Kicking off the beginning of the end of Route 66 in California, we travel from Victorville to Barstow via the old Mother Road. Most of the road in this video is now apart of San Bernardino County Road (CR) 66, the only County Road in San Bernardino County.
US Highway 66 is the road that needs no introduction. Originally running from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, CA, the road traveled more then two thousand miles all the way. The road rose to fame with the Dust Bowl of the 1930's because of residents seeking a better life in Los Angeles. In The Grapes of Wrath, the road was given the nickname of 'The Mother Road', and was made into a musical tune by the Nat Cole Trio's hit '(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.
The road traveled eight states, and out of 2400 miles, California had the third longest stretch of highway, spanning 315 approximate miles, versus New Mexico's 380 miles and Arizona's 401 miles. US 66 originally ended in Downtown Los Angeles at the corner of Broadway and 7th St, but was later extended to Santa Monica when US 66 was rebranded as a 'road to paradise'.
In 1964, US Route 66 was legally decommissioned in the State of California, although it was still signed along Route 248 (later SR 248), Route 66 (modern SR 66), Route 15 (modern I-215), and Route 40. This was due to the 1964 renumbering in California which abolished the Legislative Route Number (LRN) System in favor of using the Signed Route number. California also tried to abolished as many multiplexes (multiple Signed Routes on one road) as possible. US 66 was first truncated to Pasadena, later La Verne, and finally Barstow until I-40 was completed in the 1970's, which marked the end of US 66 in California.
Now, with modern efforts of the getting the road back on the map, San Bernardino County has made it's own effort to resign the route in it's rural desert. Unlike portions in the Inland Empire which are maintained by their respective cities, the county has been responsible for maintenance of this road since Caltrans relinquished it. San Bernardino County also opted to sign CR 66 in Barstow and Needles, however I am unsure if the county or the city maintains these portions. Irregardless, CR 66 runs from just north of Victorville to Needles, via the National Trails Highway and The Needles Freeway (I-40).
Today we focus mainly what has become known as the Helendale section of the road, as it's the biggest town left along the old highway. This section runs north out of Victorville to make a rather odd, sweeping, 90 degree turn to level out to Barstow. Much of this section is the original alignment of US 66 dating to 1926, just widened to allow for safe travel of modern vehicles.
Thanks for watching!

California's Old Route 66: Barstow to Amboy Dashcam
Let's take a drive on old US 66! Starting in Barstow and headed east, I tried to follow the old 66 pavement as much as possible... with stops at the Bagdad Cafe, Ludlow, and of course, Roy's Motel and Cafe in Amboy, California. Enjoy the bumpy ride!

I made this trip in March, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

ARIZONA JAIL ON THE HISTORIC ROUTE 66 ALSO KNOWN AS WILL ROGERS HIGHWAY.
U.S. Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway after the humorist, and colloquially known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road) was a highway in the U.S. Highway System. One of the original U.S. highways, Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926. However, road signs did not go up until the following year. The famous highway originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).It was recognized in popular culture by both a hit song (written by Bobby Troup, originally recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio in 1946, and later performed by such artists as Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Manhattan Transfer and Depeche Mode) and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s.
Route 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime, changing its path and overall length. Many of the realignments gave travelers faster or safer routes, or detoured around city congestion. One realignment moved the western endpoint farther west from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica.
Route 66 was a major path of the migrants who went west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive even with the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.
U.S. 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985 after it was decided the route was no longer relevant and had been replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a National Scenic Byway of the name Historic Route 66. It has begun to return to maps in this form. Some portions of the road in southern California have been redesignated State Route 66, and others bear Historic Route 66 signs and relevant historic information.
Barstow, CA Harvey House Train Station
Like my Facebook page:
The Harvey House Railroad Depot, originally known as the Casa del Desierto, is a former Fred Harvey Harvey House located in Barstow, in the Mojave Desert within San Bernardino County, California, United States. Casa del Desierto now functions as an unstaffed Amtrak passenger station as well as housing Barstow city offices and two museums. It is now often referred to as the Barstow Amtrak Station.
The Casa del Desierto station and hotel was built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and replaced an earlier one built in 1885 that burned in 1908. It was designed by renowned Fred Harvey Company architect Mary Colter in a synthesis of Spanish Renaissance and Classical Revival architecture styles. The historic structure is an elegant presence in the Mojave Desert beside the intermittent Mojave River. Santa Fe then closed the station in 1973. Casa del Desierto was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The site was then designated as a California Historical Landmark in 1976.
The City of Barstow obtained the station in 1990 and moved several city offices into the building. The Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce operates out of Barstow Harvey House. Other public institutions located here are the Western America Railroad Museum on the east side and the Barstow Route 66 Mother Road Museum on the north side.
Shot are around this historic station. Enjoy!! Shot 7/21/14
