount Tom Reservation
Today's adventure brought us to the Mount Tom Reservation in Holyoke, Ma, to see the remains of the Eyrie House Ruins on Mount Nonotuck. The summit house was the dream of William Street. He built the summit hotel in 1861 and ran it until it burnt down in 1901. The state then took his land under eminent domain for $5000. William Street never accepted or cashed the check. We got a couple geocaches too.

The sign at King Philip's cave reads:
Historic Site
King Philip's Cave
The Native American Sachem, Metacomet of Pokonoket, called King Philip by the English, Sachem or chief of the Wampanoag people is reported to have used this area as a stopping place. It provided a natural fortress for his many visits to the settlements of Plimoth and Taunton, both part of the Plimoth Colony. Numerous Native American villages ave been discovered along Winnecunnet Pond, which were then visible from this natural great hill, as was the Old Bay Path, and all of the surrounding countryside.
During King Philip's War (1675 - 1677) after a raid and burning of the settlement of Taunton in June 1675, and nearby homestead of Sgt. William Wetherell, Philip and his Warriors are believed to have taken refuge here as they withdrew in advance of Militia from Plimoth & Taunton under the command of Captain Benjamin Church.
King Philip's Cave is a natural stone formation created by the advanced and withdrawal of ice sheets during the last ice age about 13,500 years ago. These glaciers were over a mile thick, an hundreds of miles wide. They carried tons of soil and rock which they deposited throughout this area. The large stones and boulders that form King Philip's Cave are called conglomerate or pudding stone. These stones are glacial erratics left behind as the ice sheets melted and retreated.
King Philip's Cave is preserved by the Land Preservation Society of Norton for the education and enjoyment of visitors.
Please do not climb on the rocks.

Four Minutes at Indian Rockhouse on the Big South Fork in Tennessee
Over four minutes of quiet forest video filmed on a static tripod at the ancient Native American rock shelter site known as the Indian Rockhouse. The forest is so motionless, this almost looks like a still photo, but it's video. You may see an occasional falling leaf or flying insect.
Archaeologists have determined that this site was used as a shelter over a period of thousands of years. This is one of a cluster of great sites on or near Pickett State Park on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee.
