Russia: Ancient Jewish library welcomed to new home in Moscow
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Moscow's Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre as an important collection of ancient Jewish books, the Schneerson library, arrived on Thursday. The President familiarised himself with the most valuable parts of the collection, which contains some 12,000 books and 50,000 rare documents dating from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century.
The transfer follows years of debate with the New York City based Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic community who demand the return of the library. The movement argues they are the right owners of the books, as the author of the collection, Schneerson, headed the organisation after moving to the United States. However the transfer of the Schneerson library was welcomed by the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Berl Lazar, who called it a big day for Russian Jews.
Russia has maintained that it will keep the collection, saying that it is a state property and part of Russian culture. The matter got into the media spotlight in January after a US judge ordered Russia to pay $50,000 (€37,000) per day until it returns the library. The decision to move the collection to Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre was proposed by Putin himself this year during a meeting of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations.
Moscow's Jewish Museum and Centre of Tolerance was opened in November 2012, with Israeli President Shimon Peres travelling to Moscow for its inauguration. It features several interactive displays regarding the Jewish peoples' long and tumultuous place in Russian history. Now home to the the Schneerson library collection, the museum's new library department operates as a part of the Russian State Library.
Treasures from Moscow: Icons from the Andrey Rublev Museum
A unique collection of icons from the Andrey Rublev's Museum of Early Russian Culture and Art risks being seized in the United States. Recently this collection was taken by the museum administration to a private U.S. museum founded by Gordon Lankton (on video). The Russian icons will remain in the U.S. until July 2011, the Rublev's Museum said on its website:
Such a conclusion was made from a speech by Russian Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev on the Ekho Moskvy radio station, who said that as a result of U.S. claims to the Schneerson Library all Russian property not covered by diplomatic immunity could be seized in the U.S:
During the exhibition «Treasures from Moscow: Icons from the Andrey Rublev Museum» in Clinton in the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton (Mass) an iconographer David Clayton, artist in residence at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in Merrimack (N.H.) has hosted Episode six 'Icons - the Art of the Heavenly Ideal' of 'The Way of Beauty'.

Art Deco Museum, Things To Do, Moscow
In December, 2014, the first private Art Deco Museum in Russia opened in the former mansion of Imperial Mint on the Luzhnetskaya Embankment. The founder of the museum, Mkrtich Okroyan, is widely known in the world of art thanks to his participation in the Sotheby's exhibition in Paris for the 100th anniversary of Diaghilev's seasons and the exhibition at the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in Salamanca. Not to make profit but reflect his personal passion for Art Deco and especially to its architecture, Mr. Okroyan has been carefully gathering the masterpieces during over 20 years from various countries. At a rough estimate, the museum's collection of 900 sculptures made of ivory, marble and bronze, more than 500 items of furniture, and decorative arts is valued at $100 million. You will not meet at any Russian state museum the outstanding works, such as sculptures by Demetre Chiparus (famous figurines depicting dancers of Russian Ballet Seasons), Claire Colinet, Ferdinand Preiss or Bruno Zach, lacquered panels by Jean Dunand, consoles and lamps by Edgar Brandt, furniture by Paul Follot, Andre Arbus, Jules Lelue, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann and others.
Art Deco Museum has become a perfect platform for educational programs for children and parents, and temporary expositions. Mkrtich Okroyan, the author of the book Art Deco Sculpture: From Root to Flourishing, has managed to gather a team of professionals, who have been leading wide range of educational and scientific-research activities over 10 years based on the museum's collection: expositions, lectures, seminars, master classes. Art Deco Museum plans to arrange a multimedia library, hold roundtables and conferences, involve actively students of Russian and European institutes of arts for studying and popularizing Art Deco style.

RUSSIA: FINANCIAL CRISIS MEANS MORE CLOSURES OF CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS
Russian/Eng/German/Nat
Russia's most coveted cultural attractions have shut their doors in yet another casualty of the country's massive financial crisis.
From Moscow's famous Lenin Library to the world-renowned Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, museum workers and artists are staging a nation-wide strike to demand wages and respectable funding for Russia's historical landmarks.
Tourists from all over the world are being robbed of the opportunity to witness St. Petersburg's Kirov ballet or browse the halls of the Hermitage.
Meanwhile some of Russia's most precious manuscripts are moulding at Moscow's Lenin library where there isn't enough money to provide proper care.
Moscow's Lenin library is second only to the United States' library of Congress.
With over 41-million books, many of them rare manuscripts, this library is one of Russia's national treasures.
But Russia is so squeezed for cash that even her national treasures are being neglected.
Hours at the Lenin library have been reduced because the government can't afford to pay the bills.
Today anxious students and academics waited over four hours for access to the city's library.
Inside, the enormous reading halls are empty, closed to the thousands of readers who usually sit in attentive silence enjoying the best of Russian literature.
And it's not only the hours that have been scaled back.
Maintenance and safe-keeping of rare and antique books is now virtually non-existent.
For years there hasn't been enough money for even the smallest capital repairs.
In fact the last real repairs were made in the 1950s.
Russia's oldest and most precious manuscripts are crumbling.
Mould is growing on the walls and paint is chipping from the ceiling.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
You know we are losing so many workers. People just can't exist on the wages here. The most awful thing is that we are in danger of losing our national treasures. Everything that you have seen here is a result of the lack of financing this year.
SUPERCAPTION: Natalya Danilova, Lenin library librarian
In St. Petersburg the crisis has gone even further -- the world famous Hermitage museum has been closed.
Cultural workers across the city have gone on strike, protesting unpaid wages and drastic under-funding.
Even Russia's most prized house of culture, the Russian National Museum, stands empty of visitors.
Ironically, it is in the worst shape of all.
Home to Russia's most valuable works of art, the National Museum is literally crumbling from lack of repairs.
Much of the paintings have been removed from the walls and put in storage.
Some of the ceilings have fallen in and many statues are cracked and tarnished.
Russia's own citizens are unable to view their country's own artistic pride and joy.
And the Hermitage museum stands empty.
The doors have been shut for nearly a week now, as workers protest poor maintenance and unpaid wages.
Tourists from across the globe arrive in St. Petersburg with the one hope of visiting the museum.
Now they will only be able to gaze at its imposing structure from the street.
For many it's a huge disappointment.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
Its very important for me to study in St. Petersburg because of all the museums here. This is the main reason why most come to St. Petersburg. And if visitors lose this opportunity it will no doubt play a negative role on Russia's economy. I think this is an awful way to treat the treasures of St. Petersburg.

Some of St. Petersburg visitors think there must be some way for Russia to get herself out of this cultural crisis.

The exhibition includes masterpieces ranging from the 12th to the 17th century, with works by Giovanni Bellini, Melozzo da Forli, Pietro Perugino, Rafael Santi, Caravaggio, Guido Reni, Guercino and Nicolas Poussin, among others.

The second part of the exhibition will take place in the Vatican in 2017, with a large part of the exhibition dedicated to great Russian Gospel-themed paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery.
