Vaison la Romaine in Southeastern France
Vaison la Romaine is in southeastern France it has Roman Ruins and a complete separate medieval town with a castle ruin at the top. A 2000 year old Roman Bridge that withstood a 20th century flood that washed away two 20th century built bridges.

[EN] Vaison-la-Romaine is located approx. 30 km north-east of Orange, on the river Ouveze. It is divided into two parts. The first is a medieval old town from the twelfth century, situated on a hill. The second part lies below the hill and it is a new town, but also contains a very interesting monuments from the Roman period.

Vaison-la-Romaine (Latin: Vasio Julia Vocontiorum), sometimes referred to as “The Pompeii of France” is a commune in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in southeastern France, and indeed has many wonderful Roman ruins. Both in the upper and lower parts of the city divided by the Ouvèze river, an area that has been inhabited at least since the Bronze Age. In the late 4th century BCE Vaison became capital of the Vocontii, a Celtic tribe.
The Roman conquest in (125-118 BCE) still allowed the Vocontii some autonomy as they managed to maintain their religious center in Luc-en-Diois. Vocontii authority in the Romanization of the Celtic oppidum (large fortified Iron Age settlent) meant the city plan wasn’t completely done over according to Roman orthography. Modern archeology (work done by Christian Goudineau) suggests that Vocontian aristocrats moved down from the oppidum and established villas along the river, around which the Gallo-Roman city then grew.
Vasio would become one of the richest cities of the Roman province Gallia Narbonensis, with many geometric mosaic pavements and a small theatre, probably built during the reign of Tiberius as his statue was found in a prominent place on its site. Also found in the theatre during the 19th century was The Polyclitan Vaison Diadumenos (now in British Museum) and Augustan historian Pompeius Trogus is an example of a prominent Roman born at Vasio.
Barbarian invasions then soon followed after the first raid hit in 276, from which Vasio actually recovered, but in the 5th century the state of affairs where such as the general disorder meant that Christians had began reusing the theatre benches as tombstones. Vaison then first belonged to the Burgundians, was taken by the Ostrogoths in 527, then by Clotaire I, King of the Franks in 545, and then became part of Provence.
Vaison-la-Romaine is well worth a visit, it’s obvius provencal charm aside it’s of particular interest for its geography and Roman ruins. The valley floor was safe from attacks during both Roman and modern times but during the Dark Ages attacks were frequent, and the medieval town retreated high on the rocky cliff to a more defensible position. The Roman ruins are found down in the valley on the banks of the river crossed by an ancient bridge from the 1st century CE, where the modern town is also located.

Vaison ville romaine éternelle
De Vaison, on aperçoit la ville haute et médiévale.
La ville moderne est en bas, séparée par la rivière Ouvèze.
C'est au chanoine Joseph Sautel que l'on doit la découverte en 1907 de la ville romaine. La prospérité de Vaison sous l'empire explique le luxe retrouvé dans les villas romaines.
Celle du buste en argent fait 5000 mètres carrées et dépasse de loin celles de Pompéi. Le pont romain à arche unique de 17 mètres fait la fierté de Vaison. Il est resté intact depuis 2000 ans. En 1992, des trombes d'eau s'abattent sur la ville transformant l'Ouvèze en torrent dévastateur.
On comptera 37 victimes et 150 maisons détruites. Mais la ville se relève aidée par un formidable élan de solidarité.
La cité des Vocondes enchantera toujours le promeneur curieux des vestiges du passé.

Pont du Gard - ancient Roman aqueduct, Provence, France [HD] (videoturysta)
[EN] Pont du Gard is an arched structure with three levels. It is 360m long and 50m high. It was constructed between years 40-60 A.D. and was the greatest bridge ever built in classical times. This is just an epic example of ancient Roman technology. Pont du Gard was a part of a water supply system that stretched over many kilometers to supply water from Alps to the city of Nimes.

The Ancient Roman Ruins of Salona - Croatia HD
Salona was an ancient city and capital of Dalmatae in the time of the Roman empire. Dalmatae is modern day Dalmatia, part of Croatia, and Salona is modern day Solin. Colonia Martia Iulia Salona (full name of the ancient city) was founded after the Roman civil wars under Julius Caesar, but it's roots date back in the time of the Greeks. In the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, he built a palace nearby, this structure, known as Diocletian's Palace, became the core of the modern city of Split. Salona was destroyed in the invasions of the Avars and Slavs in the sixth and seventh centuries CE. Today only shells remain of this ancient city and they are in order of appearance: Amphitheatre, Basilica of the Five Martyrs, Theatre & Forum, Five Bridges, Episcopal center & city baths and Manastirine.

Vaison-La-Romaine : 22 septembre 1992
Le Mardi 22 septembre 1992, un orage dit rétrograde deversa des pluies torrentielles démentes sur Vaison et ses alentours. Entre 12h30 et 15h30, il tomba 300mm d'eau. Un camping, des lotissements, des voitures et malheureusement des humains furent emportés par l'Ouvèze dépassant de 17 mètres sa côte d'alerte au niveau du pont romain.
Ces images avaient à l'époque, ému la France entière.
En tout cas, ça reste la plus grande catastrophe naturelle française depuis l'après- guerre en France, avec 37 malheureuses victimes à Vaison, mais 45 sur tout le département.

The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD to carry water over 50 kilometres (31 mi) to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes) It crosses the Gardon River near the town of Vers-Pont-du-Gard in southern France. The Pont du Gard is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges, and one of the best preserved. It was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1985 because of its historical importance.
