Misleading Reflection at the Rosenberg Palace
This video was shot at the Rosenberg Palace (former Institute for noblewomen) in the Prague Castle complex in the city of Prague, Czech Republic. The room contains the Baroque Holy Trinity Chapel and the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
It seems that to ease the strain on the necks of visitors contemplating the painting on the very tall ceiling, a mirror was installed on the floor. Alas, the mirror was installed at an angle facing the visitors that come through the door. As a result of this frame of reference, the image on the mirror appears flipped vertically with respect to the image in the ceiling. Some people looking at this would conclude that mirrors flip images vertically, but that is not the case. The correct positioning of the mirror should have been slanted in the direction of the man in the video standing behind the mirror. This would have maintained the image’s true orientation.
You can see my full post regarding what do mirrors really do on my website:

Prague's Old Royal Palace
The Old Royal Palace is part of the Prague Castle, Czech Republic. Its history dates back to the 12th century and it is designed in the Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its Vladislav Hall is used for inaugurations, being the most important representative hall in the country. It is also home to a copy of the Czech crown.

Europe 2018 Episode 02: Prague Castle
Prague Castle is a massive hilltop fortification comprised of the royal palace, two historic churches, and the humble residences of the castle staff. We visited the royal palace itself, which served as the king’s residence in medieval times, but photography was not permitted so this video focuses on the other parts of the castle complex. However some of the views of the town below are taken from the terrace of Vladislav Hall within the palace. It was from this hall in 1618 that Protestant nobles rebelling against the Habsburg emperor threw three of his officials out the window. They survived, as their fall was broken by the dung-filled moat, but this incident sparked the Thirty Years’ War.
The castle is also home to St Vitus Cathedral, the largest and most important church in Prague. The original church was consecrated by Wenceslas himself in 925. Charles IV began construction of today’s Gothic structure in 1344. The ceremonial entrance to the Cathedral, the “Golden Gate,” is adorned with glistening mosaics. The stained glass, statues, and other decoration on the church’s interior range from medieval to modern times. Near the end of our visit, we came to the chapel containing the tomb of Wenceslas, with walls lined with precious stones and scenes from the life of Wenceslas, all part of the original 14th c. decoration of the chapel.
St George’s Basilica is one of the oldest parts of the castle complex. This Romanesque basilica was founded in 920, with a Baroque façade from the late 17th century. A Gothic style chapel dedicated to Ludmila holds the saint’s tomb.
The so-called “Golden Lane” is the 16th c. street containing the modest homes of castle servants, defensemen, and tradesmen, including the goldsmiths after whom the street is named. The buildings continued to be occupied into the early 20th c., with Franz Kafka living in house #22 from 1916-1917.
The wonderful views from the castle terraces include Charles Bridge, which we’ll visit later.
The video ends with a series of still photos, most of which were taken by my wife, Pam.
Exploring Prague 3, Prague Castle
Although the Castle complex still includes the Old Royal Palace it is primarily a center for Czech Republic government, and office of the President. Castle Square, outside the complex is ringed with Palaces and Embassy buildings including the Schwarzenberg Palace with distinctive Sgraffito decoration. (3-D stucco enhanced by trompe-d'oeil techniques.)
St Vitus Cathedral is the central and most impressive landmark of Castle Hill. Conceived largely by Peter Parler, the Cathedral was begun in 1344. Only the eastern portion is genuinely Gothic, with the newer western portion blending perfectly. Under construction for 600 years. Thankfully not improved during the Baroque period, it retains many Medieval-Gothic details and eastern European motifs like the onion-domed towers.
Nearby, St George's Basilica stands in stark contrast to the Gothic cathedral. This Romanesque church is simple and austere. Many late 16th-century frescos survive due to careful restoration efforts that retained most of the original character and detailing of the building.
The Old Royal Palace is a late Gothic / Early Renaissance building but the exterior has changed completely several times and no longer resembles the original Palace. Inside, however, it still contains elaborate Renaissance vaults and tracery, coats of arms, original artifacts, and frescoes.
At the foot of Castle Hill stands the Church of St Nicholas, designed by the father-son architects Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhoffer, famous for their skill in High Baroque. (Neither lived to see it completed.) Constructed 1703 -- 1761, artwork and decoration were accomplished by Prague's best artists of the period. Key sculptures and the pulpit, (1765 by Richard and Peter Prachner) were added over time. Eastern influences, including stuatues of the Eastern Church Fathers, are blended with the Baroque decoration.
