Rye Harbour Nature Reserve offers a unique experience to the 330,000 people who visit it every year. It is one of the largest and most important wildlife sites in England, set in an exceptional coastal and wetland landscape and home to 4,275 varieties of plants and animals including more than 200 rare or endangered species.
We are currently working on plans to enhance the visitor experience for people who come and enjoy the nature reserve throughout the year. Our current Information Centre based at Lime Kiln Cottage is cold and damp, is vulnerable to flooding and provides no refreshment or toilet facilities for the public. Lime Kiln Cottage is therefore no longer fit for purpose and requires significant redevelopment to provide adequate facilities for visitors to the site.

This film was shot in May, a good time for Avocets with many young Avocets about. There were quite a variety considering the time of year. The Sandwich terns were nesting in vast numbers along with the common terns.

A Walk Through Rye, East Sussex, England
Rye is a small town in the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex, within the historic County of Sussex, England, which stands approximately two miles from the open sea and is at the confluence of three rivers: the Rother, the Tillingham and the Brede. In medieval times, however, as an important member of the Cinque Ports confederation, it was at the head of an embayment of the English Channel and almost entirely surrounded by the sea.
Rye is officially a civil parish but with its historic roots has the status of a town; at the 2011 census it had a population of 4773. During its history its association with the sea has included providing ships for the service of the King in time of war, and being involved with smuggling gangs of the 18th and 19th centuries such as the notorious Hawkhurst Gang who used its inns such as The Mermaid Inn and The Olde Bell Inn, connected by secret passageway.
Those historic roots and its charm make it a tourist destination, and much of its economy is based on that: there are a number of hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, tea rooms and restaurants, as well as other attractions, catering for the visitor. There is a small fishing fleet, and Rye Harbour has facilities for yachts and other vessels.

Rye Harbour and Camber Sands
The landscape and atmosphere of Rye Harbour and the River Rother as it exits into the sea at Camber Sands. A magical place to spend an hour or two at any time of the year, watching the horses ride along the beach, the birds on the reserve or the sailing boats out at sea.
A Trip to Rye Harbour, Nature Reserve & Town
On a beautiful sunny and balmy Autumn day, we drove to Rye Harbour, walked along the Nature Reserve path to the pebble beach and back, then went to Rye town for lunch and a stroll around the town. Altogether a lovely day.

A short film from the RYE Nature Reserve. I have worked with The Wildlife Trust a few times with drones, so with strict supervision we were able to capture some aerial filming of the reserve without creating disturbance to the wild life.

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Filmed From The Air - DJI Phantom
A 30mph Westerly wind made filming extremely challenging, but it was a beautiful sunny late afternoon flight with the DJI Phantom. Filming in 720P High Definition, it spent most of its time at about 30 degrees fighting the wind to hold position. Didn't dare go near the water for obvious reasons or too high because Seagulls tend to get a bit close!
