Front Royal, Virginia
A trail town along the Appalachian Trail, Front Royal perches along the Shenandoah River at the base of Shenandoah National Park. As we discovered in 48 hours of exploration, it’s a delightful destination for outdoorsy folks even if you don’t climb up to Skyline Drive.

Town Tip Thursday, A WHAT MATTERS Initiative--Coats for Kids Sponsored by Front Royal Rotary Club
Town Tip Thursday-A WHAT MATTERS Initiative...Watch this 2 minute video interview to learn of a way you can warm up a local child’s winter with just $20! According to a recent press release, The Rotary Club of Front Royal announced that it is partnering with the Warren County Department of Social Services again in 2018 to purchase coats for kids through Operation Warm. Last year, as part of the Club’s annual Doc Smith Christmas Basket Program, which provided 145 boxes of food to needy families in the Front Royal-Warren County community, the Club gave out 134 coats to children in need identified by the Department of Social Services.
The Doc Smith Christmas Basket program has been a long-standing program in Front Royal originated by Edgar C. “Doc” Smith, Chief of Police, in 1916. The program was named after him based on his continued service to the needy, and continues to serve 100-150 families annually throughout Warren County. A local Sorority (Psi Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority) had coordinated this program for approximately 30 years (1973-2003). The Sorority approached the Club in 2003 about the possibility of taking this program over, and the Club gladly did so.
Operation Warm was established in 1998 to provide coats for school children in need. For a child, a brand new winter coat can be #morethanacoat - it can change a child’s life and empower them with greater self-confidence and increased school attendance. Operation Warm, based in Pennsylvania, manufactures and provides a thoughtfully designed collection of brand new winter coats to children in need. Additional information on Operation Warm can be found at .
According to Social Services Director DeAnna Cheatham, “Partnering with Rotary Club of Front Royal provides an excellent opportunity to help children in Warren County with a basic necessity. Often people want to help their fellow community members but may be reluctant or uncertain of how they can best do that and be certain of where their donations are going. This program helps to address a real community need that faces some of our most vulnerable citizens and their families. Everyone can do something to help and this is a simple way to have a significant and direct impact. The mission of the Department of Social Services is to help people triumph over poverty, abuse and neglect. This program is just one of many services that the Department provides to help meet the ever changing needs of the community.”
County Administrator Doug Stanley who serves as the Board for Social Services and is heading up the fundraising for the Rotary Club added, “The idea for the effort came from the Coats for Kids Program in Winchester/Frederick County. In talking with Erik Beatley, Chairman of the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley and organizer of the Coats for Kids Program there, it seemed like a great opportunity to meet a need in the Front Royal-Warren County community. We were so excited to be able to provide 134 coats last year and we are hoping that we will be able to expand the program this year and have set a preliminary target of 150-175 coats for the 2018 holiday season.”
Anyone interested in donating to the program can drop off donations at the following locations:
Warren County Administration Office at the Warren County Government Center – 220 North Commerce Avenue, Suite 100
Department of Social Services at the Health and Human Services Complex

Surprising Secrets Hidden Inside the White House
The Emblematic White House. Home and Office to the President of the United States of America. Over the last 226 years it has been renovated, had extensions built and even been burnt down, so it's no surprise that today it's full of hidden features and built-in secrets!
#1 Secret Tunnels
There is actually a whole network of underground passages, rooms and tunnels buried beneath the White House. Two floors deep. Complete with a Bowling Alley, Dentist's and even a chocolate shop with rumors however spurious of a system of tunnels leading to other important buildings.
#2 Secret Alarms
You'd expect the president's Oval Office to be packed full of security guards, to protect him in case negotiations go sideways, right? But his elite bodyguards actually have to wait outside. Instead there are various items on the president's desk that if casually moved trigger secret alarms, signalling the guards to come rushing in.
#3 Air and Water Supply
Sometimes not all citizens are rooting for the same candidate to become president and it wouldn't take much for them to poison the President's water or air supply. That's why the water that enters the grounds passes through it's own special filtration system and is constantly monitored for toxins. Even the air inside the White House is pressurized higher than the air outside thus keeping out any possible chemical or biological attacks.
#4 Infrared Sensors
Over the years security within the White House grounds has multiplied. Gone are the days when you could wander right on up to the front door, as security has the place fenced off, with restricted areas hidden guards with dogs and even infrared sensors which trigger the alarms.
#5 Secret Trapdoor
For years it has been thought that there is a secret trapdoor underneath the President's desk. This perhaps stems from JFK's presidency, where an opening panel was added. However there is talk of a secret door panel in a wall in the Oval Office which leads to a hidden staircase descending into the White House's underground tunnel system.
#6 Rooftop Surveillance
Other than the occasional agents with cameras, the rooftops are filled with instruments and antennas said to be used to monitor the airspace above the grounds and perhaps even anti-drone vigilance.
#7 Pool Tunnel
The White House has an outdoor poor for the first family to enjoy the summer months. However heaven forbid an avid paparazzi should snap a picture of the Pressi in a speedo, the pool can be accessed through an underground tunnel. Problem solved.
#8 Pressure Pads
Apart from hidden sensors, the Oval Office also has pressure pads built into the floor so even though the agents stay outside, they know where the President is at all times, in case they have to burst in at any given time.
#9 Wine Cellar
The size of the first family's wine cellar is kept very hush hush, however judging by the underground bowling alley and chocolate shop, one can only imagine a winery of presidential proportions. But according to one source the wine cellar is only the size of a small closet.
#10 No Secrets
Having the most dangerous job in America requires a high level of surveillance. Dozens of agents knowing the locations and activities of the First Family members at all times. This becomes awkward when the President or code name: Renegade and his wife: Renaissance want to get intimate. Or according to inside agents code: When Renegade and Renaissance are Discussing the Bosnian Problem.
Which of these White House Secrets surprised you the most?

Popular eastside eatery reopens in new location
MILFORD (Adam Clements) -- An iconic local restaurant returns this weekend, marking a new era in the Tri-State. Roney's officially opens its doors again Saturday. It is surreal. A long time coming, After 15 months, the day eastside carnivores have longed for is finally here. Roney's is back. Formerly Roy Rogers, the old Roney's closed its doors in May of 2014 after a leasing dispute. Aside from some necessary upgrades, the new location on Milford Parkway is a spot on match of the old place. We tried to keep the outside as close to the original building as close to the old as possible, so people would be familiar with it. The sign is us. It represents Roney's. It'll be just like the old days. You'll see that sign and you'll know, 'there's Roney's' Brothers Gene and David Loftspring say the overwhelming support from the community let them know finding a new spot was a no brainer. We never realized what a loyal following we had, and we're excited to be back and just to be back open and back in the business, Gene Loftspring. I just didn't realize the outcry when we were closing. It was amazing, said David Loftspring. The famous menu is still the same, complete with fried chicken. The lucky R burger and, of course, the trademark roast beef sandwiches. We put it on a toasted, seeded bun and it just melts in your mouth. Thinly sliced, it's perfect. Hungry yet? You won't have to wait much longer Roney's is back in business Saturday at noon. Follow Adam Clements on Twitter @aclementswkrc and LIKE him on Facebook.

Bachman Estate Video Tour
Bachman Manor is a Tudor style 14,796 square foot home on a 29.55 acre property. It was built in 1975 by Randy Bachman of the band Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) for 3 million dollars as a weekend retreat, though by the time it was finished it had become the family's primary home. The home was used as a recording studio for Randy and guests who stayed there such as Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys, members of the Beatles, and rocker Sammy Hagar.
The estate as well as the property has had many upgrades since its original build. Bedrooms were expanded into luxurious suites, walls removed to reveal a more open floor plan with grand living spaces and historical features preserved. The chandelier, inspiration for BTO’s logo, still gloriously hangs in the front room.
The studio, where legendary tracks were recorded, maintains its chapel like quality.
An additional outbuilding equipped with a 9 car garage, bowling alley, and full basketball court were added, along with a large lake at the front entrance of the property.
Bachman-Turner Overdrive has sold over 20 million albums worldwide and are known for 1970's era songs, such as Let It Ride, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, and Takin' Care of Business. The home is currently offered at $2,900,000 reduced from $4,375,000. An AMAZING real estate opportunity for someone out there. Is it you????

Queen Royal - Where the Royals escape to the country
Ask any tourist where the Queen lives and Buckingham Palace will be the reply. But the house in The Mall is really just a ceremonial London base - the Queen's real love is the country and the walking, riding and fishing that it offers. The rest of the Royals love the outdoor life, too, and last week pictures emerged of Harry and Meghan's new country home, set in four Gloucestershire acres. They took a two-year lease on the £2.5million, four-bedroom Cotswolds farmhouse before their wedding last May and have hosted A-list friends there, including the Clooneys and tennis champ Serena Williams. Rather than live in a 21-room apartment in Kensington Palace once earmarked for them, they prefer the 18th century property on the Great Tew Estate, where the Beckhams are neighbours. It has a converted barn attached, with two kitchens on each floor (yes, two!) plus a spectacular sitting area with floor-to-ceiling windows. There is also a two-bedroom cottage for guests or staff in the grounds. But the couple's main home will be Frogmore Cottage on Windsor Castle's Home Park estate, which has 10 bedrooms, gym, sauna - and a nursery for their soon-to-arrive baby. So where do the rest of the Royals live away from the capital, when their biggest need is seclusion and security with cameras and armed police on hand? Here's their very grand portfolio of country pads.THE QUEEN WINDSOR CASTLE VALUE Priceless - offers from £350million The perfect weekend retreat just 22 miles from Buckingham Palace. Its 1,000 rooms dating back 900 years make it the world's largest occupied castle. The Queen first moved here with her family in the Second World War to escape German bombs. She has her own private St George's Chapel, where her parents King George VI and the Queen Mother, plus her sister Princess Margaret, are buried. Royal touch: The Queen enjoys hosting State banquets in the 170ft-long St George's Hall with a table seating up to 160 guests.BALMORAL VALUE Priceless - offers from £110million The Queen's favourite home, set in 50,000 acres of farmland, grouse moors and forests in Aberdeenshire. Her Majesty spends every summer here but when the castle is open to tourists she stays in a seven-bedroom house on the estate, Craigowan Lodge, then moves into the big house for August and September. The whole family enjoys fishing, hunting, picnicking and barbecuing - with Prince Philip in charge of the cooking. Royal touch: The Queen often drives her beloved Range Rover over the rugged estate - sometimes with terrified dignitaries as passengers.SANDRINGHAM HOUSE VALUE: Upwards of £55million Once described as the most comfortable house in England, the Queen spends much of the winter here. It holds poignant memories as her father George VI died here, as did George V. The house is small by royal standards - it can sleep 30 - and stands in a 20,000-acre estate in north Norfolk. The principal rooms are the saloon, drawing room, dining room and ballroom, plus a gun room, bi
