Ryoanji Temple (龍安寺, Ryōanji) is the site of Japan's most famous rock garden, which attracts hundreds of visitors every day. Originally an aristocrat's villa during the Heian Period, the site was converted into a Zen temple in 1450 and belongs to the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, whose head temple stands just a kilometer to the south.
As for the history of Ryoanji's famous rock garden, the facts are less certain. The garden's date of construction is unknown and there are a number of speculations regarding its designer. The garden consists of a rectangular plot of pebbles surrounded by low earthen walls, with 15 rocks laid out in small groups on patches of moss. An interesting feature of the garden's design is that from any vantage point at least one of the rocks is always hidden from the viewer.

The Japanese rock garden or dry landscape garden, often called a zen garden, creates a miniature stylized landscape through
carefully composed arrangements of rocks, water features, moss,
pruned trees and bushes, and uses gravel or sand that is raked to represent ripples of water.
A zen garden is usually relatively small, surrounded by a wall,
and is usually meant to be seen while seated from a single viewpoint of outside the garden, such as the porch of the called hojo of the residence of the chief monk.
Rock garden of Ryoanji, the trees and grass are shaped by only 15 pieces of stone and white sand without using any.

The rock garden there are 15 pieces of stone, but ...
Always one be viewed from anywhere is designed so as not hidden to the other stone.
Rock garden of Ryoanji is trapped in the frame without the use of the natural landscape, all that mud wall.
In addition, such as devising feel the depth is applied by the illusion of the human eye by designing lower toward the earthen wall in the back, in the rock garden of Ryoanji Temple are hidden advanced landscaping techniques.

Cherry trees have recently been planted northwest of the pond.

Ryoanji Temple, Kyoto, Japan
Autumn leaves falling in the rock garden at Ryoanji
Ryoanji Temple in Cherry Blossom Season, Kyoto
The group walked down the street from Rokuon-ji Temple to Ryoanji Temple to see its famous Zen rock garden. There are 15 rocks placed on a bed of white gravel and it is said that only one who has reached enlightenment is able to see all 15 rocks at one time. (That is certainly not me!)
The walls were made of clay boiled in oil and oil has seeped out over time, creating unique wall designs. Ryoanji Temple was originally a country house belonging to the Tokudaji clan; destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1499, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stupendously gorgeous when the cherry blossoms bloom.
Dry Landscape Rock (karesansui) Style Zen Garden at Ryoanji Temple, Kyoto city
karesansui is a type of garden style that is used in Zen Gardens in Japan. This style uses a dry landscape with rocks and gravel with absolutely no vegetation at all. The garden is usually made with gravel, sand and rocks. The visitors are not allowed inside the garden but there is a pavilion next to the garden from where visitors can watch the garden.
The garden at Ryoanji temple is a world famous example of this type of zen gardens. The simple yet remarkable garden measures only twenty five meters from east to west and ten meters from south to north. The rectangular zen garden contains only fifteen rocks and white gravel. It is up to each visitor to find out for himself what this unique garden signifies. The longer you gaze at it, the more varied your imagination becomes.
This garden at Ryoanji temple is said to be created at the end of Muromachi Period (around 1500) by a highly respected Zen monk Tokuho Zenketsu.
Enjoy.

BEST OF KYOTO JAPAN- Fushi Inari Shrine, Golden Temple, Ryoanji temple and Kiyomizu Temple
First day in Kyoto video:
Hey guys!
This was my second day in Kyoto - Japan. First, we went to Sushi Inari Shrine, which according to TripAdvisor, is the best tourist landmark in Japan. I can tell you that indeed is really beautiful, but I would recommend you to get there as early as you can since it will get pretty busy afterward.
After this, we visited the Golden temple and holy cows this was probably one of the most crowded places that I visited in Japan. It was crazy! And I guess that’s why I didn’t like it that much. I mean, it was really beautiful but SO full of people.
The Tyoanji temple was our next destination, and I think this one represented perfectly the idea of a Japanese temple, super quiet, almost no tourists, incredible gardens, and kind people. I loved it, and to me, this is one of the hidden gems of Kyoto.
We finished the day visiting the Kiyomizu temple, All the surroundings were just LOVELY! Full of small stores, beautiful streets, and smiles. Unfortunately, at the moment of my visit, the main building was under maintenance but it was completely worth it just walking around this nice streets, seeing people wearing Kimonos everywhere and just taking a look at the shops around it.
This was pretty much it, I really hope you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed making it :) Be sure to give it a like, subscribe if you have not yet and comment what you liked the most.
