Rocky Knob Saddle Video
Rocky Knob is an accurate description of the shape of the mountain that bears its name. Rocky Knob was one of the first developed areas built on the Parkway. Rock Castle Gorge, known for its beautiful rock crystalline quartz formations, was once home for several mountain families whose lives we remember through the apple orchards and abandoned stone chimneys. One of the Parkway's most popular attractions, nearby Mabry Mill (milepost 176.1), was a gristmill and sawmill for many years in the early part of this century.
Today the Rocky Knob Recreational Area covers more than 4000 acres. It offers many diversions for visitors, including hiking trails, a visitor center, campground, backcountry camping and picnic area. Interpretive talks and demonstrations are given in the summer months at Mabry Mill and four trails offer a variety of scenic and historical wonders.
The lush and forested slopes of Rock Castle Gorge suggest that man has been an infrequent visitor here, but that is not the case. A century ago this gorge supported a substantial community of 30 families. Most residents were farmers who raised hogs, grew corn, hunted and harvested wild plants. The community's traditional life was altered dramatically in the late 1800's when industry entered the area. Independent mountaineers quickly became dependent on the cash income that nearby cotton mills and timber companies provided. Over the years, people moved elsewhere to work. By the 1920's, fewer and fewer families called this rugged area home.
In the decades that followed, nature has reclaimed the gorge. Today, more than 60 species of native trees, 25 species of delicate ferns and over 200 species of wildflowers shade and color the gorge and its remnants of old home sites and gristmills. Wild turkey, fox, bear, deer, bobcat and other animals roam the forest, plying their ancient patterns and rhythms of life. In 1984, the Rock Castle Gorge Loop Trail was designated a National Recreational Trail in recognition of its outstanding features.

David
I want to thank you for the outstanding customer service you and Jason provided during the reservation process and our stay in Floyd, VA for the Oktoberfest event at Chantilly Farm. When we reserved our RV site we requested a full hookup site and we were extremely happy with the site provided. The RV site provided for easy hookup and disconnect at arrival and departure. We found your camping area at Chantilly Farm located in a rural setting which provided peace, tranquility and a noticeable absence of noise. The sounds of the neighboring farm animals and wildlife provided an atmosphere for relaxing as well as a peaceful night's sleep. The ease of access to the Oktoberfest event was added value to our stay as our daughter was participating in the event. We had easy access to our RV during the event and a full view of the event from the site. You and Jason have proven that customer service is not yet dead and that there is still truth in advertising. We intend to return for future camping in the area and look forward to seeing the improvements planned for next season. Again, thank you for the service provided by you and your staff.

Hiking Buffalo Mountain in Floyd County, Virginia
Hiking the Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve is one of my favorite hikes in southern Virginia. At 3,971 feet above sea level, Buffalo Mountain is the highest point in Floyd County. The mountain towers over the surrounding countryside. Many rare plant and animal species are protected in this natural area.
There is only one official trail in the area, a steep but relatively short out and back trail to the summit. The grassy and rocky bald summit offers some amazing views of the surrounding area, including well into North Carolina.
I've lost count of how many times I have hiked this trail, but this was the first time taking my small son along. We both enjoyed the day on Buffalo Mountain. Thanks for watching!

April 11, 2015 Hike To Buffalo Mountain in Willis Virginia
Joey Mauck and Greg Story venture to Buffalo Mountain in Willis Virginia just a few miles out of Floyd Virginia. The long gravel road to get to the parking lot was intense as the 2000 Daewoo Lanos drove down the only way in and out dirt road to the trailhead of the mountain. Luckily, the Daewoo made it up and down without any other traffic. As we got to the trailhead, we looked straight up the mountain and much to my surprise, Greg and I achieved the top of Buffalo Mountain within 30-40 minutes. One of the easiest trails yet! It was a pleasure to add this mountain on my hiking stick. I will be back many more times. The view is like no other I've seen yet. Get to Buffalo Mountain!

Rock Castle Gorge Trail at Rocky Knob
Gorgeous day in SW Virginia. Drove up to mile 169 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and took a long 10.8 mile hike on the Rock Castle Gorge Trail. Trail is not recommended for beginners, many boulders to cross and very steep.
Philpott Lake
Nestled among the rolling foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge, Philpott Lake is a scenic wonderland. The lake covers 3,000 acres with 100 miles of shoreland.
Visitors to the lake are always amazed at the natural beauty of the area. Most areas are under forest cover. There are numerous recreational opportunities, including: boating, swimming, picnicking, hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation.
The lake has eight campgrounds, six beach areas, and nine boat launches. Visitors to Philpott should begin with a trip to the Visitor Center for maps and info on lake safety and programs.
The lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1948 and 1951, with it opening in 1953. Philpott Lake is convenient to Greensboro, NC (60 miles), Roanoke, VA (50 miles), Winston-Salem, NC (60 miles), and Raleigh, NC (130 miles), and Richmond, VA (190 miles).

Family Fun in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia
Short video showing some of our fun family day trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southern Virginia. This is a route that we do multiple times per year.
Stop 1 usually involves a stop at the Lover's Leap overlook near Vesta, VA, before continuing on to some of the interesting country stores of Meadows of Dan. A stop of Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway is mandatory! Stop 2 is a dozen miles north of the mill, continuing along the Parkway to the Buffalo Mountain Overlook, where a short hike along the Rockcastle Creek Gorge Trail takes us to the summit of Rocky Knob. This is the high point for Patrick County at 3572 feet above sea level. Our final stop is always the town of Floyd, Virginia. A great place for some coffee or a full meal, and no visit to Floyd is complete without stopping in at the Floyd Country Store for great Bluegrass and Old Time music.
Thanks for watching!
