Introduction to the Royal Pavilion
A short history of Brighton's Royal Pavilion, narrated by Andrew Barlow, a former Keeper of the Royal Pavilion.
The video describes the history of George IV's seaside palace, and the ongoing restoration work. It offers a view of several spaces in the building which are not accessible to the public, including the tunnel beneath the Pavilion garden.

Just a couple blocks down is Brighton's Royal Pavilion, with its eccentric exterior that recalls the city's flamboyant heyday as a vacation spot for King George IV.

Brighton has the dubious honor to host the famous Royal Pavilion. It's wonderful to visit, and has become an icon for the city, but it's history is the perfect definition for the term folly. Still, it has been so popular with visitors, that locals purchased the building to save it from destruction.
It was constructed for George, Prince Regent, (later George IV) in the early 1800s, as a lavish entertainment home, away from London. It was a party/vacation home, and George was anxious to have some fun.
George mandated an Asian style, but required no authenticity. (Other monarchs have made rather critical remarks about the design.) It is designated a pavilion, not a royal palace, for these reasons, (among others).
The architects did a marvelous job of creating a Disneyland-Asia. It's half spectacular, half Chinese restaurant. The mix of motifs has no connection to real Asian architecture, but it's very fun to explore!

A former residence for the royalty of the United Kingdom, construction of the immense Brighton Royal Pavilion began in 1787 and was finally completed in 1822.
The Pavilion was designed in exotic Indo-Saracenic architectural style popular in 19th century India.
The beautifully intricate colonnades coupled with the domed spires, and creamy pale color adds to the grandeur of this extravagant structure.
Geometric screen and glass patterns allow the natural light to dance and shimmer on the Pavilion's inner walls.
Adorning the interior are lavish furnishings of ancient Chinese and Indian origin, most likely acquired by the East India Trading Company.
Since its days as a hospital, housing injured Indian soldiers, during World War One the Pavilion has been open to visitors and is one of Brighton's primary attractions.

In the 16th century Brighton, then called Brighthelmston, was a fishing village. In the 18th century the fishing industry went into decline, people moved away to look for work and those that remained were poverty stricken, too poor to pay their rates. Today it is a lively cosmopolitan metropolis, often referred to as London-by-the-Sea. Due to its close proximity to the capital city, being less than one hour’s journey time away, Londoners flock to Brighton at week-ends, which probably gave rise to the saying ‘a dirty weekend in Brighton’ helped, no doubt, by the antics of the future King of England, George IV, at the time of his visits to the town.
The town’s fortunes were reversed, in part, by some doctors claiming that diseases could be cured by bathing in sea-water. King George III was the first royal to regularly visit the seaside town of Weymouth to swim. His son, later to become King George IV, favoured Brighton where he rented a respectable farm-house, which he then purchased and extended into what is now the Royal Pavilion, Brighton. Being away from London and his parents, who he never got on well with and they him, allowed him the freedom to indulge in his extravagant lifestyle and his passions of drinking, womanising and gambling that scandalised the country and got him heavily into debt. It was also a discreet location for the Prince to enjoy liaisons with his long-time companion, Maria Fitzherbert, whom he later married in secret.
Travel in the 18th century was expansive so only rich towns people could afford to holiday at the seaside. The rich have a tendency to follow in the footsteps of the royals, so houses for the wealthy were built as Brighton attracted everyone of importance.
Queen Victoria made her first visit to the Royal Pavilion in 1837. Wanting to distance herself and her family from her Uncle’s lavish lifestyle and extravagance she adopted a frugal lifestyle. She hated the lack of privacy and space that the Royal Pavilion offered her and her growing family so finally she sold it to the town of Brighton for £50,000 in 1850. She ordered the building to be stripped of all interior decorations, fittings and furnishings for use in other royal homes. Some of these have been returned but it is nothing like it was in its heyday.
During the First World War the Pavilion was transformed into a military hospital. From December 1914 to January 1916, sick and wounded soldiers from the Indian Army were treated in the former palace.

The Royal Pavilion is a former royal residence located in Brighton, England. It was built in three campaigns, beginning in 1787, as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, from 1811 Prince Regent. It is often referred to as the Brighton Pavilion. It is built in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in India for most of the 19th century, with the most extravagant chinoiserie interiors ever executed in the British Isles.

Brighton is an English seaside resort town. About an hour south of London by train, it's a popular day-trip destination. Its broad shingle beach is backed by amusement arcades and Regency-era buildings. Brighton Pier, in the central waterfront section, opened in 1899 and now has rides and food kiosks. The town is also known for its nightlife, arts scene, shopping, and festivals.

Exploring the Royal Pavilion Bottle
Silent film by artist Stig Evans exploring the Saloon Bottle of Brighton's Royal Pavilion. This area, a series of small rooms beneath the Pavilion's main dome, is inaccessible to the public. Stig's film shows the rooms as they appear today, and concentrates on the graffiti which can be seen on the walls. Much of this dates from the 19th and early 20th centuries, before the Pavilion was restored to its present condition.
