Dare we say that Madrid is our favourite European city so far? The culture, the food, the people; it has its classic European vibes, yet deep in it feels so different. Maybe because the food is so good and good food is pretty much our thing, so it won us over pretty quick.
In terms of sights, there’s a few things to see and do - lots of great day trips which you’ll see in future episodes, but just to walk the streets and eat is enough for us!
Cafe Comercial

Glorieta de Bilbao, 7, 28004 Madrid, Spain
We began our trip at this seemingly humble cafe near our home. It’s one of the oldest cafes in Madrid, and you get the vibe that this place is pretty much an institution. We ordered a handful of tapas and to be honest, we were blown away by every single thing we had.
We had croquettes, the classic “tortilla” (not a Mexican tortilla, a delicious potatoey eggy oniony omelette), steak pepitas (not just a steak sandwich we swear!) and even the olives were ridiculously good. It definitely set the bar high for the rest of the trip, and we were a little worried we’d started too high, but our worries were unneeded.

We justified our breakfast choices with “But we’re in Madrid!” And decided it was more than OK to eat a breakfast of churros, poras - essentially deep fried dough and chocolate. This place was meant to be famous for their “poras”, the lesser known BIGGER brother of the churros, fatter too, and definitely underrated. We liked these more than the skinnier churros as it had more bite, satisfaction and chew. A much more local alternative to the bigger chains such as San Gines (we do go there too though at a later episode), it has a much more local vibe and was delicious all the same!

All we were told was “eat a calamari sandwich around the Plaza Mayor area”, so when we were there viewing the sites we decided to go on a hunt. No kidding, it seemed to be a very popular dish in the area, and this much loved calamari sandwich allured us in even though we had literally JUST eaten. We found this place and knew it was going to be great. Dirty oil, packed and bustling, we ordered one and munched on it outside. It was filled with hot, crispy, delicious calamari and what seemed to be a random sort of dish was incredibly satisfying. At 3 Euros you can’t really go wrong, and it would be hard to justify NOT grabbing one to try!
Casa De Valencia

Paseo del Pintor Rosales, 58, 28008 Madrid, Spain
Paella. Paella. Paella. The dish noone knows how to pronounce, but everyone knows to be classic Spanish food. As the restaurant name suggests, paella is awesome in Valencia, so we went to the restaurant that would hopefully replicate that as best as it could. The restaurant itself is classic old school, but that’s kinda what you want to see. No fusion, no change for decades, no mucking around. True enough, one bite of the paella (we got a seafood one) and you’re ruined. No more paella that’s been sitting in the pan all day can do. These are freshly made and nothing can compare. Every bite was incredible and we were just happy we made the trip out, even to eat this alone.
Madrid was already blowing us out of the water, and little did we know there was still SO. MUCH. MORE. TO COME.
Stay tuned guys!
Love,
Uel & Shannelle

For centuries, the greatest sailors in the world masterfully navigated the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, 3,000 years ago, their voyages stopped for a millennium – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who is inspired to leave the safety and security of her island on a daring journey to save her people. Inexplicably drawn to the ocean, Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho) convinces the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) to join her mission, and he reluctantly helps her become a wayfinder like her ancestors who sailed before her. Together, they voyage across the open ocean on an action-packed adventure, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills her quest and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sailed into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
