Who knew you could see The iconic Delorean, A vintage Bat Mobile, and A Ghostbusters ride all in one place in Springfield, MO? What a treat it was for Tayton's birthday last year for him to see some of his favorite cars and for them to be located on The Mother Road! Not only are there those cars listed above, but there are many more classic cars here at the Route 66 Car Museum.

Seen Along Route 66
U.S. Route 66 or Route 66, also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles.

Historic Route 66
A conversation with Photographer David J. Schwartz of Pics on 66 at The Original Wagon Wheel Motel on Historic Route 66 Cuba MO The Wagon Wheel Cabins, Cafe & Station were built in the chaotic times of 1935 when the nation was barely out of the depression and the dust bowl had destroyed millions of acres.
Robert W. & Margaret Martin where the first owners of the Wagon Wheel Cabins, purchasing the land in 1934. The Martins hired Leo Friesenhan to do the building. Records show they worked on all the buildings at the same time and the local farmers carried the stone to him. Leo's combination of stone, design, and nearly indestructable mortar recipe has endured for over 75 years, giving the Wagon Wheel its spot on the National Registry of Historic Places.
In 1941 Robert had 14 cabins,12 car shelters, and 2 locked garages.Due to the increasing length of autos, tourism trade, and military traffic the garages in the buildings were converted into units.
After World War II in 1946 the property was split: the cabins sold to a partnership and the cafe and station to another couple, with the station being leased to The Standard Oil Co. This only lasted one year when John & Winifred Mathis purchased the cabins and William & the notorious Sadie Mae Pratt took over the cafe.
Most important, John designed the famous Wagon Wheel Neon Sign at his kitchen table changing the name to Wagon Wheel Motel instead of cabins. He added the block building containing 4 units, the laundry and storage and also built a good reputation along Rte 66.
In 1963 Pauline and Hallie Roberts purchased the motel and immediately opened Ye Old Coffee Shoppe which closed in 1980 when Hallie died. Pauline later married Harold Armstrong and continued to run the motel for a total of 40 years when she passed away in 2003. Harold followed in 2008.
Connie Echols purchased the motel from Harolds' son in Sept 2009. Updates and restoration have been non-stop on some of the most unique buildings left on Rte 66 today. The Cafe houses Connie's Shoppe and also serves as the motel office where the same check-in cards and desk are still used today. #youtubesmittytravels #travelvlog #smittytravels

Route 66 Part 1 'The Road Trip Begins' - Driving From Chicago To Springfield
Our Route 66 road trip begins, after spending a day in Chicago we set off down historic Route 66 from Chicago to Springfield, Illinois.
Here's our pre-trip planning post -
The start of the classic American road trip along the Mother Road. Our first stop was at the old Prison in Joliet where they filmed The Blues Brothers, it was too early to visit the Joliet Route 66 museum so we carried on down the road to the Gemini Giant 'Muffler Man' at the Launching Pad Diner in Wilmington
Next it on to the historic Standard Oil Gas Station in Odell before our lunchtime stop in Pontiac Illinois. We visited the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame & Museum where you can see Bob Waldmire's VW van and his converted Chevrolet school bus that he used when traveling Route 66.
Pontiac is also home to some amazing Route 66 murals and artwork.
Next, a quick stop at the Sprague's Super Service gas station Normal, Illinois before reaching Atlanta, IL.
In Atlanta you’ll find another ‘Muffler Man’ Paul Bunyon holding his precious hot dog which was used to advertise a restaurant in the 1960’s.
Just before we reach Springfield our final stop of our first day on Route 66 we come across Abraham Lincoln himself riding the world’s largest covered wagon, well that’s Route 66.
We spend the night in Springfield, the hometown of Abraham Lincoln.
Next time we travel from Springfield to Cuba Missouri.

January 2019 Visit
In town for a Missouri Route 66 meeting and decided to check out this museum. Very glad I did I stopped at several across my November Route 66 journey last year. This one is smaller than those but I feel the quality is higher with some amazing displays. Make sure to stop by the attached gift shop they carry a good selection of high quality goods. While in the area check the surrounding 66 icons and beautiful scenery.
