The first thing we did during our trip to Denver was visit the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge! You can drive all around the park and it's free to enter! You will see prairie dogs everywhere!!! lol... If you're lucky, you may see a herd of bison and also a few deer too. Definately recommend visiting this place. It's really close to the airport (DEN)!

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a 15,988-acre (64.70 km2) National Wildlife Refuge located adjacent to Commerce City, Colorado, in the United States. It is approximately 8 miles (13 km) northeast of downtown Denver. The facility is on the grounds of the former Rocky Mountain Arsenal, a United States Army chemical weapons manufacturing facility. The site was designated a national wildlife refuge in 1992 by the United States Congress, and underwent a costly environmental cleanup in order to remove pollutants. The refuge is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. More than 330 species of wildlife inhabit the refuge, including raptors, deer, raccoons, coyotes, white pelicans, black-footed ferrets, black-tailed prairie dogs, and bison.

The National Eagle Repository at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge
During a visit to the 15,000-acre Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City, CO about 30-min west of the Denver International Airport (DEN) I learned about The National Eagle Repository.
Along with the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge being a home where the bison, black-tailed prairie dog and black footed ferret play it’s also where The National Eagle Repository, a one of a kind facility does business;

Most of them of course die in the wild and they may be found right away, maybe days or weeks before they're found. And maybe scavenged on too sometimes before they're found, so many of them, there's not a whole lot we can do with them but usually there's at least a few feathers we can salvage. And we could use those for people that are just asking for loose feathers, that will help us fill their request, or for the whole birds that have some damage but not too bad, then we could use those feathers to help give us a bunch of feathers to make up for the few feathers that are damaged on the whole bird.

We're basically looking at the condition of the birds and once we decide what can be used and what can't be used, then orders are filled with those birds. So we have a number of categories available, a lot of times birds are not able to be used as a whole bird so they'll be used for wing orders, for loose feather orders, or other part orders, like heads and claws, trunk orders.

This is a golden eagle. It says it's a golden eagle. And it obviously was pretty well decomposed. Some of the remains are laying out in the field. You can see all the grass they picked up with it. And just bagged it up and sent it to us. We tell people to send us everything. We'll take a look at it and see what we can do with it. So, there'll probably be a bunch of feathers in there that we can salvage.
