Rockingham County: A Real Wakeup Call
Communities across America are taking action to build a culture of health. Rockingham County, North Carolina, went from a wealthy county to a poor one very quickly after losing two major industries only a couple of decades ago. The population of about 90,000 suffers from high smoking rates, high obesity rates and high rates of smoking during pregnancy. When the 2010 County Health Rankings were released, the community's poor standing served as a wake-up call, and only a few years later the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust became involved and the county started to expand the conversation, looking at health as more than simply health care access.
Innovative community programs include the Virtual Farmer's Market, which gives local farmers a new market for their products while also providing them with an education on how to reach out using technology as a means for boosting small business; a planned partnership between Triad Adult and Pediatric Medicine and the New Reidsville Public Housing Authority; and the planned Nurse-Family Partnership Program, which will pair home visiting nurses with at-risk moms and children up until the age of two. The fifth edition of the County Health Rankings continues to show us where we live matters to our health.

March 10, 2014 - Communities In Schools Program Launch - Rockingham County, NC
New Student Success Model Launches for Rockingham County Middle School Students
Eden, NC -Today (March 10, 2014), local foundation leaders, school leaders and elected officials join together to launch a new student success model for students at Holmes and Reidsville Middle Schools. Communities In Schools of North Carolina (CISNC) will launch services to more than 1400 students across the two campuses.
Bringing CISNC into Rockingham County Schools is the culmination of two community conversations that both identified the needs and challenges of middle school students as key to community success. The Rockingham County Education Foundation, Reidsville Area Foundation and Rockingham County Schools were identifying middle school as the place in the education spectrum where local students were most at risk of failure. At the same, time the Healthy Carolinians Community Assessment also identified the need for services to meet the social and academic needs of the same age group. Both organizations were concerned that middle school students appeared to be at greater risk for dropping out, making poor decisions resulting in poor health outcomes and engaging in criminal behavior.
As a result, a leadership team developed and Communities In Schools of North Carolina (ClSNC), a leading dropout prevention organization, was engaged to bring in services and supports for middle school students at both Reidsville and Holmes Middle Schools.
Jacinta Blair will serve as the CIS Student Support Specialist for both schools. Blair has a proven history of working with youth to change outcomes by building one-on-one relationships with students and families. I enjoy helping my students dream and reach for the sky, said Blair. It is critical for our youth to have goals and set them early.
Blair will provide whole school services such as bullying programs and career or college fairs. She will also provide targeted intervention services to meet the needs of individual students to ensure their success in school and life.
About Communities in Schools of North Carolina
Communities in Schools of North Carolina is a member of the leading dropout prevention organization in the nation, working collaboratively with 44 NC communities to impact the lives of more than 200,000 youth each year. CISNC provides students with one-to-one relationships with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow a healthy future, a marketable skill and a chance to give back to the community upon graduation from high school. The mission of CISNC is to surround students with a community of supports, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
