The Ancient Roman Agora In Athens ✔
➤”The Roman Agora at Athens is located to the north of the Acropolis and to the east of the Ancient Agora.
The original Agora was encroached upon and obstructed by a series of Roman buildings, beginning with the imperial family's gift to the Athenians of a large odeion (concert hall). The Odeon of Agrippa was built by him in around 15 BC, and measured 51.4 by 43.2 metres, rose several stories in height, and – being sited just north of the Middle Stoa – obstructed the old agora. In return for the odeion, the Athenians built a statue to Agrippa at the site of the previous agora; they based it on a plinth recycled from an earlier statue by covering the old inscription with a new one
North of the odeion was a new temple to Ares, which completed the repurposing of the old agora. The functions of the old agora were transferred to the Roman Agora, which was built around 100 metres east of the original agora. The Roman Agora has not today been fully excavated, but is known to have been a peristyle open space. To its south was a fountain. To its east, behind a marble colonnade, were shops and an Ionic propylaeum (entrance). To its west was a Doric propylaeum.”

BBC.Building the Ancient City: Athens and Rome.1of2.Athens (720p)
Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill takes us on a journey across stunning locations in Greece and Italy to find out how Athens gave birth to the idea of a city run by free citizens 2,500 years ago. Every aspect of daily life from defence to waste disposal was controlled not by a king, but by the Athenians themselves. We discover how the Greeks created the first system of open government, and wrote the first constitution that laid down the rights of Athenian citizens nearly 2,000 years before the Magna Carta.
A walk in Ancient Agora of Athens
The Ancient Agora of Classical Athens is the best-known example of an ancient Greek agora, located to the northwest of the Acropolis and bounded on the south by the hill of the Areopagus and on the west by the hill known as the Agoraios Kolonos, also called Market Hill.

Roman Temples VS Greek Temples - Understanding The Differences
Ancient Roman temples were among the most important buildings in Roman culture... only a few survive in any sort of complete state.
The most common architectural plan had a rectangular temple raised on a high podium, with a clear front with a portico at the top of steps, and a triangular pediment above columns.
Public religious ceremonies of the official Roman religion took place outdoors.
Some remains of many Roman temples survive but the relatively few near-complete examples were nearly all converted to Christian churches.
Greek temples interiors too did not serve as meeting places, since the sacrifices and rituals dedicated to the respective deity took place outside them.
Greek temples were designed and constructed according to set proportions, mostly determined by the lower diameter of the columns or by the dimensions of the foundation levels. The nearly mathematical strictness of the basic designs thus reached was lightened by optical refinements.
In spite of the still widespread idealised image, Greek temples were painted - bright reds and blues contrasted with the white of the building stones or of stucco. The more elaborate temples were equipped with very rich figural decoration in the form of reliefs and pedimental sculpture.
Canonical Greek temples maintained the same basic structure throughout many centuries. The Greeks used a limited number of spatial components, influencing the plan, and of architectural members, determining the elevation.

A day in the life of an ancient Athenian - Robert Garland

View full lesson:
It’s 427 BCE, and the worst internal conflict ever to occur in the ancient Greek world is in its fourth year. Athens is facing a big decision: what to do with the people of Mytilene, a city on the island of Lesbos where a revolt against Athenian rule has just been put down. How did these kinds of decisions get made? Robert Garland outlines a day in the life of Athenian democracy.

World's 1st Meteo Station Tower of the Winds @ ROMAN AGORA Athens by Adeyto & Huawei P20 PRO
Among the 2500 years old cool relics in the ROMAN AGORA archeological site is the Tower of the Winds or the Horologion of Andronikos Kyrrhestes, an octagonal Pentelic marble clocktower that functioned as a horologion or timepiece. It is considered the world's first meteorological station. The structure features a combination of sundials, a water clock, and a wind vane.It was supposedly built by Andronicus of Cyrrhus around 50 BC but according to other sources, might have been constructed in the 2nd century BC before the rest of the forum.
Constructed in 11 BCE by donations from Julius Caesar and Augustus, the tall entrance gate was made of 4 Doric columns and a base of Pentelic marble. It was a monument dedicated by the Athenians to their patroness Athena Archegetis.
The original Agora was encroached upon and obstructed by a series of Roman buildings, beginning with the imperial family's gift to the Athenians of a large odeion (concert hall). The Odeon of Agrippa was built by him in around 15 BC and in return for the odeion, the Athenians built a statue to Agrippa at the site of the previous agora.
The functions of the old agora were transferred to the Roman Agora, which was built around 100 metres east of the original agora. The Roman Agora has not today been fully excavated.
In an on-site exhibition we get to see the famous sculpture portrait of HADRIAN!
