Røldal Stave Church
he church was built between 1200 and 1250, and is famous for its healing crucifix still in the church. According to legend it sweats once a year on Olsok (July 6th after the Julian calendar), and the sweat has healing power. Røldal was one of the most important sites of pilgrimage in Norway during the middle ages and pilgrims continued to come until 1835, longer than any other place in Norway. The church is beautifully decorated, and is still the parish church for Røldal. Guided tours during the summer season. There are several pilgrim trails in connection with Røldal stave church.

Katie and Jason got married in a Norwegian stave church, in a small pittoresque village in Norway. Surrounded by mountains and traditional wooden buildings, they celebrated their love to each other. Urnes Stave Church (UNESCO/NHK)
The wooden church of Urnes (the stavkirke) stands in the natural setting of Sogn og Fjordane. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is an outstanding example of traditional Scandinavian wooden architecture. It brings together traces of Celtic art, Viking traditions and Romanesque spatial structures.

When wood beats steel: Norse church in shape after 800 years
With the conversion of Norway to Christianity (beginning around 1000 AD), wooden “stave” churches were built across the countryside. Over 800 churches were built in the country using “staves”, or thick wooden posts, for support, and Viking woodworking prowess (often built with just wood, without nails or glue.).
Built sometime between 1180 and 1250 AD, the Borgund Stave Church is the best preserved of Norway’s 28 existing stave churches. We talked to one resident of Borgund (population 492) who explained some of the secrets to the wooden structures 800-year lifespan (e.g. the valley’s dry climate, the base of stones so no wood touches the ground, and 12th Century Norway’s colder climate which contributed to heartier trees).
Our guide explained that the carvings at the top of the church could have been a mashup for Christian and Norse symbols. “From Christianity, you have the tree of life and also in Norse mythology you have the tree called Yggdrasil. The Viking era was pretty much over when the state churches began to be built here, but people hold on to their traditions. It wasn’t like a light switch to become a Christian.”

Stave Church, Norway
Stave churches of the Middle Ages (476-1492) are Norway’s most important contribution to the world’s architectural heritage. Today there are about 28 of these Stavkirkes left after some 900 years. At one time, more than 1000 stavkirkes were built. Most of them dating from the first half of the 12C. Few stave churches were constructed after the Black Plague (1346-1353), arriving in Norway about 1350. The building of these churches marked the beginning of Christianity in Norway, a period of transformation from the pagan Viking to the Christian Norwegian. As a result most to the stavkirkes were covered with pagan image and symbols. Standing in front of a stavkirke, one cannot but admire the beauty of these buildings and the ingenuity of the people who created such grandiose soaring wooden structures.
