Regarded as the finest opera house ‘East of Suez’ in its hay day, Lambha and her team retained as much of its rich historic fabric, rebuilding it back to the decadent Baroque wonder it once was. An ode to the performing arts, its sumptuous past can be seen all around - in the plush colours, ornate pediments, ceiling friezes and much of the opulent interiors.

Mumbai's Royal Opera House reopens after 23 years
The century-old Royal Opera House in the Mumbai city has welcomed the public for the first time in more than two decades after a six-year restoration project.
The building was inaugurated by King George V in 1911 and construction was completed in 1912.
It featured a three-level auditorium, gilded ceilings, stained glass windows, and an ornate foyer which borrowed from both European and Indian designs. The building lent its name to the neighborhood where it was built, which has come to be known as Opera House.
In the early 1930s, as movies gained popularity Mumbai, it was used as a cinema hall. In 1952, a few years after India’s independence from the British, the building was purchased by the Maharaja of Gondal, ruler of an area covering part of the modern-day state of Gujarat.
However as audiences for single-screen cinemas decreased, the Opera House’s clientele also dwindled. The building fell into disrepair and was shut in the 1980s.

India's only surviving opera house has been restored to its colonial-era glory, reopening to the public more than two decades after it closed in disrepair.

Since its renovation, Mumbai's Royal Opera House has had many events and gatherings. What it hasn't had so far is a full-length opera. This has now changed with the first opera being staged, that too with an all-Indian cast.

When we got here the first time, the walls were leaking. The roof was not stable. There were trees growing out of the facade, said conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah, who's been working on restoring it for the last six years.

The great Opera House Heist in Mumbai India(English Subtitle)
On 19 March 1987, a group posing as Central Bureau of Investigation officers executed a fake income tax investigation raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri & Sons Jewellers in Mumbai, India.
Police investigation revealed that he booked room number 415 at the Taj on 17 March and he put an advertisement in the newspaper. Police found that Singh reached the hotel after leaving the jewellery shop and hired a taxi from there. The taxi dropped him at Vile Parle where he hired an auto.He was last seen there and there was no trail. The police put out a nationwide alert. They sent a team to Kerala as his hotel record showed that he hailed from Trivandrum. A person named George Augustine Fernandes was arrested but later found that he was not involved. They also sent a team to Dubai but no headway reported. The heist amount ranged from ₹ 30 to 35 Lakhs (₹ 3 to 3.5 million)
