Cestyll Gardens
link: panoramic images taken in the Cestyll Gardens
Discover the natural beauty of Cestyll Garden, hidden away on the North Anglesey Coast. Cestyll Garden was once home to the Hon. Violet Vivian who transformed the land into a home for some beautiful and interesting plant species. To think that Violet Vivian lived off what would have been a rugged coatline between Cemaes and Cemlyn Bay in 1918, is quite amazing. The energy and vision to transform this piece of land was quite something.
Cestyll House was originally gifted to Violet Vivian in 1918 by her uncle, the Hon. William Walter Vivian of Glyn Bangor. And she began to develop this site in 1922, incorporating the Cafnan River as it flows into the sea, into the ambitious design. At a later stage a fir tree plantation was added so as to break the strong wind. Our visit certainly provided sure proof of the effectiveness of this wind break, with a stiff northerly coming in off the sea.
Here your senses will be stimulated by the interesting variety of plants that are at their best in late May. The white rhodedendrons, the Japanese Maple, yellow Witch Hazel, pink Camellias, Azeleas and Clematis. To the south west, near the Princess Victoria's garden you will see Dogwood, Spruce and Beech trees. Walk down the slope and parallel with the Cafnan River and you will see Pine trees offering good shelter above the western escarpment. Sadly, in 1991 Cestyll House was demolished, the view taken that it had deteriorated so much. However, there is still an old water mill, owned by The National Trust, on the site and the machinery is still in good condition.
By the the way the fish don,t live there they belong to my sister pond, I had filmed them the same day so I used the film.

Dover Walk: Dour river and it's sources
A pretty short vid of an organised walk I took with Dover's White Cliffs Countryside Partnership at the weekend. We were on a short walk from Kersney Abbey to a couple of the sources at Bushy Ruff and Temple Ewell. Not a long walk in total (2 miles), but I did walk out to the meeting place and back which was another two miles or so in each direction! Was a fun day with a great crowd even if it was a bit slipy in places and made filming tricky. More to come!

London walk from Russell Square to Oxford Street and Covent Garden
Join me for this walk through Bloomsbury – an area of London that Charles Dickens knew well – as we walk from the Charles Dickens Museum, through Russell Square and onto the British Museum, from where we take two separate walks, one to Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street via Great Russell Street and Bedford Square, the other from the British Museum along Shaftesbury Avenue and through Seven Dials to Covent Garden.
This walk divides into four sections:
Part one is Russell Square Underground Station to the Charles Dickens Museum, via Brunswick Square and Great Ormond Street Hospital, circling back to Russell Square Underground Station. 25 minutes circular walk
Part two is Russell Square Station to Russell Square and onto the British Museum. 12 minutes
Part three is the British Museum to Tottenham Court Road avoiding New Oxford Street. 18 minutes
Part four is the British Museum to Covent Garden via Shaftesbury Avenue and Seven Dials. 16 minutes
The Charles Dickens Museum part of the walk is taken from Nicola Perry’s book 33 Walks in London You Shouldn’t Miss.
This walk was requested by Tina Kampouroglou who is bringing a group of students from Athens to London in April and is staying in the Russell Square area.

British Gardens: Stowe & Herstmonceux
Follies at Stowe (first) and Herstmonceux Castle (from min 3:22)
'Capability' Brown (1716-1783):
He authored over 170 gardens surrounding the finest country houses and estates in Britain, such as Stowe, Croome Court , Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle, Harewood House, Bowood House, Milton Abbey (and nearby Milton Abbas village), partially Kew Gardens.
His style: naturalistic compositions of smooth undulating grass running straight to the house, clumps, belts and scattering of trees with serpentine lakes, small rivers... His 'landscaped/grammatical garden' swept away almost all the remnants of previous formally patterned styles.
His critique: Russell Page accused him of 'encouraging his wealthy clients to tear out their splendid formal gardens and replace them with his facile compositions of grass, tree clumps and rather shapeless pools and lakes'. Conversely, Sir William Chambers and others complained that Brown's grounds differ very little from common fields, so closely is nature copied in most of them.
After him: A reaction against the smooth blandness of Brown's landscapes was inevitable. During the nineteenth century he was widely criticised, but during the twentieth century his popularity returned. Dorothy Stroud wrote the first full monograph on Capability Brown, fleshing out the generic attributions with documentation from country house estate offices.

LONDON WALK | Victoria Embankment to Paul's Walk by the River Thames | England
A first-person perspective London walk tour from Victoria Embankment to Paul's Walk.
Experience all of the sights and sounds as Watched Walker (yes, I’m talking about myself in the third person) takes us on a walking tour through the streets of London, featuring Paul’s Walk and Victoria Embankment. The route begins across from Temple Station on Victoria Embankment, travelling along the north bank of the River Thames, leading onto Paul’s Walk and ending by the Millennium Bridge.
Sights seen along the tour include the National Submarine War Memorial, King George V Silver Jubilee monument, Blackfriars Bridge and Pier, Tate Modern, and Millennium Bridge.
And in each video I've hidden a blinking eye, can you spot it? (It could appear more than once). In addition to the blinking eye, I've also added the Watched Walker logo to various scenes–it could be on buildings, vehicles or any other objects, so keep an eye out for it too!

Historic village of River near Dover Kent
Historic village of River near Dover Kent. The Village of River sits in a valley through which the River Dour flows. This stretch of river powered a series of watermills over the years. These were both paper and corn mills. The only remaining working mill now is Crabble Corn Mill which dates from 1812. It has recently been restored and is open to the public. It is operated and maintained by The Crabble Corn Mill Trust.
Another leisure facility is Kearsney Abbey. This is an extensive park and gardens. The River Dour runs through the park and widens into large lakes which are abundant with swans, ducks and other water fowl. In the grounds are the remains of the mansion that gave the park it's name. It is in these remains that the abbey tea rooms are situated.

Kearsney Abbey near Dover - Vintage Footage from the 1960's
Here's Vintage Footage of Kearsney Abbey (near Dover) - UK. This is a great film of an old British Garden filmed in the 1960's.
Kearsney Abbey is a beautiful and popular location, situated on the outskirts of Dover. The gardens are laid out as informal parkland around two ornamental lakes, with the River Dour flowing through. There are plenty of opportunities to relax watching the wildlife on the lakes, or to enjoy a family picnic in the gardens.
