Any former soldier of the British Army over the age of 65, who is facing spending their advanced years alone, can apply for residence as an In-Pensioner. Some 300 army veterans live at the Royal Hospital today, including those who have served in Korea, the Falkland Islands, Cyprus, Northern Ireland and World War II. The Royal Hospital is a Grade I and II listed site, a beautiful architectural legacy left to us by Charles II and Sir Christopher Wren.

Lovely sunny day in the Royal hospital, being shown several of the sites by Brian one of the amazing Chelsea Pensioners,

Become a Chelsea Pensioner at the Royal Hospital Chelsea
Today some 300 army veterans call the Royal Hospital Chelsea home. The Hospital offers independent living in a sheltered housing environment intended for those who, upon admission, are self-caring and able to live independently with extra support where required but without the need for nursing care. We do offer nursing care but the Royal Hospital cannot accept direct entries to the nursing wards as space is limited and, priority is given to our existing residents. Chelsea Pensioners can also access onsite therapy services (Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy) as well as a comprehensive activities programme which involves both onsite and external events & activities.

It is a retirement home and nursing home for some 300 British soldiers who are unfit for further duty due to injury or old age. It is a true hospital in the original sense of the word, that is, a place where hospitality was provided. The residents in the Royal Hospital are referred to as in-pensioners (or more colloquially, as Chelsea pensioners), the Men in Scarlet, notable for their colorful jackets and triangular hats.

Chelsea Pensioners Parade, King's Road, Chelsea London
The King's Road is typically associated with high fashion and trendy boutiques. On Saturday 1st September 2018, around 10.00AM, the ranks of the Chelsea Pensioners parade down the King's Road with full military escort and two military bands. The weather was bright and sunny.
I telephoned the Royal Hospital about the parade. It turns out this was a once off event to commemorate the ending of WW I.

UK royals attend RHS Chelsea flower show
(23 May 2016) Britain's royal family on Monday paid a visit to to one of the UK's most prestigious horticultural shows, held annually in London.
Queen Elizabeth II took a tour of the grounds at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show along with her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
The Queen, who became Britain's longest-serving monarch last year, also paid a visit to one of the more poignant displays at this year's exhibition.
The monarch stopped to visit the 5000 Poppies exhibit, a huge display of nearly 300,000 hand-crocheted poppies.
The project, which began in 2013 as a small tribute of just 120 crocheted poppies by two Australian women to honour their fathers who fought in the Second World War, soon exploded in scale after it became a viral sensation.
People from all over the world began sending handmade poppies to Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight, whose display is now meant to memorialise all those who had served their country in conflict and peace-keeping operations.
It was also Prince William's first visit to the show along with his wife Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.
Kate and William were joined by Prince Harry.
The exhibition has been held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London every year since 1913, except for gaps during the two World Wars.
