Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Swans in Ruby Valley Nevada.
Swans and geese on Franklin Lake in Ruby Valley Nevada. Just North of Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This Video was taken below our friends ranch, sorry about the heat waves it was late in the day and I did not want to close and scare off the birds. I will try for early morning video next year to avoid the heat waves. This area of Nevada is being given away to fracking corporations by the BLM it's sad to lose these places.
The Ruby Mountains in Elko, Nevada, Ruby Lake and the Last Chance Ranch June 2004
My first journey around the Ruby Mountains in June 2004! Includes Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, the Humboldt River and the Last Chance Ranch by Spring Creek and Elko, Nevada!
I chatted with a few cowboys in Clover Valley and with a few fishermen at Ruby Lake. I asked them if that was their favorite fishing hole in Elko County and they let me know that this was the best fishing place in the state!
I also saw the Pony Express Route that ran during 1860 and 1861 thru the Humboldt National Forest. I spotted a few antelope and a wild horse!

SUMMARY
=======
The Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in southwestern Elko County and northwestern White Pine County in the northeastern section of the state of Nevada in the western United States. Established in 1938, it encompasses 37,632 acres (152.29 km2) of wetlands in Ruby Valley, just east of the Ruby Mountains and just south of Harrison Pass. It is 16 miles (26 km) long, up to 3 miles (4.8 km) in width, and lies at an elevation of 6,000 feet (1,800 m). Once the bed of a 200-foot (61 m) deep lake, it is now a network of spring-fed marshes and shallow ponds serving as a habitat for hundreds of species of native and migratory birds and mammals.
The Refuge is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A Visitor's Center (located at 40°12′08″N 115°29′34″W) and auto-tour route allow for discreet viewing of waterfowl.
Ruby Valley / Smith Ranch Hot Spring, full video
I visited this hot spring area sometime in 2001. The big water hole is about 99 degrees F, and so deep you cannot see or touch the bottom (anybody ever scuba dive in this one?). There are other water holes in the area that are warmer, like the smaller one at 104 degrees. This spring area is located to the east of the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, right on the boundary.
This was the first (and only, so far) time I visited this spring sometime around 2001. This is from my video Hot Springs Tour of Nevada, but I decided to remove the music and narration, and just leave the original sound that happened as I filmed. All these videos were shot with a Sony TRV-900 three-chip NTSC standard def camera, and sometimes I used a stereo shotgun mic. There is a lot of camera and wind noise, but this makes it a more authentic document.
Some of these springs seem to stay the same over the years, and others seem to change. Some have disappeared. This can happen with changes in the ancient underground plumbing, such as earthquakes, and sometimes they can change when they are tapped for geothermal energy. I have read that there are geothermal plants which can change the water in hot springs many miles away. One of the only geyser fields in America was in Nevada, and no longer erupts due to geothermal drilling and energy extraction.
(and a few others)
Please enjoy, this is just a rough edit of raw footage shot in 2001, compiled in October of that year.
