Rökstenen på Ödeshög, Östergötland, Sverige
Rökstenen is the most well-known rune stone, featuring the longest known runic inscription. It can be seen by the church in Rök south of Lake Tåkern (between Mjölby and Ödeshög, close to the E4), Östergötland, Sweden. It is considered the first piece of written Swedish literature and thus it marks the beginning of the history of Swedish literature.
Some of my ancestors came from this part of Sweden. My great great grandfather was from Hov, just on the northeast shore of Tåkern, and my great great grandmother was from Väversunda, at the west end of Tåkern. It is likely they were aware of Rökstenen, and probably saw it before emigrating to the U.S. in the late 1800s. My great great great great grandmother was born in Rök in 1778. Who knows, maybe I am even a descendant of the person who carved Rökstenen!
Rökstenen was probably erected in the first half of the 800s. This is indicated by the archaic language, an early form of Old Norse, which is different from the language on later rune stones. The claim that Tjodrik (generally assumed to be Theodoric the Great) died nine generations previously also puts the stone in the early 800s.
It is not known where the stone was originally located but probably stood near the present site. The church was built in the 1100s and next to it was built a shed to store the tithe. Rökstenen was set into the shed's stone wall facing outward. In the early 1600s a drawing of the stone was published. During the 1670s, Secretary of the Antiquities Authority Johan Hadorph copied the stone in a woodcut. The woodcut was published in 1750 in Johan Göransson's runological works.
When the old church was demolished in 1843 it was discovered that the stone had runes on all sides. The stone was then laid in the porch of the new church. In 1862, however, the stone was taken out and erected at the western cemetery wall. In 1933 it was moved to its present location outside the cemetery under a protective roof. It is likely that the stone originally had a straighter position. Place the vertical carvings vertically so the lower rows are horizontal.

Glänås Visitor Center at Lake Tåkern, Östergötland, Sweden
On Saturday, May 17th, 2014, Princess Estelle of Sweden, Duchess of Östergötland, in her first official engagement formally dedicated a new visitor center and children's fairy-tale trail at Glänås, along the southern shore of Lake Tåkern.
The images in this video were taken at Glänås in August of 2011, when the new visitor center was still under construction.
Tåkern is located in western Östergötland, Sweden, just east of the larger Lake Vättern. Tåkern is considered one of northern Europe's most important bird lakes. It is 12 km long and 8 km wide, with an average depth only 0.8 meters (2.6 ft). The whole lake, with the surrounding shoreline, has been a formally designated nature reserve since 1975. Around 300 species of birds are known to utilize Tåkern.
