Rabat (الرباط) literally Fortified Place is the capital city of Morocco. The city is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the river Bou Regreg. On the facing shore of the river lies Salé, Rabat's bedroom community. Together with Temara the cities account for a combined metropolitan population of 2.6 million. It is an easy going city by Moroccan standards.
If you aren't in a hurry, walking around the area of Centre Ville, Agdal, The University, the Medina, the Ocean/River and the monuments is easy and pleasant. The new Corniche on the river, leading to the Oudaias, has recently been re-done, and there are expected openings of cafes soon. The route cotiere, or coastal road, past the cemetery and the Oudaias has dramatic ocean-side views, especially charming at sunset.
here are two lines between Rabat and Salé. It costs only 6 MAD for one use and it works from 6am to 11 pm from Monday to Sunday. There is a tram every 10 minutes during the week and every 20 minutes during Sunday. One of the stations (Mohammed V - Gare de Rabat) is located exactly just in front of the downtown train station (Gare de Rabat-Ville). It is a good way of getting around. Maps are available in every station.
Kasbah of the Oudaias, the picturesque medieval Almohadan fortress citadel, still a residential area, with commanding ocean views from the acropolis and refreshing Andalusian gardens on it's base. The entrance to the Andalusian gardens is through the smaller door, down the steps from the main gate. In this entrance you are less likely to be harassed by informal “guides”. Outside the gardens you will find a cozy outdoor café with a nice ocean view

Hassan Tower and the Royal Mausoleum, with the Royal Guards - Free Admission. Old Medina, with its various street markets (souqs). The side street leading to the Kasbah (Rue des Consuls) is full of history and traditional shops. The Tourist Police is also stationed there. The main market streets are Rue Souika and Avenue Mohammed V.
Chellah - old city founded by Carthaginians, conquered by Romans and later passed under Arab rule, just to be abandoned and settled again by unbelievable numbers of birds, namely storks. This breeding ground bubbles with bird life in spring, including stork nest on the top of old minaret. Also, historical layers are visible, with outstanding Roman and Moroccan parts. You can walk there from centre-ville, but it's a long walk. Admission is 70 MAD and it's open until 5:30 PM.
There are many things to do here, as with most Moroccan cities it is enough just to wander around and adventure where something takes your fancy. In the Kasbah (Oudaia) there is an amazing cafe that looks over the sea, where you can drink mint tea and eat sugary treats. The staff are very friendly and you can stay as long as you like soaking up the atmosphere. There is also a large and tranquil park next to the Hotel Sofitel, where people run and play football etc. You can also use the pool at the Sofitel for a charge. The park is a 10-15 Dirham taxi ride (10 minutes) from la gare central.

Pope Francis and Morocco's King Mohammed VI called for the protection of Jerusalem's multi-religious character. In a joint appeal signed in Morocco, they stressed that the city's sacred sites must be accessible to worshippers of all faiths

Pope Francis encourages minority Christians in Morocco
On the second and final day of his trip to Morocco March 30-31, Francis encouraged local priests and religious communities to “continue to be neighbors to those who are often left behind, the little ones and the poor, prisoners and migrants.”
“May your charity be ever active and thus a path of communion between Christians of every confession present in Morocco: ‘the ecumenism of charity,’” he said, adding that charity can also be “a path of dialogue and cooperation with our Muslim brothers and sisters.”
Christians are called to dialogue “following the example of Jesus himself, who is meek and humble of heart, with fervent and disinterested love, without calculations and limitations, and with respect for the freedom of others,” Francis explained.
He twice warned against “proselytism,” which he said always leads to a cul-de-sac. “Being a Christian is not about adhering to a doctrine, or a temple or an ethnic group. Being Christian is about an encounter,” he said.
“We are Christians because we have been loved and encountered, and not as the result of proselytism. Being Christian is about knowing that we have been forgiven and are asked to treat others in the same way that God treated us,” Francis said.
The pope compared the small Catholic community in Morocco to yeast that is mixed in with flour, leavening all through the Beatitudes and fraternal love.

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis departed from Rome on Sunday headed for Bulgaria.
After the Pope boarded the papal plane in Rome, there was a short delay as ground staff struggled to detach a guide truck from the aircraft.
Once the vehicle was freed, the plane continued taxiing and took off without further incident.
Pope Francis will spend two days in Bulgaria before travelling to North Macedonia.

Catholics gather for pope's mass in Rabat
(31 Mar 2019) Organisers say some 10,000 people are attending Pope Francis' public Mass in Morocco, most of them foreigners representing about 60 countries.
The liturgy held in a sports arena in Morocco's capital of Rabat on Sunday was the final event on the schedule for the pope's two-day visit.
Nora Moso is originally from the Philippines and works in Casablanca as a nanny.
She said she was grateful her employer gave her the day off for her birthday, so she could attend the Mass.
Diego Sanchez lives in Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in North Africa that is a destination of migrants who pour into Morocco hoping to find a way to Europe.
Sanchez says he thinks Catholicism is multiracial and universal.
We have people from European origins, we have people from Arab origins, we have people from African, sub-Saharan origins so we are very happy, he said.

The Church in North Africa: A testimony of fraternity
The Church in Africa brings a Christian presence to the north of the continent as well. The Archbishop of Rabat in Morocco, pastor of a community with approximately 25,000 people, underlines the Churchs significance in a country where more than 98% of the population is Muslim. To be a member of the Church is to be a witness, a witness of Someone who you chose to follow, a witness of the love that was given to all men and that welcomes every life -- whoever he or she may be -- in all cultures and all religions. Our primary role is to be able to express with our lives that there is a God who loves all men.In a country where proselytism is forbidden, this determination to be witnesses is embraced by the traditional Christian communities. However, it does create difficulties in the relationship with evangelical communities. We cannot come together because we do not entirely have the same views. For them, what is needed is baptism; whereas, what we try to do is to live out [our faith]. And so, I would say that the difficulty lies in the fact that for the common Muslim, Christians -- whether Protestant, Orthodox, Baptist, Evangelical or Catholic -- are all the same.Despite this reality, the Catholic Church enjoys a rather favorable status in Morocco: the civil authorities grant complete freedom to the Churchs charitable institutions. This allows both Archbishop Landel, who is also the president of the Regional Episcopal Conference of North Africa, and the local Caritas to help immigrants in the diocese. Nevertheless, he is strongly committed -- in both Europe and Africa -- to finding a solution to these immigration problems. Our logic is: How can we motivate all those who leave their homes to stay? And therefore, what can we do to create awareness about all that is going on and to help these people develop and grow and to keep from despairing.
