A Colorado Wilderness Adventure in the San Juan Mountains
Hiking off trail deep into Colorado wilderness in the San Juan Mountains, where the wildlife is abundant and snow lingers after a long and harsh winter. During my hike I encountered a large herd of elk and filmed them as they traversed the alpine landscape as high as 13,000'.
This video was shot on the spur of the moment with a dSLR (no tripod and obviously no external mic), but I wanted to share a true wilderness experience on foot in the mountains of Colorado.

Camping Trip - Weminuche Wilderness, San Juan Mtns, SW Colorado
A vid/slideshow of memories and sum glowsticking (at 4:48) from this amazing place buried deep in the mountains of Colorado.
One of my most favorite and most camped places in Colorado is the Williams Creek Reservoir area at the gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness in the San Juan Mtns of south-western Colorado, north of Pagosa Springs. Its a 4.5 hour drive from where i live in the denver metro area, but the seclusion and intense serenity of the Weminuche wilderness is worth much much more than that. Over my two trips there this summer, ive compiled enough photos/footage to create a slideshow/vid that can at least briefly show the majesty of the place and the moments created between you and the people you go with =] I hope you enjoy.

Winter In Colorado
A wintry look at Colorado with snow covered, sub-zero frigid scenes of...
Gunnison River Valley - A memorable beautiful, breathtaking drive along the frozen Gunnison River and its lakes towards the Black Canyon.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.
Mt. Crested Butte - One of Colorado's top rugged mountains great skiing. Being just three miles north of the historic, quaint town of Mt. Crested Butte (9,375 feet elevation) ... makes the Mt. Crested Butte area one of Colorado's best places to visit with a scenic drive from Gunnison 30 miles to its south and places beyond.
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve - Snow covered look at the the tallest dunes in North America that are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. The always open park and preserve's diversity can be experienced through hiking, sand sledding, seasonal splashing in Medano Creek, wildlife watching, and more!

Durango's Top Summer Adventures - Rafting, Jeeping, & Mesa Verde National Park
Those seeking to get on the river for the first time or those looking to get their white water season off to a serene start, should consider rivers we would classify as “milder” options. These rivers typically have the Class I “moving water” to comfortably float down the river, some Class II “splashes” that get your legs wet just over the side of the boat, and potentially some Class III “wet and fun” that get you soaked head to toe! This is a great way to experience white water rafting in Colorado without getting in over your head. A mild option we provide in Colorado is the Lower Animas in Durango:
Ready for the next step up when it comes to white water rafting in Colorado? Steer towards a more intermediate river. These usually provide Class I “moving water”, Class II “splashes”, Class III “wet and fun”, and even some Class IV “big drops” which jump start your heart as you paddle through exciting whitewater. These rivers will keep you excited while you are able to take in some incredible scenery. These rivers can be more technical than the milder options, and they usually require a little more work as the guests must be willing to paddle. The payoff is very much worth it! The Upper Piedra River near Pagosa Springs is a great intermediate option:
Looking for the ultimate adventure that will make the hair on your arms stand up and your heart pump quickly? Then jump on the wild options of white water rafting in Colorado! The two rivers in Colorado we offer that we classify as high adventure are the Lower Piedra in Pagosa Springs and the Upper Animas in the Silverton area. The Upper Animas at high water, many consider to be the most difficult commercially run trip in the United States! Both of these areas provide Class II “splashes”, Class III “wet and fun”, Class IV “big drops” and Class V rapids that will get your adrenaline pumping and often need to be portaged. Both rivers you must be 16 years old and up and also in good health and physically fit. At Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours, we also take extra precautions on these rivers such as smaller guest to guide customer ratios, guides with more river miles than required by the state with trip leaders averaging 5,000 river miles for the Upper Animas, and have extra certifications such as wilderness safety. Other precautions we take include extra safety boats and required pre trip wetsuit fittings and practice swims. These rivers will leave you on top of the world!
On our Durango Jeep Tour you will see numerous wildflowers, high-alpine meadows, and avalanche gullies. Following the La Plata River (meaning “Silver” in Spanish) to La Plata City, an old mining town established in 1875, you’ll discover the remnants of old mining claims. These include a tall intact chimney left from the crew quarters, the framework of old cabins, and tailing piles from actual mining areas. Then, you’ll continue to the peak of Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet above sea level (also above tree-line).
Explore Colorado’s most preserved mining sites and immerse yourself in the history of the American West. Tour into the Tundra high above Silverton, a world away from the stresses of modern life with waterfalls, mountain wildlife, beautiful vistas and Colorado’s famous wildflowers. A great trip for the whole family and kids are extra entertained with our Mild to Wild scavenger hunt. Find the items on the checklist and get some fool’s gold!
A true Durango vacation is not complete without a day at Mesa Verde National Park. Relive history on our Mesa Verde Discovery Tour. Discover the rich culture and architecture of the Ancestral Puebloans on a small, guided interpretive tour. Explore Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree Cliff Dwellings. Take in 700 years of history on the Mesa Loop. Explore the museum and Visitor’s Center and enjoy a delicious, deli-style lunch.
MOUNTAIN TOP AT DOME ROCK
Mountain Top at Dome Rock was built to maximize both privacy and surrounding views. Constructed by the owner/contractor, the end-of-the road and up top placement provides views of Dome Rock within the Dome Rock Wildlife Management Area (W.M.A.), the Four Mile Creek valley and several outlying mountain ranges. The 38.3-acre property is directly adjoined on the north, east and south by larger acreage private ranches that have been placed in conservation. Immediately adjacent to these ranches are the Dome Rock W.M.A. and Mueller State Park public lands that combine to total for approximately 12,000-acres. The Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument just to the north contains an additional 6,000-acres of public lands (see links below). Current ownership maintains a verbal agreement with the parcel owner to the north granting walk-in access to the Dome Rock W.M.A.
The topography of the Dome Rock W.M.A. supports one of Colorado’s largest populations of big horn sheep, which are frequently viewed scaling the rocks and roaming the hillsides. Good numbers of trophy elk and mule deer move through the property, with occasional whitetail, black bear, mountain lion and turkey sightings. Detailed information can be provided regarding big game hunting availability and requirements in management unit 581 and from the subject property.
Land:
The larger tract consists of two contiguous parcels totaling for 38.3-acres. The large parcel at 36.0-acres increases in elevation from the main entrance. As shown on the provided maps, the log residence was placed in the far northeast corner of the tract in maximizing views and open space areas. Topography consists of various rock formations, native grass meadows and pine and aspen tree-lined draws that serve to attract wildlife. The smaller parcel of 2.3-acres is situated at the entrance to the larger property off-of Navajo Trail. As a separately platted parcel, an owner would have the option to keep the lot and metal shop building attached to the larger tract or sell the 2.3-acres to a third-party as a separately developable homesite.
Improvements:
The well-maintained log home was constructed in 2006 by the owner, an experienced log home building contractor to the area. It totals for approximately 3,032 total square feet and consists of a ranch design with garden-level basement and attached two-car garage. The main level floorplan contains the master suite with five-piece custom bathroom, additional half-bathroom, living room with large stone fireplace and woodstove, kitchen and laundry room. There are two decks, accessed from the master suite and kitchen/dining room that provide perfect gathering areas for enjoying the unique views. The lower-level plan includes three bedrooms, full bathroom, living/recreation room with wet bar, mechanical room and storage. The fourth bedroom contains a large walk-in closet (current use is an office with adjoining workshop/craft room). Electricity is provided via solar panels and a newly installed fully-redundant back-up generator.
A 36’ x 48’ (1,728 SF) shop building was also constructed in 2006 on the lower parcel. The over-sized 12’ x 14’ overhead door will accommodate storage of the largest of RV’s (including diesel pushers) with abundant remaining space for toys and other equipment.
Located just 25-minutes from the city of Woodland Park and one-hour from Colorado Springs, this is a must-see Colorado home providing one-of-a-kind views and privacy. Call to schedule a private tour and click on the links below for a more detailed description of the nearby public land areas.
